Lafreniere - Veleno - Thomas
Krebs - Byfield - Cozens
Pelletier - McMichael - Lavoie
Foudy - Newhook - Dellandrea
Perfetti

Smith - Dobson
Byram - Bernard-Docker
Harley - Addison
McIssac

Rodrigue
Jones

If Hayton makes it it pushes my centers down and out to wing and costs Pelletier his spot. If Dach somehow makes it it pushed the RW all down, Dellandrea over and Foudy out. If Dobson isn't released I have Drysdale on the team

Man, not even inviting Rees is really aggravating me. He is perfect for this team. Fast as hell for the big ice, finishes his checks, very good two-way player, character guy, and he’s scoring almost 2 PPG as by far the best player on his team! It is f***ing NUTS that there are players worse in every imaginable way invited over him. Hockey Canada just cannot avoid shooting themselves in the foot every damn year.

Anyhow, to the boys who are there, let’s go get it!

I must say, that announcement show was ridiculous. Four speakers before the players were even named, Renney trying to "comment" on current hockey issues by saying nothing, Hockey Canada guys talking about how proud they were just to announce the camp roster players.

Here's the roster:

Just a minor curiosity but why does Harley list his birthplace as NY but Nolan Foote lists his as BC instead of CO?

I also wondered about that. I was surprised that they admitted that Harley is from New York, but then it seemed weird instead that they said that Foote was from BC.

No Poulin or Rees are particularly annoying.

I agree, those are the two biggest omissions for me. I was pleased to see Merkley omitted, with Canada therefore avoiding another case of a coach overplaying a defenceman from his club team.

The chief scout said that Hockey Canada has taken note of other countries taking 17 year olds and having success with those players. It may be lip service because Gino Reda prompted him but who knows.

Canada will apparently be taking three goalies rather than two. Good decision.

McKenzie said that Veleno is very likely, though he may just join the team after the camp is finished. He said that Dach and Hayton were very unlikely, with Hayton looking less likely than Dach. He didn't have much of an idea on Dobson's availability because Lamoriello plays things so close to the vest.

The idea that Hayton might not be there is mind-numbing. He’s barely playing 10 minutes a night. Arizona should just f*** off.

Good to hear about the three goalies, though. Rodrigue’s the steady guy, but Jones and Hofer can really catch fire and be absolutely dominant for stretches. Taking three is ideal because we can have Rodrigue as insurance while hoping for one of the other two to really take control.

I can't speak to Hofer, but I can say with confidence that Jones is a very steady goalie in his own right. Peterborough's great season thus far is largely due to him playing so good. I'd love to see how good he can be with this junior all star caliber defense in front of him.

Doesn't Canada always take 3 goalies to Europe? It's been so long I can't remember for sure but I've been expecting them to take 3.

Arizona is notorious for this. They didn’t even allow Christian Fischer to play for the USA when he was in the AHL. The thing that infuriates me is that Hayton has only been playing lately due to an injury to Crouse. Now that Crouse has returned, he’ll likely go back to being a healthy scratch like last night.

They took 3 in 2013 and 2016, 2 in 2014. They should take 3 every year, but it's obviously a bigger issue when the tournament is played in Europe.

On Forward:
Dellandrea, Foote, Groulx, McMichael, Thomas, Laf Guaranteed slam dunks IMO
Byfield Cozens and Foudy = extremely likely

Leaves 4 spots

On Defence:
Byram, McIsaac (depending on health), Smith - Guaranteed slam dunks
JBD and Harley - Extremely likely

Leaves 2 spots (only one righty (JBD) is currently among that group)

In Goal:
Rodrigue - slam dunk to get one of the three spots

Just my opinion

Rodrigue/Hofer

This is based on players that they invited to camp plus Dobson and Veleno

Wondering why you would include Foote as a lock and Cozens as a likely?

Foote = last name, 19, history of team canada (U17, Hlinka)
Cozens is 18 - but like I said its extremely likely he makes it

Just basing it off prior TC decisions

No Veleno or Dobson:

Lafreniere- McMichael- Cozens
Krebs- Byfield- Thomas
Foudy- Newhook- Lavoie
Foote- Groulx- Dellandrea
Pelletier

Smith- Bernard-Docker
Byram- Schneider
McIsaac- Drysdale
Harley

Rodrigue
Hofer
Jones

If they get Veleno and Dobson back:

Lafreniere- Veleno- Cozens
Krebs- McMichael- Lavoie
Foudy- Byfield- Thomas
Foote- Groulx- Dellandrea
Newhook

Smith- Dobson
Byram- Bernard-Docker
McIsaac- Addison
Drysdale

Gotcha,
so you hadn't watched a bunch of both this year and based it on that? Was merely curious as Foote to me seems more like a top 6 or bust guy where as Cozens I could see being utilized on any line given his package.

Bob McKenzie's projection of the locks and frontrunners to make the team:

Lafreniere Veleno Cozens
Foote Dellandrea Dudas
Foudy McMichael Thomas
Byfield

Smith Bernard-Docker
McIsaac
Byram

Rodrigue

Pretty much as expected, though I don't really like seeing Foote and Dudas.

Im thinking this is just a quick list and not a real stab at lines but who knows. That absolutely looks like what the first line will be. Dellandrea as the fourth line center in that role is really solid, hes played well for Canada internationally before. Agree about Foote and Dudas. I wouldnt be surprised if they made it but kinda surprised theyre considered front runners/locks.

I could see that being the shape of the d pairs as well. Smith and JBD are kind of an all around pair with some offense, then have McIsaac with Dobson to play the defensive match ups. Theyll still put up points but more relied on to shut it down back there and McIsaac to bring some physical play. Byram starts on the bottom pair, slow start this season combined with being young, Canada isnt goingt o put him in a big role right away. Maybe have Harley with him and they come back next year as the top pair? Not sure who would be the 7th but with them taking a guy like Phillips last year on D I'm not going to pretend I know whats going to happen either

Agreed, aside from age I don't see anything either of them bring over a bunch of the non-invitees. I really don't understand the Nolan Foote love, I've never liked him as a player, I wish him the best but the 6 or 7 times I've watched him he looks like the non-November version of 2018-2019 Patrik Laine.

Surprised by Dudas
Disappointed in Noel for not cracking this line up
All the Q picks are justified
Would have liked to see Poulin be selected
Bullshit on no Hayton
Goaltending is scary from what I see

He does it every year and it's generally pretty accurate. It isn't a line prediction generally but a look at who the favourites are and where they likely slot in terms of wings and centres. For the sake of clarity, he had Byfield listed as a LW and not as the fourth centre.
