Waskinda surprised they named Dellandrea an alternate over a few returning guys like Lafreniere and McIsaac but it does make sense. If either of those 2 were named it would have either 2 guys on the top line or both on the top pair with letters. Giving it to Dellandrea gives a guy with a letter in the bottom 6 forwards and spreads the leadership group out through the line up.

Hayton with the C makes sense. Guys coming back from the NHL are always gonna get it if nothing else just to try to entice NHL teams to release players. I hope Hayton plays more of a team game now that hes got the C though.

After 2 exhibition games and 1 period of actual tournament play I already know all that is wrong with the team is Barret Hayton. It's all his fault.

Hayton and Lafrenière showing incredible chemistry together on the PP. Would like to see them paired together at ES.

Byfield third scoreless game in a row. Think he needs some time on L4.

Despite all the doubters, Hayton has a monster game and leads the team by example with 2 goals.

Second year in a row where he is outscoring Veleno. Hope he keeps it up, good stuff.
Can't knock him for the 2 goals but he didn't have a very strong game outside of that. A lot of bad passes and poor decisions in the offensive zone.

Thought he was really bad personally. I mean goals are goals. He deserves full credit for those. But without Lafs we are all complaining about how awful Hayton was right now.

@Dominance, what did you think of Lavoie's game? Do you still want him off the team?

I posted this in the GDT, but it is unheard of for a player of Lafreniere's age, size, and skill to play such a hard-working and physical game. He somehow manages to be both the most skilled and the hardest working player on the ice. Best prospect since McDavid in my opinion.

What exactly do you think Hayton did well other than not miss the chances others made for him?
Positionally sound
Very good defensively
Hard on the puck
Went to the front of the net

Are you this critical of all the other players that missed the net on opportunities? Or whiffed on a pass? Or do you have something against Hayton specifically?

ps HE SCORED 2 GOALS!

Yeah, feels like I always like Hayton more than most too. He has such a “pro” game.

That was a good first game for Canada. Faced some adversity and came through, showed good flashes, but also lots to focus no and improve. Lafreniere was obviously the standout at forward, both offensively and with his physical play. Veleno also had a really good game defensively. Cozens was probably the best forward among the other three lines. Bahl stood out on defence, again with his physicality. Addison had a strong game too, which pleases me. I thought that he was terrible in the camp. The game turned completely when Canada became more physical.USA outplayed Canada for the first ten minutes, but after that Canada was comfortably the better team five on five. I hope that they keep the physical play up.

I thought that Bernard-Docker had a fairly poor game. I'm expecting more from him. I also assume that we see Hofer in the Russia game and take the goaltending from there. I thought that Daws was not bad as none of the goals scored on his was especially bad, but I'm open to Hofer impressing against Russia and being the goaltender going forward.

Bob seemed to think that Daws was going to get the Russia game and that they are going to let Daws run with it as the #1.

All this, plus he made some nice plays out there, including with Lafrenière whenever the two shared the ice together. Just a smart, underrated C who is one of the best players at this tournament.

The guy who hasn’t shown me anything yet is Byfield. Scoreless in 3 straight games playing with top players on his line, he needs to step it up.

I feel pretty confident with my Canada for gold prediction after this game, especially with Russia crashing and burning against the Czechs.

We’re sitting pretty at the moment, but it is just one game and fortunes can turn on a dime in tournaments like this.
