Pretty much, you still have to take care of your superstar core.. either way, I don’t see the Avs winning a cup with how they built their team. They need more size and physicality on the blue line and they lack depth on the bottom 6

I think Landeskog is a star to all star player, not a superstar. Paying him in the $40M to $50M category would be money better spread around for what he can bring as an individual over the course of 6+ years.

Give Landeskog 7X8mil and then move Kempe and the #8overall and a prospect(a.Thomas, Fagemo) for a #2 defenseman…

Landeskog-Kopitar-Brown
Iafallo-Byfield-Arvidsson
Moore-JAD-Vilardi
Tkachov/MacD/Wagner-Lizotte-Grundstrom

Kaliyev and Turcotte called up during season

Anderson-Doughty
Werenski-Roy
Bjornfot-Walker
Strand
I dunno, give Landeskog a 7-year deal? When are we going to learn?

It looks like Colorado’s initial offer to Landeskog valued him at around $28M over 4 years. That’s my guess as to how they got to $41M over 8 years today, as rumored. It’s a pretty big step up from where Sakic started at the end of the 19/20 season, so less than a year ago.

Is Landeskog a guy who is worth more than $41M? His agent must think he can find a GM who thinks that way on the open market. I think Sakic would be smart to make his best and final offer ASAP and walk away if that’s rejected.
Then Sakic got it about right in his initial offer.

A wild Dean Lombardi appears!!!

You don't like Landeskog or Kubalik? They are top flight wingers and on the Kings it would be a welcome additions after having to endure the likes of Yafallo and Brown all these years, good god man!

Now, Andy, did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?

I would expect nothing less from Dean Lombardi. He is a smart man.

DL said that he was too loyal to the players after the second cup. And he’d be more mercenary in hindsight, but not to the Belicheck level. One of his excuses was his experience in SJ made him over cautious about not giving players big contracts. And with the cup wins, that is a hard sell to the org / fans.

I think in retrospect, he may regret the contracts he gave to Gaborik, Brown and possibly Quick the most. And I wonder if he regrets not finding a way to remove Sutter from behind the bench after the 2014/15 season.

I doubt the Brown or Quick contracts. One, he had no choice because Quick came off an absolutely epic season after winning the Conn Smythe, finishing second in the Vezina (and should have won if not for East Coasters), and Brown just captained the team to its second cup in three years. Two, the cap hits weren't really awful either. Brown only stands out because of the three seasons afterwards. Three of the last four seasons though he's produced enough to earn it.

I bet he's more talking about things like Richards and the Lucic/Sekera deals and holding onto guys like Stoll and/or Williams when it was clear they needed to move towards a rebuild instead of chasing something they weren't close to.

It’s pretty obvious that Landeskog’s camp is just putting pressure on Colorado to increase their offers and I find it hard to believe he would just abandon a burgeoning cup contender while he is captain for a bit of money, it isn’t chump change but it is a discount a lot of players take in the end to try to win.

However, I have to admit that he both interests and scares me the most out of all the UFA and trade bait players being talked about this offseason. He is the one that would be overpaid for the most for “intangibles” and would be the most questionable on durability and longevity, but he is also the one that I think would have the most impact in the short term.

He would be the player I would want on the Kings the most, but the contract that it would take could sink the rebuild before it is even done and I actually fear that Blake would be willing to give it to him.

Dean deserves another job, especially when you compare his proven results to some of the jokers currently running teams now like Benning and Fletcher. But I can see him not wanting to take any random position just to have a job. It's a difficult learning experience making those mistakes but he's a much smarter person for it and the acknowledgment and self-reflection is important. The revisionist history is frustrating, seems like the hockey media only talks about his last couple years and completely ignore the few years leading up to the 3 year run and the 3 year run.

Giving Brown and Quick new contracts were no brainers, especially after the cup wins. Its the non buyout of Richards , the Gaborik deal and refusing to remove Sutter out of loyalty are his biggest blunders [not including trades]. Sutter started losing the team, and DL refused to acknowledge it.

There were a few trades that ended up requiring a rebuild:

- Lucic deal: lost the Barzal/Connor pick, Collin Miller, Jones. If this team has Barzal, do we ever need a rebuild? Not to mention 2 other good assets just wasted.

- Bishop deal: Cernak was the Voynov replacement all along (and then some). Woops. Doughty and Cernak on the ice for most of the game? Plus Roy?

- Sekera deal: another 1st rounder wasted

yeah, the first 4 years would be good, but the rest of the deal might hurt in the long run as the kids start getting their 2nd contracts. That is, if he's looking for 6 plus years. who know, by then so much money will be off the cap, it may not really matter.

Lucic trade wasn't good, but I was very excited when it happened and he was a beast. Kings need the energy he brought on this current roster. The ultimate teammate you want to go to war with.

The Bishop trade was a total disaster and probably the strangest one all things considered.

Sekera trade had strong potential until he got injured. The hockey gods basically said the party is over. I remember most of us really liking the deal myself included.

yeah, I was only going off his front office moves, and wasn't including any of the trade. His trades got worse as the cup years went past us. He had cup fever and made really bad decisions for sure as you pointed out..
