He's played for a truly terrible WHL franchise. I don't think it is fair to judge him primarily on that.
I totally understand not judging players who are on bad teams like last year, but...
He's -9 in 8 games this year.

Team is 18-11-1, and has a goal differential of -8.
At some point you run out of excuses.

Not saying he should make team Canada, I haven't watched enough of camp to make a determination, but he's coming off a torn Achilles.

Lafreniere- Hayton- Thomas
Byfield- Veleno- Cozens
Foote- McMichael- Dudas
Foudy- Groulx- Dellandrea
Newhook

Smith- Bernard-Docker
Bahl- Schneider
Byram- Drysdale
McIsaac

Daws
Rodrigue
Hofer

Picks I’ll defend (as I think the rest are explanatory):

Foudy/Dudas/Groulx/Dellandrea, all these guys can chip in offensively but I think their bread and butter will come mainly on the PK and providing some solid defensive play, as well as chip in some points. I’m not interested in running the top guys on the PK for a full tournament, they need to be used to produce offence and then if need be play the PK for some reason if needed.

Bahl/Schneider: I see a mobile, hard to play against defence pairing with these guys. There is ability to play both ends of the ice but their calling will be in the defensive end. I like this group as a shutdown pairing.

Drysdale: I have him here because this defence lacks some explosiveness on the back end. I could envision him playing on a PP unit and this team lacks guys on the back end that are true puck movers. I like having LHS/RHS pairings and I think he’s the best of the remaining right handed options. If Dobson comes back, Drysdale is out and the pairings look like this: Smith/Dobson, Byram/Bernard-Docker, Bahl/Schneider and McIsaac as an extra.

I think there is a good enough mix of scoring and defensive ability mixed throughout the lineup that this team can compete for gold. Like any team, it hinges ultimately on goaltending but I have confidence that one of these guys is going to step up between the pipes.

Is it confirmed that they are making cuts tonight as someone said earlier?

TSN's been mentioning repeatedly for the last two days that the cuts would be made tonight. With this Hayton news maybe it will delay things. Or, given that McKenzie was wrong about Hayton, maybe that information is just inaccurate.

I was making the case that he shouldn't be on TC based on what I'm seeing statistically.

And I think you've added to that point. I think TC has enough depth, and Krebs doesn't have enough upside to take that risk.

The forward lines are a total mess which i think they are trying to test the players ability to gel as a team. Combinations do not makes sense. Players on the same line just do not complement each others.

If they go Lafreniere Veleno and someone like Thomas/Newhook. And have Hayton anchoring the other top 6 line with someone like Newhook/Thomas and Cozens on each side of him, Canada could legitimately have the 2 best lines in the tournament. Especially with the States missing out on Farabee now.

Getting Hayton is so huge for Canada, a top 5 pick at center in his final year eligible. Hes gonna have a big tounrey

The only place I might disagree are
1) Dudas and
2) The omission of Harley

I really liked what I saw in the USport game I watched.

I think you rely on Veleno as a PK specialist alongside Groulx, Foudy and Dellandrea. Pick up somebody with high scoring upside in your PP2.

Hockey Canada loves plugs like Dudas, won't be at all surprised if he makes it and puts up a 0-1-0 line despite getting ~15 minutes a night.

"Let's cut our 1st rounders and struggle to score when it matters!"

"Maxime Comtois in the shootout!"

If I wasn’t such a fan of LHS/RHS D pairings, I’d have Harley in there... I just don’t like entering a tournament with only 2 RHS D on the roster.

I like Dudas, I can see him having a role and playing it really well and chipping in some points but I can also see passing on him for other guys. I’m not married to him being on the roster.

There's not really a wrong choice on LHD.

I would cut the following players and keep Holloway and Newhook:
Connor Zary - shows less offensive flair and speed than Newhook and Holloway
Payton Krebs - shows less offensive flair and speed than Newhook and Holloway
Benoit Groulx - Barely noticeable
Liam Foudy - ineffective puck carrier - there are more effective forwards like Holloway (PK specialist with great speed) and Newhook (offensive specialist with good scoring instinct) who can play on PK and PP

Here is the possible Forward Lines :

Lafreniere Veleno Cozens
Foote Hayton Mercer/Lavoie (Lavoie or Mercer: one of the 2 will be cut)
Byfield McMichael Thomas
Holloway Dellandrea Newhook
Dudas ( must be picked due to his personality- coaches ' choice)

Cole Perfeti was barely used during the 2 games. He did not get a lot of chances to show his ability, likely will be cut. I just hope that they can keep him somehow to shootouts.

I had hoped that Schneider would make it. I thought that he was a good fit as a defensively dependable RHD.

Newhook has never been a HC fave but he had a strong two days at this camp, too bad. I am surprised they cut Holloway though, he’s perfectly in their mold of a role player.
