The IIHF is known for ineptitude in disciplinary matters, and as usual the penalties have been pretty dumb this year, but that is the stupidest suspension I've ever seen. If that is a headbutt then you might as well call post whistle shoving fights and suspend 90% of the players in the tournament. Another one incoming from the USA-Russia game as well.

No doubt. Also that two handed crosscheck with ten seconds left to the back of the head/neck by one Russian was a far more serious incident than the headbutt.

There was one in today's game as well. They'd have to suspend him as well.
I think they will do that and apparently Khovanov wired a slap shot off the linesman after today’s game. They should look at that as well

f*** it just suspend everyone and let the coaches play to decide who wins the gold medal.

I am anxious to see just what this teams identity is going to be against the Germans.
Some of the p***y cats better have some snarl
Each player needs to look in the mirror
A 5-1 score with 40 plus shots and the feeling that our goaltending is stabilized would make me happy

Well darn near called it
I like Hofer and I will take the better effort
Things are looking better

Veleno knows that the IIHF is strict in the way the game is called. What you watched was a bunch of 19 year olds who are full of testosterone that were embarrassed and bitter that they were getting trounced by a rival. Veleno's emotions got the better of him and he headbutted an opponent. You CANNOT do that in international hockey.

I don't like it, but this was the right call. At least it's just one game.

Terrible post. He didn't deliver a headbutt in the same way that the players who shove each other post-whistle aren't fighting.

Man you guys are a bunch of homers.

Imagine thinking a clear headbutt shouldn't be a suspension.

I mean a clear non accidental headbutt gets a look in the NHL, let alone a game under IIHF rules.

How often do you see a headbutt like that during a scrum? You see a ton of jabs to the face with a gloved hand in the NHL, but rarely, if ever, a headbutt. I think it would warrant at least a fine in the NHL.

Harmless or not it's against the rules. Veleno is aware of how strict the IIHF is when it comes to these things and he needs to be smarter.

So, what's gonna be the lines without lafreniere and veleno?
Still playing 11-7 or 12-6 and one D play F ?

I can see probably addison or drysdale move forward for a game ?

Best guess,

Foote - Hayton - Thomas
McMichael - Cozens - Lavoie
Foudy - Dellandra - Dudas
XXX - Byfeild - Mercer

The fourth line barely gets anytime and the three left wings cycle in for shifts.

This team will hopefully show they are better than the team that played the Russians. Missing Veleno and Lafreniere it will truly come down to compete level and mental strength. They'll have to earn some respect from the refs so I don't expect PPs will bail them out.

Don't want to sound like a downer, but I'm sure the captain lost respect from some teammates for not taking his helmet off. That makes me feel worse for Canada's chances at gold, but it could be something they rally around or not as significant as I am making it. It just goes against everything Canadian teams used to be about.

I am fully expecting a dialed in team that will not thrash anyone on the scoreboard but to leave this game with a solid hockey effort and some swagger going forward
Any stupid newsworthy clips of head butts or helmets left behind
Other teams are improving in case no one notices and this country deserves an effort to be proud of.
Enough said!!

Oh come on they went visor to visor. Warrant a fine in the NHL? This wouldn't even make the news in the NHL lol

It was a soft suspension. But you gotta draw the line somewhere & in a tournament that lacks fighting and most of the time physicality, you can’t let head butting (as soft as it was) become the norm.

The point is that it wasn't a headbutt in any meaningful sense of the word. Pretty much every single shift in a hockey game features slashing for instance, but it's only called a few times per game, because even in IIHF tournaments they show a reasonable amount of discretion in order to keep to the spirit of the rule. Headbutting is a punishable offence because there is potential for injury. Veleno's "headbutt" had no intent to injure and no possibility of causing injury. To suspend for it is a joke, just as calling post-whistle scrums fights would be a joke or calling every time a player's stick hits another player slashing would be a joke.

The defence that basically the IIHF is stupid (overly strict) about this stuff so no one should complain that the IIHF is stupid is very poor. The IIHF should be ripped for its stupidity whenever it acts stupidly.

I could see this being a good chance for Canada to come together after some adversity. Lafreniere gone for now due to injury, Veleno given a joke suspension, Hayton getting ripped for being stupid, changing goalies after designating Daws the starter. The fire might burn them or it might bring them together. Also, the way the schedule broke down actually ended up being very advantageous for Canada.

How are they going to make the decision on go no-go for Lafreniere? Obviously his agent wants to be cautious and rightly so.
