It’s pretty obvious that Landeskog’s camp is just putting pressure on Colorado to increase their offers and I find it hard to believe he would just abandon a burgeoning cup contender while he is captain for a bit of money, it isn’t chump change but it is a discount a lot of players take in the end to try to win.

However, I have to admit that he both interests and scares me the most out of all the UFA and trade bait players being talked about this offseason. He is the one that would be overpaid for the most for “intangibles” and would be the most questionable on durability and longevity, but he is also the one that I think would have the most impact in the short term.

He would be the player I would want on the Kings the most, but the contract that it would take could sink the rebuild before it is even done and I actually fear that Blake would be willing to give it to him.
He's going to sign a 50+ million dollar contract. At least 10 million dollar difference is beyond significant.

No real surprises, but, you know, content:

I am a bit surprised to see Brown's name on the protected list - altruistic sentiment aside, the logic of exposing (a superior version, even, of) him 4 years ago and yet protecting him now doesn't inherently make sense to me. "Somebody has to score goals for this team" - right; why not take a chance that one of the kids can fill that role? You might even get some decent two-way play out of the newbie!

OTOH, they theoretically had better players to protect during the Vegas draft (and Brown's contract had quite a bit more term left at that point), so maybe that's the reason. And looking at the exposed list, it's not like they're (probably) looking at losing the next Luc Robataille (although I still haven't completely given up on Grundstrom, but I just don't think it's going to happen with the Kings). Lastly, they COULD be hoping to use Brown as trade bait to a contender at the deadline - although if he starts this season the way he finished the last one, that's probably a pipe-dream...

Lucic trade wasn't good, but I was very excited when it happened and he was a beast. Kings need the energy he brought on this current roster. The ultimate teammate you want to go to war with.

The Bishop trade was a total disaster and probably the strangest one all things considered.

Sekera trade had strong potential until he got injured. The hockey gods basically said the party is over. I remember most of us really liking the deal myself included.

Lucic deal was just flat out bad asset management, made even worse when Boston flipped Jones for a 1st to SJ , this after DL specifically told them not to do it. Jones continues to kick the Kings in the nuts year after year because of this deal.

I like Brown and have little faith in Grundstrom or AA. But I just seems like bad asset management to protect a 36 year old with one year left over younger players. Just seems like a bad move, and I want Brown to retire a King.

If it's any consolation Jones only broke into the league because of the Kings and pretty much stays in the league only because of his performances against the Kings...making San Jose fully black hole and give up Stutzle etc. So I can't be too mad at his ridiculous vengeance!

The only way I can wrap my head around it is that they are hoping Seattle prefers Grundstrom or AA over Clague.

Because otherwise I don't know why we wouldn't qualify AA like Hoven claims. If he doesn't fit into the plans for next season there's no reason why you wouldn't qualify him and then try to shop him after the expansion draft once teams no longer have to worry about protecting players. He's certainly got at least mid-round pick trade value.

He made the Kings look like chumps in the 2016 playoffs, almost winning the cup for SJ thanks to that one ego driven trade. While I don't mind his vengeance as a competitor, the fallout from one single move continues to effect the Kings. Jones and the Sharks banked 12 points and he got 2 assists last year! We finally broke him in the last game, but I think it had more to do of him not giving a shit than the Kings effort.

Yep, its a nice try by Blake but probably won't work.

Giving Brown and Quick new contracts were no brainers, especially after the cup wins. Its the non buyout of Richards , the Gaborik deal and refusing to remove Sutter out of loyalty are his biggest blunders [not including trades]. Sutter started losing the team, and DL refused to acknowledge it.
Have to agree. However, with Richards he wanted to believe that he’d resolved his issues and if he had resolved them it may have worked out differently. His subsequent issues at the border obviously paint a different picture. I wanted Richards to be OK like most of us and I certainly allowed emotion to cloud my judgement but that’s OK because it’s not my job. It was probably his worst mistake but probably also the most understandable one.

He had to try to sign Gaborik because heading into the final he had a strong case for the Conn Smythe. So he rightly went for it and unfortunately it was too high a cap hit for waaaay too long. The speed the Gaborik camp agreed to the package offered showed what a good offer it was. I loved DL but like the team he peaked in 2014. I hope he gets another GM gig, out east.

Not necessarily. The guy went from a potential star to a flop in Edmonton to signing a $1.2 one year deal as a UFA.

I think there is a book out on Athanasiou, and it isn't positive. Last year was his reclamation time, but it didn't go very well. Lots of things to like in his game, but there is something there that casts him in less than positive light.

I actually think the Gaborik deal was very defensible, that was a sign DL knew time was limited and gave term to keep the cap hit down. Unfortunately Gabby's injury history returned, but if he stays healthyish for another two years, no one says a word. Keep in mind he popped in a 27 goal season even pretty hobbled. That's great value.

It just looks like a shit sandwich because the volume of mediocre-to-bad deals because insurmountable, we crossed the event horizon.

Yup. It wasn't the Gaborik deal by itself, it was the several before that too.

Any interest in Boeser? Doubt they’d trade him in the division, but Benning has screwed up his cap enough that he’s apparently available. He definitely fits in the age range we need more contributors in.

Also helped SJ jump us in the draft.

Yep. 27 goals in 2015. He definitely did his part that season. Takes that knee-on-knee the next season and it is all downhill from there.

No issue with the contract. You're bringing back the band for another run and Gaborik did his part. That team wasn't supposed to lose Voynov either. Again, the miss heading into 2015 was not buying out Richards.

Totally agree, that buyout would have possibly allowed us to bring back Mitchell, or even offer Iginla the contract Colorado gave him.
