If we went with the one most deserving I think it has to go to Kaliyev. He has been really showing that he is ready to step up. If they are looking at merit he is the no-brainer answer.

If we went with who the Kings need the most I think the answer is Turcotte. They need a lot more heart and a spark right now to get going and at least finish the year strong. That matters. It was only last season we saw them put together that win streak and find success at the end and that little bit of success at the end of last season literally flowed until like a handful of games this year...

The play I would be most interested to see up with the Kings though is Thomas. He is the one I am wondering about the most assessment-wise. He is a player that I am skeptical of more even though I am one of his bigger fans. I think he has a skill set that is best suited for the top 6, but I question if he has the ability and the upside to stick there.
Yeah Kaliyev got his cup, would be good to get one of the other kids a taste so they can be motivated in the gym this summer.

I’d call up Turcotte just to see how he does. On if he’d be a trade chip in the offseason. Because teams won’t take Vilardi due to back issues, and Kings won’t trade Byfield because he’s a unicorn. Short on wingers that might make an impact so can’t trade Kaliyev, which process of elimination is Turcotte. But if he plays well, then keep him and roll with what you got.

I don’t think there are enough games left to get any kind of real read on any of the kids with the Reign. I think Frk is a guy who should finish the year with the Kings. He seems healthy and he was scoring goals in the AHL. The guy got a two year, one way deal. So let’s see if he is the guy we thought we were getting when that decision was made. Other than Todd being stubborn about giving him minutes, he should be able to slot back onto Vilardi’s wing at some point.

i've actually been a bit curious about the frk situation lately. i guess somehow i missed the notification that he was waived and cleared a month or so ago, so i assumed he was still on IR but then i saw a highlight of him scoring a goal in ontario.. i guess maybe it's just a holding pattern to keep him healthy until camp? i just would've thought he'd be up before luff, yknow? at least on the taxi squad?

1 more than Turcotte & Thomas have. Call it a squirt for all I care. The point is giving them a taste of what NHL competition is like. Yes, even if their teammates are shit. If that rubs off on a kid after 5 games, that kid has bigger problems.

Exactly. Prepare them for next season by showing them what the competition is like at the NHL level.

Obviously things have been odd. Short seasons everywhere. Weird schedules. This season isn't done yet. They can still lose many times.

Does it matter if they've so far improved their regulation record the last 3 years when they're still a bottom of the league level team? More regulation wins per GP. Most of that came in that one winning streak this year, but we don't seem to worry too much about details when giving DL credit for the team "improving" every year in those early seasons. Easy now to look back then and see things leading somewhere. Obviously there was a great plan in place. Never panic time. It all unfolded beautifully, with DL conducting the orchestra with a master touch. A sprinkle of this here, a sprinkle of that there, and it was inevitable.

I think the difference in this season v. 2009 is that you could see the pieces that gave you hope for years to come in Doughty/Kopitar/Quick etc. I mean, having an 18 year old defenseman come in and play like Doughty did is just super exciting. You at least could see legit #1C and #1D and maybe we have a goalie too. Hell, Wayne Simmonds was more exciting than any of the prospects this season relative to expectations. This team still has no clarity in regards to its center or defense prospects being elite. We think Petersen is good but he's 26 v. Quick's 23 during the 2009 season.

The slight improvement this season is on the backs of the vets mostly so it would be like if 2009 was due solely to Frolov and Derek Armstrong. That said, I think the big thing for me is that they looked like a real hockey team for the first 15-20 games but have looked horrible far too often since then so it feels like a step back right now. It isn't even about winning. T-Mac is right when he compares them to an AYSO soccer game full of five year olds just chasing the ball around.

Which is why the contexts of DL and Blake are different. DL even lucked out that Demitra only signed a 3 year contract. Made him a lot easier to trade while he was still productive with 2 years left.

Was reading the Athletic, and realized that next season the pacific is Vegas, Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, Vancouver, San Jose, Anaheim, LA.
We could see 6 mediocre teams fighting for 3rd place.

yup will be a very easy division.
Vegas will be good, Edmonton will always be hard with Leon and McDavid, Calgary should be better than this year but not world beaters, same with Vancouver, San Jose will be worse, and Anaheim is still early on their rebuild.

Just wondering, were there any moves Dean made which you liked where there wasn't luck involved?

I think next year the tiers look more like:

Vegas
Edmonton

Calgary
Vancouver

San Jose
Kings
Anaheim
Seattle

I kind of hope the Kings lose out. Nothing left to play for except a better draft pick. If they lose tonight, I believe they're eliminated from playoff contention.

I think Vancouver bounces back. They've had a Kings 2015 season this year.

Calgary though is done. I just hope not done enough for Wright or Bedard.

Calgary's top pick ever is #4. I would be ok with them getting a #1 pick. Also because everyone in Calgary has had to watch Edmonton draft #1 picks for years.
