Thank you, Matt. Yes in Nagano. The book said it was two players who got drunk and did some damage. "A few broken chairs, divots in the walls, water on the floor where a fire extinguisher had been let off...and a bicycle thrown over the railing." Hilarious was Burke wrote that one of the chairs was broken by asst coach Paul Holmgren sitting in it--"they were built to hold Japanese men, and Paul was a big guy."
Sadly, in my opinion, Burke writes regarding the damage, "That was it. The damage was very slight and very limited. No big deal at all...All minimal stuff." Then, "If they had really trashed the room, we would have fined them and then given the Japanese the money. But there was nothing like that, so there was no need to take disciplinary action."
In 1997-98 Jeremy Roenick made $3,600,000 ($5.7M today). He couldn't do the right thing and pay for the damage?? The NHL stiffed the Japanese and the players walked unpenalized?? That's ok??
Amazingly (and without irony) Burke also writes, "Because it was the American team and everyone loves to hate the Americans, the whole thing blew up."
Thank you, Burkie, for helping further why 'everyone hates the Americans.' Unbelievable lack of accountability for a professional athlete representing his country.
