Believe it or not, the Kings were a top 4 possession team last season. They mostly had shitty shooting and offense. They’ve dropped considerably behind that spot so far this season, producing far less chances and spending a lot more time in their own end.

Seems like having Jeff Carter back in the lineup and playing the likes of Kurtis MacDermid more frequently hasn’t helped the team much. And Olli Maatta is far worse than Forbort ever was. This team didn’t play this poorly last season.

Toffoli. Martinez. Clifford. Walker and Roy not injured.

We're getting the changing of the guard but tonight was a trash lineup due to injuries and COVID. They aren't a playoff team at full strength so this isn't surprising.

The lack of energy and grit is a long term problem though and I'm all over that issue. Again, nicest and softest team in the league for a few seasons. I'm more concerned with attitude than results in a game like this but I can say that for every game since Game 1 of 2018-19. It's gotta change at some point or none of this prospect shit matters.

Of course TM puts the stale line of Brown-Kopitar-Iafallo when things don’t go our way.

Time to give Durzi a shot?

Stale or not, that was the only team that generated an extended offensive zone shift and when the vaaaaast majority of the team was under 30% CF, Kopitar and Iafallo were at or near 60.

Time on ice!

Iafallo (19:36) - Kopitar (20:46) - Brown (18:49)
Grundstrom (15:09) - Vilardi (16:38) - Kaliyev (14:42)
Kempe (15:52) - Amadio (13:56) - Carter (15:17)
Wagner (9:42) - Andersson (10:38) - Moore (9:58)

Anderson (22:12) - Doughty (24:17)
MacDermid (16:38) - Clague (22:01)
Maatta (17:02) - Alt (15:38)

The good news: We had our first Arty party!
The bad news: *gestures broadly at everything else*

Really felt for Clague tonight, what a shitty position to be in, going from Matt Roy to your wrong side and Macdermid or Maatta mostly next to you. I thought he did mostly well with unfortunate results.

Games like tonight should serve as a reminder that just because you are older it doesn't automatically mean you are a benefit to the young guys.

Not one of the veteran forwards tried to take ownership of the team and take the pressure off of the kids. Doughty did his part from the back, even with the slapstick ending. But the forwards just went thru the motions. Not a driver among them tonight.

Too f***ing true. I'd love to see Madden - Kupari - Kaliyev up. I'd like to see anyone who gives a shit up.

The winning streak to end the season last year took place after the first three names you mentioned were gone.

This was the first game without Walker and Roy, but the team was collectively playing just as poorly prior to this mess.

A lot of the veterans coupled with the younger players showing their inexperience is going to make this season a struggle. The 2019-20 Kings looked considerably better than the 2018-19 Kings. That isn’t revisionism.

Things might get better as the season progresses, but the first month of the season has been pretty ugly to watch.

Honestly I'm pretty much at a loss for words. Even with no real expectations, or at least thought the game would get ugly, didn't expect to get completely shown up by the Ducks. If not for Petersen, you think TM is madder?

I honestly haven't seen the team collectively play this bad since Willie D. If not for that era, this would be one of the worst Kings efforts I've ever seen from buzzer to bell. Nothing happening defensively, nothing offensively. No possession. No hitting. Zero heart/effort. And that's the biggest problem I have with it, just a totally gutless game.

We're terrible, but the Ducks had zero business running us out of the building like that. And if you're going to spend that much time in your own end NOT hitting, you're just chasing the game all over.

Beyond pathetic. This is the kind of game that made me stop watching before.

And while some of it is because of the patchwork defense and this not being a team that can weather a single injury, I'm looking at the vets, not the replacements.

Sure, but I've liked the process this season. This is a joke lineup. Vets mailed it in like they always do when it seems like it doesn't matter. I'm tired of that shit but nothing is surprising tonight and I'm not going to put much weight into it.

And I think last season was so long ago that it's forgotten how trash it was. It was brutal and very boring.

Oh and games like this certainly will make a guy like Matt Roy much richer. His RFA deal after the season just added a few hundred K to it after tonight

I'm really rooting for Clague but he had (3) really nice, perfect tape-to-tape passes out of his zone.... to the other team, that led to not only a good scoring chance for them but then hemmed The Kings in their zone the entire shift.

These are growing pains but the 1st pass shouldn't be such an issue. Seems like it was the entire team tonight though.

I mean yeah this game was brutal, but let's not forget that we lost two of our top four defensemen and two of our top nine forwards. At this point, anyone with more than half a season's worth of games played is a veteran. Not many teams can suffer that loss at the same time and be okay.

He refuses to use the boards. Up the gut passes are reserved for those who can actually pass the puck.

Yeah I find it hard to pick on any individual tonight since it was so widespread.

Any other night I'd be alllll over Grundstrom because shot attempts should not be literally 20-1 no matter who you're out there with but with the contagious toxicity and complete lack of chemistry it's just a 'burn the tapes' sort of effort (at least in regards to my criticism, for the actual pros I'm sure they've got plenty of footage of stuff to improve )

This line looked really good last AHL pre-season game. :)

(however, it was against another AHL team...)

The Ducks (and Kings) are essentially AHL teams, and some of the lines we are icing are worse than their AHL counterparts. Wagner - Amadio - Moore? I mean holy shit they'd maybe be third liners for the Reign, right? I'm not even kidding. You've got Byfield, Turcotte, Madden, Fagemo, Thomas, and Kupari down there. Are any of those three plugs better than the six of them?

Forward support was really bad tonight as well, Ducks just saw Kings forwards stationary waiting for the pass. Pretty easy to read and move in for the check or pick the pass off. But I guess that also gets back to the Kings could not hit anyone in stride with a pass. Just a big pile of dung tonight.
