Then maybe trying to trade to improve the team right now isn't in the best interest of the organization?
That would depend on what move you're making. As I said, I'm not in favor of giving up significant assets in exchange for a rental player for a playoff run or something.

But when you're developing young players I do think it's important to have some roster competition, and to have them be on a decent team that's improving.

We're past the tank phase, we're not finishing bottom 5 regardless. Giving up a 3rd round pick or something is reasonable.

I mean, that's the question isn't it. Do we think the old core can challenge again? Do we think the youth movement will ever be as good as the old core is now?
1. No

2. It better be, or Blake won't be around more than another 2-3 years.

Well, if the old core can't challenge, then the young core won't be competing in 2-3 years. So, Blake is f***ed anyways by your timeline.

Well the original thought by this current management crew was that the old core could contend and win more cups. That’s why they fired DL, because they thought they could do better. It unraveled on them pretty fast.

In terms of timeline, I think Luc and Blake will be around for awhile. Winning isn’t a priority as much as other things the org spends a lot of time on.

You aren't getting anytbing worthwhile with a 3rd round pick to give the youth definite competition.

Let the centers earn a spot over Amadio once they're healthy. Is he that much worse than fillers like Trent Klatt or the like?

Amadio had a decent game last game, more assertive, less disastrous in his own end, having said that, he's holding a place until JAD comes back or Lias Andersson figures it out, or something, no reason to keep Kupari up and burn his ELC, but it was good to get him a taste, and tell him, you need to work on this etc etc, and let him go play. They SHOULD be doing that with Turcotte and Byfield as well, bring them up 2 games, give them that taste, and then say go work on this this and this, etc.

Yup, and that is Blake's fault. He is the GM who made the decision that Kopitar, Doughty, etc. could win a cup in their 30's.

Still think the Kings should've traded Kopitar for Ryan Johansson??? That one I won't forget lol.

Johansson is one of many I brought up for consideration. I wouldn't have liked to see Johansson signed to the contract he eventually received.

What great things have the Kings accomplished since signing Kopitar to his third contract? I never said Kopitar sucked as a player. He would have made a fine addition to a contending team. What I said was given where the Kings were at as an organization at the time, his signing made little sense for the Kings as an organization trying to win Stanley Cups. It obviously made some of Kopitar's fans very happy, which is something I care about very little.

Anyone know the goalie status for tonight? How about an update on JAD??

Gary Simmons is coming out of retirement for tonight's game.

Part of the point of re-signing Kopitar and Doughty to big money is that they are still top quality players now. And having those types of players available to mentor and practice against for our top young prospects is invaluable. Their contracts have zero impact on the Kings currently. Even if you think they do go ahead and replace those contract values with lesser players and if you find better players for less money explain to me how they realistically end up on the Kings.

If the games get snowed out, that will be a real blessing for the Kings even if the games get bunched at the end of the season. Quick, Petersen, JAD are all hurt and I can imagine Walker and Roy could use more down time.

Tonight is on. No snow yet.

Sunday may still be on even with snow since fans in seats is not a thing yet.

The Monday game with the Blues might be the victim as that requires an open airport for a flight in the middle of the storm.

BTW, Look at Aves D. They are down 4 core D and have no D players under contract that are not on the NHL or Taxi. Crazy.

Unless Blake was already making decisions while DL had the job, then Blake isn't to blame for Kopitar.

The Kings were leading the division, and 4th overall the day Kopitar re-signed. DL had already made 15-16 a year that he was going for it by getting Lucic.

Kopitar and Doughty were getting their Cup contracts, if they wanted to stay, same as Quick and Brown did. That was baked into the cake at an organizational level. It didn't matter who the GM or President was. What Cup winning core player hasn't gotten a retirement contract if he was still playing well? It's the cost of winning.

Yep, it's the same case for Toews and Kane as well in the Blackhawks. It's almost the same circumstances as Kopitar. Since they got their big contracts, they got a first round exit, got swept against Nashville, missed playoffs for two years, and somehow managed to get into the first round as a underdog in the play-ins against the Oilers before reality checks in against Vegas.

Do you want to be the one to tell the Blackhawks at their peak to do away with Kane or Toews after they won their 3rd cup with those guys? That would be stupid, so they get their retirement contracts and think, at the time, maybe this won't hurt us at the end of it and maybe those guys can get the Blackhawks one more deep run to challenge for the cup.

Think of all the years the Penguins couldn't get it done with Crosby and Malkin after they got their one against Detroit.
