Two very different things here. Kopitar is a hall of famer, one of the very best pure hockey players ever, still a true #1 center, remarkably resilient and a true gentleman.

But you need someone else to be the leader of your team if you want to win. There is a difference between being a perfect role model and being a leader. That's just something that isn't in his vast arsensal. He settles down instead of inspiring up, which is wonderful if you have both options on your roster.

But there is a vocal minority here that lays part of the blame at Kopitar's feet for the team being bad. It's some very poor correlation = causation logic that's going on.

Clearly Kopitar finishing 12th in scoring among centers with 50 points in 56 games is a sign that he’s nothing more than a grinding center. He only put up more points than Brayden Point, Patrice Bergeron, Mat Barzal, y’know, players who every sensible person would consider 3rd line centers.

It’s dumbfounding to see the disrespect Kopitar gets from the clueless masses.

@Ziggy Stardust . Yes, I didn't word that correctly. I was trying to point out, and poorly I might add, that Kopi, at this stage in his carrer should really be in a 2nd line role. Sadly the Kings don't have that replacement, so Kopi is logging massive minutes needlessly. Kopi is a monster. He is the best player on the Kings, and is a first ballot HOFer. Hope that clarifies.

Love your posts.

That’s fair, I think I’m just fed up reading the disrespect he gets from others around these parts. Eventually he is going to have less responsibilities in terms of minutes, but that’s going to happen when the likes of Byfield and Vilardi are ready to take on big minutes. But that probably won’t be happening until a year or two from now, and he will remain an important part of the team.

Just look at the impact a soon to be 36-year-old Patrice Bergeron has as a #1 center on Boston. And they don’t have anybody coming up who will be replacing him either.

Kopitar being 12th on the voting was a little surprising, but I guess he fell victim to the Kings being a pile of garbage that generated no buzz at all most of the season. He had a career high FO%, was right around his average for TOI, 50pts in 56 games.. You'd think being Kopitar he'd get more votes.

Not Kopitar's fault, but Bergeron is doing all that at $3m less on the cap. But, the Bruins have just the one Cup, so, not as expensive as two. Also has had some help that still cared in Krejci. And an explosive winger in Marchand, who got more productive as he aged. And another explosive younger winger in Pastrnak.

In every way, Kopitar lost pretty much whatever help he's had. Up to and including a management team that chose, rightly or wrongly, whatever, to strip the team. As well as a previous management team that gave him the C after unceremoniously taking it away from the guy that should probably still have it, in a last ditch effort to try and figure out a way to squeeze out a few more wins before they were fired for driving the team into the ground.

Imagine if Kopitar was skating with 60% offensive zone starts flanked by Marchand and Pastrnak.

He'd be only behind McDavid/Draisaitl/Matthews tier in scoring.

Bergeron is great, but Kopitar is a better player and has been throughout his career. It'll be interesting to compare the HOF votes when their times come to see if any Canadian/East coast biases come into play. Spoiler alert, it will.

I rate Bergeron a little higher, similar on ice, but higher in the intangibles. Purely subjective of course.

i don't agree with it but I think bergeron is going to be remember more favorably than Kopitar league wide. Only because he is canadian and he plays for an original 6 team

Kopitar is barely going to be remembered league wide. Book it.

The Kings were only relevant for three seasons out of his career. He's only been in the playoffs seven times resulting in either the aforementioned relevant seasons or a first round exit. Didn't win a Conn Smythe in either Cup win and being Slovenian has limited his international exposure. The Selke is his only major award and it just isn't that sexy.

Now, playing until he is 40 at a high level could change that but Kopitar is Kopitar: a hockey machine that just routinely gets the job done with little fan fare. Do that on a marquee franchise and you'll get talked about but playing out here in LA really caps his notoriety.

Lady Byng is very upset with you right now.

I also believe he has one of these, unless his wife broke it.

If Kopitar isn’t remembered it’s because he spent his career in LA. Meanwhile, other less deserving players playing in hockey hotbeds will be continually brought up. I really don’t give a shit whether the fans across the league remember Kopi - he was instrumental in bringing two Cups here and led the team in scoring almost every year he’s played.

I know Dave Taylor is the "King of Kings", but both Brown and Kopitar have passed him in games played. Kopitar is 85 goals behind Taylor and is 69 points behind him with three years left on this current contract. The goals might not happen without an extension but the points should for sure. For what it's worth, Kopitar is #1 all-time for "Adjusted Points", whatever the hell that is.

Toss in the Cups and Kopitar will probably go down as the greatest King of all-time. Not the best since Gretzky is the best player the Kings have ever had, but he'll have 18 seasons and the highest games played mark for the Kings if he sees this contract through to the end. Hasn't scored below 60 points a season (paced for 60+ in 2013 and last year) while also only averaging less than 20 minutes of ice for one season out of 15 so far.

Dude is a hockey machine, plain and simple. I totally understand wanting more from him in a leadership/attitude point-of-view but it's kind of impossible to not like the guy and it is impossible/trolling to not respect his game.

Kopitar is might favorite King -- since his first game in a Kings' uniform. But he isn't even the best player on the current team and hasn't been for quite a while.

Drew Doughty is the best King -- AINEC. [MOD EDIT]
By what measure? He's got worse possession metrics, more favorable zone starts, worse +/- in most years, fewer awards.

Outside of like 2016, I have no idea how it's "not even close". Especially "for quite a while".

Simple, one is generational and the other isn't.

I think there is a better chance that Kopitar never plays for another team v. Drew. Forget getting into the "who is better/more important debate" : Kopitar will go down as the greatest King if he puts in 18+ years solely in a Kings sweater.
