No on Eichel until we see how he recovers from that neck injury that involves his spine. That concerns me as it can be extremely serious. It's not an area of the body I want to hear about being injured. That means watching how he plays in games in 2021-22. Waiting also buys us time to see what we have in the prospects and what holes need to be filled. One of Byfield, turcotte, or vilardi might make a leap in development.

Eichel's NMC doesn't kick in until after next season anyway.

With the preface that I personally 100% agree with the bolded, here's the counter-argument: now might be a good time to see if they can acquire him at a bit of a "discount." Of course, if the "discount" means a 2nd rounder instead of a 1st rounder and the Kings still are parting with Byfield and Bjornfoot, it's likely not worth the risk anyway. And if Byfield blows up and Eichel never plays another NHL game, Blake would eventually likely find himself the ex-GM of the Kings based in large part on this failed gamble...

not that I'm endorsing the trading of Byfield ... but you think it's about 'positive publicity'? I can tell you there is more concern over putting butts in the seats as opposed to positive publicity...you know what sells tickets? Good teams who win games.

With AEG and Byfield both are important. Byfield will generate a ton of opportunities for them. Having people in the seats is of course revenue but they will move someone else before they move Byfield. They need to win so I am not saying that they won't go after someone to help with getting more eyes on them.

They have probably already factored in how they can market the kid.

For tonight’s game with the Blues, I’m submitting a shutout as my selection in First Goal of the Game contest! I didn’t see a thread for tonight’s game.

I don't see the Kings trading Byfield for multiple reasons. Marketing him is one of those reasons. He is the highest African-American draft pick in NHL history. Just look at the positive publicity they got for the pick. Of course he is ultra talented but in a diverse city, he fits well. The NHL probably doesn't want him buried in Buffalo. They want him starring in a major media market.

Oh boy.....

LA also has a big armenian community. alot of people wanted bogosian drafted instead of doughty...... people don't always get what they want.

Tanks me to god for that one. We were also supposed to trade for Scott Gomez at one point so we could have "The Taco Tally". God people are dumb...

Oh boy.....

He is an ultra talented player in a town that will probably welcome the fact that he could represent things that go beyond just the sports aspect. I don't have a horse in the race either way.

I also happen to think that the Kings should wait on trading any of their top kids at this point. They need to see a little bit more what kind of ceiling these guys have.

Did L.A.'s large Hispanic demographic take any interest in Martinez? If there was I didn't notice it. Maybe Amart isn't a relevant enough player, but he did score the most iconic goal in franchise history. Maybe the Kings aren't a relevant enough team.

I honestly don't see Byfield being half black as making any difference at all in terms of interest in the Kings in this market. I could be wrong of course.

Could be 100% right in that regard. The Kings may not care one way or another. It was just a thought.

Drafting a player because of their background would be the dumbest thing ever. Let's not pretend that happens at all.

However, recognizing and positively reacting to that player's background is a smart, excellent byproduct.

While I agree it’s dumb, but players are drafted because of background and where they’re from a decent amount. Montreal is a prime example of this.

And Byfield would probably only draw buts into seats if he was American. If he grew up in LA, Chicago, NYC it’d be a draw that an African American kid playing the NHL, possibly being a top 20 player. But from Canada? Probably not.

The Kings drafted Byfield because they see great potential with him and liked him more than Stutzle. That being said I think the Kings take great pride in having the highest drafted black player in NHL history. And you can tell with how much they have been promoting Blake Bolden, Akil Thomas and Quinton Byfield over the past several months. I don't think many NHL team would take a player in the hopes of marketing toward a specific group of people, but you're not going to turn down marketing a guy, or women in the case of Blake Bolden, if the opportunity comes.

You mean we shouldn’t draft a player because he’s German?
