The point is that it wasn't a headbutt in any meaningful sense of the word. Pretty much every single shift in a hockey game features slashing for instance, but it's only called a few times per game, because even in IIHF tournaments they show a reasonable amount of discretion in order to keep to the spirit of the rule. Headbutting is a punishable offence because there is potential for injury. Veleno's "headbutt" had no intent to injure and no possibility of causing injury. To suspend for it is a joke, just as calling post-whistle scrums fights would be a joke or calling every time a player's stick hits another player slashing would be a joke.

There's no hockey-related reason to hit someone else with your helmet.

Slashes and other typical penalized plays are often hockey plays gone wrong.

It's one game, it's cautionary to everyone in the tournament. I don't really have a problem with it.

I'm glad Mercer made it but ... under 2 minutes per period when there are 11 skaters. Gotta think Newhook could have made a difference and/or pushed his way up into the lineup. Seems like they brought a 13th forward but do not trust him to play

There's no hockey related reason to put your hands on someone after a whistle either, and yet players who do such things go unpenalized and unsuspended regularly, the same as players who use their stick on other players even when the puck is nowhere nearby. It was a joke of a suspension. It can't be defended by citing the letter of the law when so many plays in hockey are let go despite going against the wording in the rules, it can't be defended based on it being even a remotely dangerous action. It was a joke and I hope that Hockey Canada takes the IIHF to task for its idiocy.

Meh, it's over and done with.

How often do you see a headbutt like that during a scrum? You see a ton of jabs to the face with a gloved hand in the NHL, but rarely, if ever, a headbutt. I think it would warrant at least a fine in the NHL.

Harmless or not it's against the rules. Veleno is aware of how strict the IIHF is when it comes to these things and he needs to be smarter.

I mean the IIHF is a bit of ajoke when it comes to discipline but youre probably right Veleno should know better just because of that. Dumb play, but bad suspension. In the NHL I think theres 0 chance of that getting anything except maybe a roughing penalty after a scrum

I'm pretty surprised and impressed by the number of Canadians in the crowd. There is always a sizable contingent but it seems better than usual this year.

I'm also surprised by the lack of playing time for Mercer given that Canada just played with 11.

The defence that basically the IIHF is stupid (overly strict) about this stuff so no one should complain that the IIHF is stupid is very poor. The IIHF should be ripped for its stupidity whenever it acts stupidly.

I could see this being a good chance for Canada to come together after some adversity. Lafreniere gone for now due to injury, Veleno given a joke suspension, Hayton getting ripped for being stupid, changing goalies after designating Daws the starter. The fire might burn them or it might bring them together. Also, the way the schedule broke down actually ended up being very advantageous for Canada.
Not going to defend the headbutt, Veleno should know better. I'm happy he and the team got that lesson now rather than losing a player for an elimination game.

That said... the IIHF and the officials have to be more sensible. Misyul mugged Veleno from behind, pulling him down dangerously. No call. If they call that as they should the situation is deescalated, instead Veleno sort of has to stand up for himself and the team who were getting mauled aggressively after every play at the Russian net. Headbutt was a dumb way to do that.

If I'm coaching a team playing Russia I'm sending my players in hard and clean to the net (with the heads up to be ready for abuse) and let the Russians take penalties. They will.

He would get tossed for anything else.

I’ve also noticed all the Canada fans. Really good showing this year.

Oh boys, Canada really makes it tough for themselves on the big ice like always. It looks like there is no Canadian in the top 3 scorers at the end of the tournament.

Sokolov got away with a cross check to Smith's head/neck, so I'm not sure what you can get away with and what you can't. We know that the most meaningless head-to-head contact will be a suspension, so what he did do was the worst choice.

Back to hockey. I am hoping that Joe Valeno can have a game tomorrow, waiting for him to do something
There are more than a few forwards that need to step up.
I was encouraged today but of course the game may have less drama if Russia takes the early game.
First place on the line should bring out our best game yet.

First place is on the line no matter what happens in the Russia game. If Russia wins Canada finishes 4th with a regulation loss and first with any win.

I can see the Czech game tomorrow being a tight one. Hopefully Canada plays a good game defensively and at least one line can step up.

Ty Smith had a really good game today. I really haven’t been a fan but today gives me hope of him someday becoming a player I like to watch.

Considering there’s been no update on if Lafreniere is playing tomorrow, I am going to assume he’s not. Hoping for a miracle tomorrow morning.

I'll be very surprised to see him before the semifinals, if at all.
