I am a positive guy and have a never say die attitude when it comes to my hockey teams but the lineup is just not strong enough relative to the other teams to overcome the goaltending this team will have. It will break our hearts in the play down game.

Shame Hockey Canada refuses to address that ongoing issue.

We can close the door on Dach at this point, he’s not coming back. Hayton has played more games of late but I still wouldn’t be surprised if he got released... he’s not playing such a key role that he will he missed for the time he’d have to be away. Dobson is the same deal for the Islanders.

I’d love to be proven wrong, but I agree with you. Knight and Askarov should be dominant for the Americans and Russians, and Alnefelt, Dostal and Annunen are having excellent seasons in their respective men’s leagues. It’s quite astounding with our number of registered players that we’ve struggled to produce top flight goalie prospects as of late. It is usually our Achilles heel at this tournament, although Hart and Dipietro were both very solid for the most part the last two years.

There are going to be some really good players left off of the camp roster...let alone the final team.

More players than we typically see at the camp the last few years (been around 33-34, this list is 36), but with so few returning players, some injury/rust concerns, and some up in the air pro commitments, I think it makes sense for them to go a tad larger.

Newhook might be starting to play his way onto the team. 11 points in his last 7 games. Second among all NCAA freshman in goals. He's already known for his defensive play. Plays all situations including PK. He may get a look as a depth role player.

Even if Dach and Hayton get loaned it is still not like it is a team that will be able to score it's way out of average to possibly below average goaltending against the good teams that have really good goaltenders.

I think this will be a team that tops out at bronze to be honest, I am not all that excited about it yet I will be there as always to cheer them on though my expectations for once have finally had to be tempered. Other countries have caught up and you simply cannot expect to beat them for gold often if the work between the pipes is not at their level.

Good coaching can mitigate a lot of goaltending issues. It certainly says a lot that even if Canada had every eligible player it wouldn't be the overwhelming favourite by any stretch, but this team's potential roster looks good enough to compete with any team and the coach actually has a history of winning at the junior level. There is no need for gloom and doom at this point.

I still can't decide which 13 forwards I want but that's definitely the 7 D on want on this team

Defence felt super easy for me, but forwards will be a coin toss. Canada doesn’t usually have two draft eligible guys in the team, but how can you turn down two guys that are near the top of their league in scoring? Add in that 2018 was fairly weak for Canadian forwards I think they both make it.

There is a decent chance Bowman will let Dach play in the WJC and try to win a gold medal, similar to Jokiharju last season.

Does Perfetti have a legit shot at this team?
Unlikely. He has been good but he hasn't been great. A smaller guy with average skating is unlikely to make it at 17 unless he is bordering on doing some historic stuff. I think the only 17-year-old with an invite is Byfield. Simply put, while Mark and Dale may challenge the conventional Hockey Canada mind-set, they are still going to have to work with those guys. In previous years (yes, I get all years aren't equal) we didn't even give 17 year old D. Strome and Marner invites to camp despite them destroying the OHL (McDavid and Crouse made it as far as 17-year-olds that year), the next year we didn't give Nolan Patrick an invite to camp, and cut PLD, and have left guys like Seguin and Taylor Hall as 17-year-olds. Hockey Canada is loyal to their 19-year-old program of excellence players to a fault, leaving home many talented 18 and under players over the years while countries that do take their elite 17 and 16-year-olds have been beating us (most notably Finland, and to a lesser extent USA).

We have a very similar camp invite list prediction. I am just not including the NHL players.

Lafreniere Veleno Lavoie (replacing Dach)
McMichael Byfield Noel (chemistry during 2 games)
Perfetti Thomas Tomasino (great chemistry during 2 games)
Foudy Dellaandrea Cozens (checking line)
Foote Groulx Mercer
Newhook Rees Dudas
Pelletier Krebs

Byram Bernard-Docker (Byram demonstrated excellent offense)
Bahl Harley
Smith Barron (Smith is better in the third pair, demonstrated less offensive talent)
McIsaac Merkley
Chisholm Addison
Tychonick Drysdale
Schneider

Let's see who is the closest :-)

Daws, Nico
Rodrigue, Olivier
Hofer, Joel
Hunter Jones

Byfield the 20th forward in consideration? Other than that, looks good. Dach being available, as the other poster mentioned, would be absolutely huge.

Lafreniere-Veleno-Dach
McMichael-Byfield-Thomas
Krebs-Hayton-Cozens
Rees-Newhook-Dellandrea
Foudy/Poulin/Pelletier

Smith-Dobson
Byram-JBD
McIsaac-Harley
Bahl/Merkley

Rodrigue
Jones/Hofer

Don’t know why people are down on this team. That’s the best offense in the tournament from top to bottom and the defense is ridiculous. The ascendence of JBD is a big part of that. Looking around, no other nation is really remotely close to matching that group. This isn’t a year where we are the shoe-in favourites, but decent goaltending and avoiding some of the astounding terrible luck we’ve suffered recently, and this team should be in the gold medal game.

Just comparing my roster above to @Pavel Buchnevich projection for the US team, I like our chances against the other top threat this year. Note that while I am presuming we get Dach, I am also allowing that they get Farabee.

Bolded is the superior player IMO.

Of course, additional factors like team chemistry are hard to judge right now and play a big role, and the US often plays more cohesively than we do, presumably due to former history in the NTDP.

Surprised no brayden tracey or adam Beckman given they are leading the WHL in pt/gm among eligible players. Thought they would make it to camp.
