What's the fascination with Dunn? He's not good. Guys, he's getting 72% offensive zone starts! 59% last season. He's being sheltered to a ridiculous extent. He's not good at defense, at all. For reference, MacD is at 55.8% which is highest on the team. Then Clague and Strand, then Walker at a respectable 51.7%. Dunn is a specialist who's not that special. Pass.

I can honestly say, I’m fascinated with plenty of things however, Vince Dunn is not one of them. Just chucking some names out there to hash over.

The statistics noted above paint a murky picture. Don’t know if Parayko being out is forcing Dunn into more of a roll but those numbers will not help him this summer when he becomes an RFA.

I know this isn't relevant to the current conversation, but I was having a conversation about Seversen/Ty Smith and their success since the Devils returned to play and while looking up some stats I noticed something. Since 2/14, Doughty leads all regular Dmen in CF%, FF%, is 2nd in SCF. It feels like the early to mid '10's all over again.

I get it, didn't mean for it to come off as picking on you. Independent of your reference, he's been brought up here a number of times as a potential pickup.

Nah, all good man. I like to throw stuff out there and have the discussion.

The numbers you provided show he has not been up to par. No bueno, Vince.

People thought he was washed, but we really had no choice but to have faith that if he was partnered with someone who wasn't trash he'd bounce back at least to true #1 D level. He's only 31, which isn't old in defenseman years. Blake made a good point in the Fox and Faust podcast (I think that's where I heard it) that he told the remaining vets that there would be no more bloodletting and uncertainty with the roster. That probably had some impact on his play and the musical chairs of partners he's had to deal with.

The Devils have actually been a fun team to watch this year. They got some nice pieces on that roster that people may not know too much about because it’s NJ.

Really like Miles Wood (former NHLer Randy Wood’s kid). Sharangovich has been a pleasant surprise as well. And you mentioned Ty Smith, he’s another one that is having a fine start to his NHL career.

Mackenzie Blackwood has been very good this year and I think you can make the case he’s one of the top 2-3 goalies in that division.

I didn’t think Lindy Ruff was the ideal choice for them but he looks to be working out well thus far.

Not too mention they have a fair bit of cap space so they look to be setup well.

I haven't listened to the podcast, but I heard something similar from him just after the trade deadline. Coincidentally that is when the team as a whole started playing better. I really do think the mental aspect is always ignored when people discuss players, notably the type who were so quick to cast off Doughty(...Dom). It's such a tough sport to play and requires so much focus, especially somebody whose game revolves around their hockey IQ, that any dip in intensity is going to show up immediately on ice.

I've only caught a couple of games, but Hughes has been noticeably better which is really exciting. Also, haven't seen Hischier since he got back, but from what I've heard he has been a stud. It's a tough division for them, but I'm glad the team is doing well.

I just don't understand the level of anxiety here about losing a bottom-pairing D to Seattle. Honestly I would be sadder if Seattle picked Quick.

I think the only D the Kings potentially lose is Maatta, and I think there’s a good chance of that happening. I would be surprised if the protected list isn’t:

Doughty
Walker
Clague
Roy

Kopitar
Iafallo
Kempe
Grundstrom

I guess Strand could be taken, but after seeing Vegas succeed Seattle isn’t going to take a 24 year old with a handful of games played.

The Kings unprotected list is a bunch of dime/dozen guys and players in the twilight of their careers. The only prospect that might be intriguing is Andersson. If it comes down to guys like Frk, AA, or Maatta, I can see Olli gone. Either way this draft isn’t going to sting in the slightest, and it happened at a perfect time for us.

Hughes has been definitely better with the puck this year. Felt like last year he was trying to make the highlight reel no look passes and NHL defenders were handling that with ease. His shot is improving, but definitely isn't a strength at this point. Three of Nico's four games have been against Buffalo, so I'm trying not to draw too many conclusions. First couple games he definitely looked rusty since he hadn't played in almost a full year.

Mild optimism for Pavel Zacha's recent hot streak. Feel like he's been moved from center to wing a ton in the last couple of seasons and it's hurt his development. Right now he's on Hischier's wing which might be an ideal spot since he doesn't have to be the driver for the line. Probably won't ever justify his draft position, but if Zacha can become a 25 goal winger that at least can be useful.

Nikita Gusev on the other hand has taken a step back after a decent second half last year. Devils really need a boring penalty killing defenseman though. If we had even just an average penalty kill, the Devils could be in the playoff conversation.

One thing I was shocked about Hughes when I watched was that he seemed to be surprisingly strong, he won a couple of battles that I wasn't expecting. That obviously won't be his game, but for his size I was impressed.

Speaking of the playoffs, who do you see coming out of the east? I was thinking Bruins, Flyers, Caps, Isles, but it's always hard to count out the Pens.

Edit: I guess this conversation kind of left Kings rumors/roster and should be over in the around the league, haha.

I know Hoven mentioned it but I was thinking about a scenario were Hextall pursued Quick after he became Pitts gm.

LA needs him this year as there is nothing decent in the pipe after the current tandem. I wonder tho if Pitt would swing a deal after the expansion draft.

Seemed an obvious connection if Pitt is looking for a vet tender.

Would be hard to see him somewhere else tho.

you should

I have to be honest with you, I don't really like Faust and I really don't think I could get through an entire podcast of him hosting. I actively seek out the opposing broadcasts for Kings games to avoid hearing him at this point. I'm sure he is an awesome guy behind the scenes, but as a broadcaster/host I am not a fan. I feel the same way about guys like Marek, so it is not unique to Faust.

Be that as it may... their conversation with Blake was great
