Zion Nybeck is a kid to keep track of right now. He has destroyed the SuperElit (U20) but not gotten a chance to play more than the odd shift here and there in the SHL. But HV71 just kicked out a top wing in Antony Camara (seems to be a bit of a character, he got kicked of his team in Norway for fighting in the lockerroom) and a couple of injuries means that Zion will play a lot the rest of the way.

He played in the U18 WJC as an underaged player last season and I wasn’t sold on him, thought that he didn’t have the engine. But at this age (D-2) a year can do a lot and he is moving really well in the SHL.

He is small at 5’8-9 but as long as you skate well that isn’t a problem.

I am not sure just how good he is offensively, just that he puts up great stats in the junior league and obviously is skilled, but I think it looks like the platform is there right now. A strong finish to the SHL and a strong U18 WJC and he could shoot up the ranks.

Big fan of Zion, was at U18 WJC last season and was very impressed with him even though he was in an unfamiliar depth role that tourney. Don’t see any issues with his engine at all, the only real negative has been that he takes shifts off at the SuperElit level at times, something that is quite normal for teenagers when they are much better then the league they’re in.

Camara out is a big chance for Zion. He’s been in my top 15 since day 1, big fan of his skillset overall and he’s excellent at running a PP.

I will say that I haven't heard his name come up as a top target to this point.

Names outside the tippy top guys that have definitely come up, multiple times, include:

Zary
Holloway
Lundell
Sanderson
Mysak
Smilanic
Cuylle
Smilanic would piss me off so bad. Cuylle I know nothing about. Of the remainingg I would say Lundell, Holloway, Mysak, Zary, Sanderson in that order. I think we won't be in a position to grab Lundell or Holloway so Mysak or Zary would make me a very happy camper.

Compete level for me. Being able to raise it against higher level competition.

I also do not like the rumors of coach-ability and how open he is to receiving instruction.

That's not how to feel about him in Luleå though. The people in the organization, and my personal experience seeing him after the game, really don't rhyme with him not having the right compete level or difficult to coach.

There is nothing wrong with his compete level in the SHL. Did he take shifts off while destroying SuperElit at 16/17? Yes... that happens sometimes when things go easy for teenagers.

Give me an actual credible source on him not being coachande or able to take instructions please. Because i’ve asked around quite a bit and heard nothing but positives.

I feel like we need to get 'our guy'. Get into the top10. A player style like Stutzle, Raymond, Rossi or Holtz would be a nice adds. Raymond has NYR written all over it IMO

We have liked players before but never had the ammo to make the move. Now we do.

Out of those 4, Raymond seems to be the least likely Rangers target to me

Gunler seems like a no brainer to me if you’re somewhere around 14-20

Shoot for the highest upside

Although I think the Rangers probably gun for more safe if that’s the range they’re in

I have read a few times that this draft is deep in the sense that all of the first 5-10 picks could be capable of playing in the NHL next year.

How true is this.

Also, I would like to see if the Rangers are able to trade into the top 10 with the extra 1st round pick and some of the assets they have accumulated. Hopefully the TOR/CAR pick is 20-25 range and ours is 15-20 range. You package those two picks plus a prospect, could that get us into the 6-10 range? Is it worth it to do so or stand pat since the draft is pretty deep this year? Take the quantity at the later 1st round picks which could still be great qualityv

Yeah, no team is trading down if they are in the top 10 this year. When was the last time a team with a top-10 pick traded down? I had to look it up. 2008!
We got assets

Maybe OTT trades their lower of the picks for an accumulation of assets.

Would you as a GM give up a potential Pettersson for those guys?
At the time, if the value is fair. Obviously not Petterson now. We're not talking about him as a NHL pro we're talking about him as a prospect.

Would you give it up for Lias or Poolparty? or Jost?

They allegedly liked Petterson and Keller . It doesn't mean they were going to tear up the NHL. If we gave decent value, a trade is made.

Trading down in the top-10 is as rare as an accepted offer sheet. The last time that happened was 2007.

Some things only happen on message boards these days

Good post... these are all my questions as well

Okay but what if a package of both 1sts and a prospect like Robertson is proposed? Or maybe its Buch/Strome and the higher of the 1sts?

As @duhmetreE pointed out, a team like OTT might be willing to trade the lower of their top 10 picks to add more assets, an extra 1st round pick and maybe another prospect. In a draft that is considered this deep, picks on the back end of the 1st round would be top 10 in other years. For a team like OTT that could significantly help their rebuild.

I agree it is unlikely, but this is indeed a message board and its not outrageous to bring this to the table of discussion.

How did we get the #7 pick in 2017? Oh, a trade?

Dont set parameters that only fit your narrative.
