I'd say there's no reason to go get Dunn at this point.

If Myers were out for the season, sure. But I think we can handle 2-3 more weeks, especially with Ghost back.

Unless it's a Gus-for-Dunn trade - I'd take that right about now.

Or Hagg for Dunn if you can get Armstrong drunk enough. I imagine they want to be cap neutral(ish)

Depends what you mean by kill in expansion. There are options.

I think probably:

Savard (if he does not cost as much as he probably will... he is a #4 and maybe too expensive)
Dunn (issue is expansion... ideally want to keep him going forward)
Merrill (just really good inside own redline, good out-letter... useless in OZ)

off the top of my head would be available, are good upgrades (capable #4 level at worst) and don't really affect expansion. Merrill and Savard are expiring... Dunn? Might not get taken but if he was... not end of world depending on cost to acquire.)

Oleksiak, McCabe, TvR, Nemeth, Koekkoek would be other upcoming UFAs who are "fine" and would be upgrades.
I think we would have to get rid of a roster player, which potentially could be a good thing

You mean the Stecher who posted E +/- of -11.9, -6.1, -7.2, -3.4 his first four seasons?
Yes, he's 4th in minutes on Detroit, of course, Marc Staal is 5th. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

It's just a question of which trash you prefer.

Stetcher. I still prefer Stetcher.

Though, an even better dman would be preferable.

Hagg is a real problem. Unfortunately, he is the kinda play this org falls for and has a blind spot for. Even the best Flyers teams have always had that player. I honestly think hes regressing.

They have options for the bottom pair...i hardly think he should be a lock. Almost would rather role with with Morin-Freidman on the bottom pair at this point.

He does look even worse this year than last.

I'm not so sure, and it certainly depends on price, if Ghost is back, we're talking adding to the 3rd pair.
So I'd be reluctant to pay a 1st or 2nd or a top 10 prospect. We're talking depth in a clusterf--- season where the smartest moves could be deep sixed by the wrong person breathing on the wrong person in April.

Merrill - Detroit ain't goin' nowhere, durability an issue but you might take a low cost gamble in April
Nemeth - same with Detroit, but they'll want a lot more for him
McCabe - might become available if Buffalo falls out of the race in March, but he'll cost
Koekkoek - getting #6 minutes with a young D-man pushing him, Edm might "fire sale" him

Savard - CBJ is in weak division. so doubtful they'll be selling, no depth behind him
Dunn - buyer beware, good sophomore season then has regressed, not worth an overpay
Oleksiak - 4th in minutes on a team that sees itself as a contender, he's not going anywhere
TVR - is he breaking down?

He looks the same to me, but he's getting the results he deserves instead of getting bailed out by the players around him. The PDO crash is here.

I thought he was just as braindead last year but moved around a bit better. This year he looks like a well-fed sloth.

Berube believed in his fleshy heart that Vinny was better than Couturier.
He also won a cup. So while he wasn't a good talent evaluator here, he clearly wasn't a clueless coach.

Not to sound old school. But we could really use some size back there to help our PK too. We have a relatively small defensive lineup outside Sanheim and Myers.

He does look even worse this year than last.

I think the injuries had too many playing out of position and with the wrong partners.
If the top four stabilizes, AV will probably mix and match and try to find a 3rd pair that works.

And if they don't find one, then they'll make moves in March, either rotate young D-men from the Phantoms and see if one sticks (like they did at forward last season) or see if someone shakes loose before the TDL. But it's not likely there will be many D-men available until April 1, trades tend to be bunched a week before the TDL, and this year more teams may stay in contention closer to the TDL.

TDL April 12, end of season, May 8.

It's not a matter of Hagg v Stecher, I doubt Stecher would have come here, he went to a team where he had a legitimate shot at top 4 minutes - the same way Barrie went to a team where he'd play on PP1 with talented players - players choose their destination on a number of factors, and money is only one of them. You don't break the bank to convince 3rd pair talents to choose you.

If Friedman wins the #5 job, we're down to Hagg/Braun/Gus for #6, with Hogberg and Zamula pushing them.
And it's not just a matter of adding talent (and the cost), but who would be the best fit with Friedman on the 3rd line.
If Friedman goes belly up, then a trade may make more sense.

It's simply too early to make panic moves for marginal improvements.
Who knows, maybe Gus with a few more weeks improves his defense from putrid to meh, i.e., he's "Dunn."
Stranger things have happened, especially in the season without a training camp.

I can't wait until big Z slays the AHL in a month's time, get called up and makes the last spot his alone on the roster.

Provorov - Ghost
Sanheim - Myers
Zamula - Braun
Gus

Oooof!

Dont do anything this season because... risk. And our prospects will have another year!

Next year - Dont play prospects because they havent proven to be better than our #1d, and because they're still waiver eligible while Braun isnt. Continue to ice slop and defend coach's decisions because....reasons.

Wait, I thought we didn't want to block our prospects?

The late start for the AHL is a problem, had they started in January we'd have a better read on Hogberg and Zamula, the two most likely callups. And whether that extra CHL season for Wylie has him closer to the NHL. But if we're going with prospects, doesn't it make sense to do what we did last year, rotate forwards through until NAK took the job?

Same with the TDL, if you think York is NHL ready after his second college season, do you want to trade for someone or just give York a couple weeks in the AHL then call him up - he won't be the first college player to go from college to a NHL playoff.

So unless someone makes "an offer he can't refuse" I'm hoping that Fletcher keeps his cool.

Byslma also won a Cup. Sometimes bad coaches land in the right spot and stay out of the way just long enough to cash in.

I think it’s a pipe dream they get rid of Hagg before his contract is up anyways with his relationship with Lindblom and everything that happened. I think they will just let him walk after next year.

Hopefully he is the #7 next year but we all know how that works.
