Disclaimer: Not saying we should target any of these.

Are there any top 6 or former top 6 players that are going to be left unprotected? Guys like Tarasenko & Duchene.

Duchene and Johansen won't be protected by Nashville

I'm loving the Cloutier photos guys but I gotta tell you.. it needs more beach ball

One of my favorite memories of Cloutier here was a game against Nashville where he threw a fit and tried to go after Scott Hartnell.

still pisses me off. Especially his extension before playing a single friggin game

His extension, especially just coming off surgery, followed by McCaully's 4 year contract after surgery too. I can't think of a single game he played in.

to be fair, we practically also traded for Doughty and Hickey when we got Cloutier.

Was going to say the same. Crawford + Cloutier = Doughty. Goes to show you that along with genius moves (Williams, Carter, Stoll, Greene), it also takes dumb luck to build the right team. We get Luongo, we probably don't get Doughty and maybe never realize what Quick is.

You know, one thing that has never sat right with me is the whole "playoffs or bust" narrative, while at the same time saying they may not get the defenseman this summer, which is fine, but they aren't making the playoffs without the defenseman.

Looking at the Pac at the moment, it's not an impossibility to make the playoffs without getting this mythological defenseman.

Being a real team with any aspirations, sure, that's different.

Anybody else look at Carolina and see a potential pre-expansion trade partner?

They are probably protecting 4 defenseman (Slavin, Skjei, Pesce and Bean), leaving 4 Forwards (Aho, Staal (NMC), Teuvo and Svechnikov).

This would leave Nino & Trocheck exposed, take out one if you think Staal would waive his NMC, I personally don't.

I don't get it either. I've attended a couple of Season Ticketholder meetings and they've been very transparent. It was always this current off-season which would be the spending/move-making one. Due to expiring contracts and expansion that this window would be the start. Last season the hope was the team would be playing important games late in the season. There was never talk about playoffs. That was straight from Luc and Blake's mouths.

What nobody could have foreseen was COVID and realigning to be competing with 2 of the best teams in the league in Vegas/Colorado and up and coming Minnesota and recent Champs in St Louis in the division. The team was actually surprisingly competitive with the Wild and Blues but got absolutely smoked by Colorado and Vegas. Yes TMc said make the playoffs last season, but what else is he going to tell the room? Anyway, the new division gives the Kings a shot with minor tweaks.

Wasn't Cloutier a really good fighter for a goalie? Or am I mixing him up with someone

He was feisty and built a rep for fighting due to beating the crap out of, I think, Tommy Salo during a line brawl.

I do believe that was a big part of Lombardi signing him: he just drafted Bernier but wanted a veteran to hold the fort for a couple of years. He knew Cloutier wasn't going to be amazing but the character side of it was a big part of the draw. Turns out his play was even worse than expected and the character thing didn't translate either. Pretty disastrous signing but, then again, he helped them lose games which was important at the time. He was very good at that.

Didn't he essentially (eventually) get ostracized from the team, and after he left, ended up suing (or at least, filed a formal grievance against) the Kings organization? Yeeesh. OTOH, I didn't ever have high hopes for this guy - besides what I saw of his previous playoff chokes, a friend of mine was a big-time Canucks fan (good guy despite this; very knowledgeable), and he wouldn't shut up about how thrilled he was when the trade went down (i.e., Cloutier was off that team) - that's when I knew it probably wasn't going to work out...

Wasnt he upset claiming the Kings set him up at a motel 6 of some subpar motel?

"At the time, the injury was still believed to be minor and Cloutier volunteered to continue playing in lieu of backup Mathieu Garon also being sidelined with a broken finger. When the pain in his hip quickly got worse, Cloutier appealed to team management. He saw a specialist who diagnosed him with a torn hip labrum and told him the injury could put his career in jeopardy. He was subsequently flown to Colorado for surgery on January 12, 2007. Cloutier remained in Colorado for ongoing treatment and was lodged by the organization in a motel 31 miles away from the clinic. The Kings’ original insistence that he play and his subsequent lodging proved to be a contentious issue for Cloutier."

Yeah, that rings a bell - that must've snowballed into this:

Dan Cloutier | Los Angeles Kings Blog (insidesocal.com)

I finally got some more definitive word about the Dan Cloutier situation. For those who haven’t been following closely, the Kings bought about Cloutier’s contract but Cloutier filed a grievance, basically alleging that he’s injured and therefore should have the buyout voided. According to the Kings, the league has agreed that Cloutier’s buyout should stand. Officially, Cloutier is considered bought out. His $1.033 million for this season will count against the salary cap. At some point, an arbitrator is expected to address the issue, but that could take weeks or perhaps months.

Just makes me appreciate Jonathan Quick all that much more...

I maintain that Lombardi acquired Cloutier to purposefully finish low in the standings for a couple of years!!!

:biglaugh:

If you asked me if that happened, I would've had no recollection of it. So long ago, in a very forgettable time.

But yeah, so the Richards buyout fiasco wasn't DL's first rodeo.
