I'm fine with Holtz over Sanderson as that is what i'd hope they do. Passing on Rossi would be hard though no matter who's available at the Devils pick including if Raymond makes it there

because its the 7th pick

I think we need another capable goalie to pair with Blackwood, but I would much rather sign a free agent than take Askarov 7th overall

The FA options look pretty underwhelming to me. I'm certainly not the first to say it, but it's starting to seem like you need two #1 goalies to compete. Maybe Fitz can move around (down from 7 or up from 18) to a more appropriate place to take him.

I am pretty much of the opinion that if they take Askarov in the first round, I will be quite unhappy

You don't need two #1 goalies to be competitive. You need a good goalie to rely on and then a competent backup. We have not had a competent backup in a few years now and in fact, we have had arguably the worst backup goalie situation in the league recently

I’d rather just ride with Cory another year since we’ll have to expose a goalie to expansion anyway. Expose Cory to Seattle and then buy him out next year if need be.

If Askarov is still there at 18 or 20 then I might think about it, there's no question he's a super talented goalie prospect.

I fully expect Mack to be the long term answer but there's nothing wrong with cultivating asset depth. If Askarov becomes as good as scouts seem to think he will become then he's a premium trade chip, or overtakes Mack and make him the expendable piece.

Either way, a premium goaltender is a premium goaltender and there aren't a ton of those these days. It's just a matter of opportunity cost. If we've already got two slam dunk picks locked down and Askarov is there at 20, then yeah, lets get frisky. Goalies are so volatile, we might need one in three years.

Three years ago I don't think anyone could have possibly imagined Schneider would get waived and Kinkaid would get traded for a 14 year old, and that the kid who couldn't stick with Adirondack would be a franchise goalie. In fact, I remember people being furious at the time in 2015 that we "wasted" a high pick on a goalie when Schneider was going to be here forever.

I would not be happy with Askarov at 7 but if he actually did pan out, is there a player in the draft that would contribute more to their team? Elite goaltending is invaluable.

Blackwood played 47 games last year. Even if he didn't get hurt, he wasn't going to play 60. I think the days of getting 70+ games out of your starter and for the rest of them hanging on for dear life in front of Corey Schwab are over.

I’d rather just ride with Cory another year since we’ll have to expose a goalie to expansion anyway. Expose Cory to Seattle and then buy him out next year if need be.

This honestly has nothing to do with Schneider. He would be long gone by the time Askarov got here. Even if somehow we drafted Askarov and he played here next season, he would not be eligible for the expansion draft, we'd only have to protect Blackwood.

I could be remembering wrong, but I think Gibson was worth about 4 wins a couple years ago. Conor McDavid territory.

Well, remember this is a Mock, and not rankings, so there's always a chance that someone like Yzerman goes goes off the board.

Mocks can be vastly different than your own rankings.
I mean yeah but I'd be floored if Detroit takes Askarov at 4. They're not a goalie away, why use that premium pick on something that isn't getting you anywhere closer to be relevant?

Yes, because other players get to the NHL quicker and contribute more quicker.

Will be a long season if we ride Cory again. Would be great if he became even mediocre again, however we’ve been hoping that for multiple seasons now.

I don’t think we should do Askarov even at #18. While Askarov has game changing upside, so do guys like Jarvis or Perrault. I’d take Askarov over Holloway/Zary/ if that’s what we are left with however.

While I wouldn't be entirely sure of taking Askarov at 18, I am concerned about our long term backup situation. We can hope that Giles Senn turns into something or we hope that we can snag Khudobin, Talbot, or Greiss as a free agent. Though by the time we are able to compete those three will be probably too old and crappy to be backup. Who knows though, maybe by then a good FA Goalie will be available.

@StevenToddIves I was talking to my Dad who is a die hard Canadiens fan,:thumbd: when I asked what he thinks the Habs need to get is a pure goal scorer as he see's his team not having any finishers. I was wondering if the Habs were going in that direction what draftee they would pick? or do you think that Schneider is available like in your mock draft that he is a steal/bpa that they wouldn't take anyone else?

Would love to get Jarvis and Schneider with the late picks, but if Sanderson and Rossi are both on the board and we take Holtz I will be a little upset.

The only player I could see the Devils taking over Sanderson in the consensus top 10 is Drysdale. But again, Sanderson is also the least likely of the consensus top 10 to still be available at #7.

I think we need to give Corey Schwab due credit as perhaps the best fighting goaltender of all time. That dude was scary.

Jacob Perreault and Noel Gunler would certainly interest the Canadiens at #16 overall. Rodion Amirov would also be a terrific fit. You'd have to think that Dawson Mercer would also interest Montreal, though he is less of a natural goal-scorer than those other 3 players -- Mercer would fit the description of the classic "dual-threat" forward.

Detroit takes Sanderson, you heard it here first.
The Red Wings scored 142 goals last year and with 2 extra 2nds in 2019 they drafted three defensemen in the first two rounds. Yzerman did his duty in the last draft, bad teams should aggressively draft defensemen (particularly in the 2nd round *cough* Ray *cough*), but he may want somebody with more pop now and try to get an elite offensive talent with the 4th pick here.
