Rumor: 2020-21 Trade Rumours and FA Part VIII: Intra-Playoff Edition?

Man Calgary really effed up their contract situation with Tkachuk and got a little unlucky too.

They signed him to a $7M x 3 bridge deal a few months before the pandemic hit and caused the flat cap.

Now they have a 23/24 year old pending RFA after next season looking for a raise on his $7M. He's not gonna be cheap to re-sign. Probably why they're looking at their options.

Take note Joe. You do not want a similar situation with Makar because he's gonna cost a fortune to re-sign to a third deal if you go bridge.

The ask for Eichel is apparently a "top 6 center under 25, a top 4 defenseman, a 1st rounder, and three prospects"

Good post, it’s not his height, it’s his lack of strength. Some of the toughest players in history have been on the shorter side, but they were much stronger

G's lack of reach impacts him just as much as his lack of strength. This doesn't impact forwards as much. They can just be elusive and tenacious around the net, but defenseman have to defend, and they get put in tough situations a lot more than forwards.

A bigger defenseman can recover much better when they lose body position than a smaller defenseman. G does a pretty good job of mitigating this issue during the regular season because he has such a high hockey IQ, but come playoff time, teams spend a lot more time targeting him and putting him in those bad spots.

He can still play a meaningful role in the playoffs he just needs to be insulated by a big stud defenseman or two, and when EJ is out with injury, that means Graves is the only guy to do that. Graves isn't good enough for a big role in the playoffs and he doesn't usually play with G anyway. That's the problem.

The problem isn't necessarily Girard. It's the group surrounding him and whether they can improve it without moving G.

Projecting to reach that level is one thing, but this team is capable of winning the cup right now. If trading Byram brings in the pieces that push us over the top and brings a cup (or two) back to Denver, then we should do it now. Sure, it will hurt if we hear that Byram is blossoming elsewhere. But, a wise man one said: "I can't really hear, because I've got my two Stanley Cup rings plugging my ears"

Id much rather move Girard. We know what he offers. He is an elite puck mover but he is a sub-par defensive defenseman who isn't built for the playoffs. Sakic moved Barrie for the exact same reasons.

Byram has the makings of an elite top pairing two way dman in the mold of Drew Doughty. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

LOL, Shane O'Brien.

If you put Girard on the left side (and leave him there) and pair him with a bigger RDH who can help him with the physical stuff you'll get most of the good and not much of the bad out of him.

Girard and EJ was working well for a reason.

When Girard is asked to play with another lefty who has limitations and doesn't help him much for the defensive stuff he'll struggle.

I disagree. No amount of size and toughness will compensate for Girards lack of size, strength and toughness. This is 4 post seasons in a row that he has shown he is not built for a tough playoff series.

Even Adam Foote next to him wouldn't help. Girard will still need to go in the corners and muck it up and still need to be physical infront of the net. He will never be able to do that no matter who is playing next to him.

Than waive him.

G does a pretty good job of mitigating this issue during the regular season because he has such a high hockey IQ

His iq is average at best, he just takes things really slow so it may trick some people into thinking that simply looking calm and poised equals high iq because that's usually how high iq players are. He's the only player I've seen that will circle back around his own net three times just cause there's no wide open passing lane through the neutral zone, like there's still passing lanes available but they're more guarded so you do need some skill to pull it off. Girard will just skate it back behind his net again and keep doing it til his own players will start looking at him funny and go f*** this i'm going back to the bench. Whenever you put him into actual pressure situations where you need to be able to think fast though like you saw against Vegas he made low iq mistakes one after the other. Can't think on his feet. What's even worse is a lot of times he won't even react, he just stands there like a deer in the headlights cause he has no idea how to handle the situation and can't think of anything. It's like a speech giver suddenly stuttering because he can't read his lines anymore and doesn't have the ability to improv on the spot.

So Girard's reach and size are problem but it's actually not his problem but the group around him's problem? What am I reading here?

I guess Sakic has no interest in Eichel then? Probably just reshuffle the chairs a little and hope things just sorta work out next season???

I mean this stuff is said about literally every team until they win a cup. And winning a cup is f***ing hard. 2 years ago the Tampa Bay Lightning were choke artists. Now they’re looking to be one of the best teams of the last ~20 years. Let’s hope Sakic makes the changes necessary to get that cup.

That'll take executing at the TDL so don't hold your breath

Ugh... Kadri really killed his value this season didn't he? Which is why I wanted to trade him early when his numbers still looked good. Probably going to happen to Girard next season too.

Absolutely not to Matthew Tkachuk. I don't know what player you've all been watching but I've seen a guy that's been a ghost in the playoffs the last two time Calgary has made it, tries to play a physical game but gets bullied when the big boys hit back, and so clearly quit on his team this past season that it was embarrassing to watch.

I want nothing to do with that guy.

I’d be down for Tkachuk, but no way in hell would the cap work. He has 1 year left at 7m, he’s gonna probably end up at 9+ when that deal is up.

I don't think it's that complicated really.

It's the same as any other player that has weaknesses in their game. You insulate them with a defensive partner that doesn't have these issues and you try to get the right matchups when you can.

If you don't have enough "big" defenseman that are good enough to play a top 4 role, then the smaller defenseman are going to be easier to exploit, because you can't shelter them enough.

Landeskog 7.75M x 8 yrs
Danault 5.5M x 6 yrs
Jost 1M x 1 yrs
Bellemare 0.8M x 1 yrs
Makar 9.25M x 7 yrs
Oleksiak 2.75M x 2 yrs
Timmins 0.85M x 1 yrs
Grubauer 5.5M x 4 yrs

Not sure if realistic with those numbers. Raanta is mostly just a placeholder and Francouz is buried in AHL.

Kept Jost as a LW, where he can shift to 3C or 4C in case a center gets injured. Feel like we'd need more depth and/or better 4C but those could be added at the TDL.
