Yup, unfortunately we are stuck with him unless someone jumps on it. Someone offered hall 8 million you never know

$8m for 1 year for a soon to be 29 year old. Doughty will be 31 in 2 months, with 7 years, and $76m still to be paid, whose play has gone down to either age or pouting. Maybe both. At least until 2023, it's Toronto or nothing, and that's only if Toronto wants him. Then after 22-23, we're talking a soon to be 34 year old Doughty, with still 4 years and $44m left. Then he can pick 7 teams.

You figure with some decent talent in the pipeline, you hope that can push Doughty into caring. Byfield has to be a high end player though, or else Doughty won't give him the time of day. The old core isn't driving the bus anymore. It's all on the players from Vilardi's age and younger. They will determine what Doughty looks like as a player. Well hopefully. Hopefully Doughty isn't just done. If that's the case, they might as well rebuild the rebuild of the rebuild, because that can't be $11m in dead cap in a competitive situation.

By the time the Doughty contract would be a problem in any way we'd have no problem dealing with it.

You'd think the guy had earned just a little bit of rope around here for his play over the years to think he's good enough to bounce back but good to see we've moved to throwing dirt on his casket despite him closing out the season strong.

The problem would be that Doughty used to be the young guy who could have a bunch of veterans tell him what's what(at least a little bit, we still saw the tantrums). Even the guys his own age were peers. 1st round type guys. Kopitar, Richards, Carter. Now Doughty is an elder statesman. Most of his peers that are left are on their last legs. So that same accountability probably isn't there. Little sense of urgency. There's no other vet the Kings can bring in anymore to show Doughty the way. Doughty is now a champ with all the money. Maybe if Crosby were here, but that's about it.

The only hope there is is for the youth to inspire Doughty. Byfield, Vilardi, Petersen, Bjornfot, Turcotte, these guys have to prove to Doughty that they can compete in meaningful games. The franchise is now on their shoulders, and only time will tell how much Doughty weighs them down. If he does.

is it just me, or does it really suck sitting on the sidelines

They have been since 2016, minus Kovalchuk, which blew up in their face. Should be used to it by now. Maybe if the team shows that they're decent, they do something at the deadline if they're actually in the race. We're probably talking about next summer before they make any real moves though. Even that might be early. Sort of depends on what happens with Seattle. Maybe the deadline of 2022. If the Kings aren't in a playoff conversation by then, there's probably a problem.

One issue is Petersen will be 27, and scheduled to be a UFA by 2022. Quick will still have a year left, and his buyout would still have a $4m hit in 22-23. If Petersen is good, the Kings might be spending a decent amount on goaltending for a year. At least it's before most of the good prospects are due a new contract. Other than Vilardi, the Kings should be ok with that until 2023.

Imagine being a team that’s viewed as a contender and sitting on your hands and doing nothing. That’s what Boston is doing.

How much can they do? They have $11m in space, and DeBrusk and Grzelcyk are RFA's. Those two will probably cost them, $6m? $7m? That doesn't leave much. Smith was a decent signing though. A little more depth up front for a mostly 1 line team. Could still probably add a Vatanen or Hamonic on D.

Let me guess you had the same dramatic response when Richards game fell off a cliff.

I'm not saying he can't make a comeback, I'm saying he's been shit for two years so it's hard to know where his game will be since his recent consistent play has been bad.

Now Drew has been less than stellar the last 2 years, but you also have to look at the whole situation. He’s on his 4th coach in 4 years, and his D partners have gone from O’Donnell, Scuderi, Muzzin. To Mcnabb, Forbort, Hutton. That’s a heck of a drop off, they’ve pretty much decided to partner Drew with anybody because they believe he do a D pair by himself. I personally never understood why they broke up Muzzin/Doughty, why make your top D pair weaker.

But I will hold my judgment of Drew until he finds a D partner that’s competent or at least one he has chemistry with. They just kept throwing him partners expecting he’d just mesh with them no problem. No top Dman in the league anchors a pair by themselves with journeyman depth players, but Drew’s been doing it for years now.

I gave Richards too much rope based on his promise to Dean Lombardi when it was clear his body was toast too.

But you immediately getting defensive and comparing Doughty to Mike Richards tells me all I need to know about this conversation so thanks, carry on.

I've been tough on DD8 over the last couple years. Though, this break has allowed me some perspective. The last quarter of this season, he actually looked better. The team as a whole, looked better. DD8 has a lot of miles on that 30 yr old body. It's going to be really difficult for him to carry this team by himself, which I think he tried to do all too often the last couple of seasons. With a little help (which I believe is coming, Bjornfot cough.cough) his game will come around.

We haven't seen Our team play in a long time. Hopefully we'll see them play sooner than later. Right now it's difficult to have fresh opinions on any of the Kings players, they just haven't played. Not saying anyone's opinions are wrong or off and I dig good conversation. We should probably wait a bit before we panic sell, is all I'm suggesting.

Doughty is still clearly a top-flight NHL defenseman, but he is no longer at the peak of his game. The immediate help he needs would come at a cost, and this is why big-money, long-term contracts are a bad idea.

The Kings are going to have to hope one of the young defensemen on an ELC can partner effectively with Doughty.

the Kings severe lack of activity tells me AEG is planning on having no fans in attendance next season.

This break should be killer for him. Time home with the kid and to right his head and get lots of rest. But he'd better be working for it.

I saw a dude trying to do too much at times with the puck and being lazy and sloppy and a petulant little bitch without it. Lots of selfish mistakes. That's not 'good' by any means, but I chalk it up to mental mistakes and a lack of focus rather than a lack of ability. I hope his ego becomes one of those good chips on the shoulder rather than him just burning out like Chelios. A better team should help, too. Like the other dmen entering their 30s in Karlsson and Hedman, they've gotta figure out the 2nd half of their careers, it will absolutely look different then at 24.

The Kings and teams in the West have never been a big FA attraction. I didn't expect much for signings but I did expect 3-4 trades to improve the on ice product. I'd like to see an offer sheet or something to get excited about.

I think Doughty is fine, he is the youngest member of the core and we all know that Doughty isn't in decline. It's dangerous for him to be lackadaisical, but he pretty much is our defense. It would take a significant drop to change the plan on Drew. He's been very durable and will likely get the Chara treatment in LA.

I think it's fair to question where he's currently at in his head and in his body; I'm just also willing to give him the benefit of 'show me' this year, especially given how he finished last year and how he showed up when he 'wanted' to (example game vs. Tkachuk at the beginning of the year). All the buzz surrounding the team is now positive and he has to buy in and be a part of that. I don't really blame him for checking out of the Willie D circus. I DO blame him for a large portion of last year.

I don't think the activity level is or was dependent on fans in the stands.

Should the Kings look into getting Vatanen?
He was solid last time I saw him play.

They've got 5 sure bets to be on the roster already. Some of the young guys have to start getting time. Anderson is 21. Clague is already 22.
