I think our glut of dmen over the last few years has skewed our perception of what a “top 4” and a “top 6” guy is. Justin Faulk being consider a “4D” by some people here is good evidence of that.

TVR would not be out of place on a second pairing. He wouldn’t be a world beater, but wouldn’t look out of place. That is a definition 4D right there IMO.

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion, but I just do not see TvR as top-4 material. Like, at all...not even as a temporary fill-in.

There's no doubt that a lot of things would have to go sideways for TvR to be in *our* top four anytime soon. But, I think you're looking at this through a Hurricanes lens, because it's not just Winnipeg that would be better with TvR in their top four. Vegas is one of the elite teams in the league with Schmidt, Theodore, McNabb, Holden as their top four. St. Louis won the Cup and they'd take TvR over Edmundson every day of the week as a No. 4 d-man.

He's a UFA after this season and I think you will be shocked at what happens with that, if he's not resigned here before then. I know we have Priskie, et al., but they're going to have to outplay TvR and I don't think that's automatic.

...and ain't that weird as hell for us who've been through the lean years?

Ok, I'll concede that my lens is distorted due to the defensemen the Hurricanes have thrown out there in the past few years.

Looking around the league, TVR could be a #1 RHD in some places (cough Winnipeg cough)

These two statements are neither inaccurate nor contradictory.

Though I do think he can be a #4 in a pinch with a high level partner, just not long term. Hell Jamie McBain was at one point next to Pitkanen and actually playing like an actual nhler.

05-06 was the way it was because of our forwards, NOT our defense. Faulk today would've been easily been on our 1st pair back then.
Apparently you failed to understand the failure in logic that I called out.

Considering Faulk as our #1D, how is 05-06 any different than 02-03 and 03-04?

hedican was a lot better in 05-06 than 03-04 imo. i think the year off helped him a lot

also i disagree about faulk being our best d in 13-14. sekera was easily better than him that year.

You missed the point of the exercise. We're talking about right now Justin Faulk being placed on those teams. Not 18-year-old Justin Faulk or whatever.

And Bret Hedican was a lot of things in his career, but he was never a first-pairing d-man.

31 Thoughts: Byfuglien decision will have major ripple effect - Sportsnet.ca

From Friedman's 31 thoughts. #13:
"Teams trying to move bodies include Carolina and Vancouver. Both are tight to the cap and roster limits. The Canucks have made four or five players available, but I’m not sure Virtanen is one of them. Head coach Travis Green was frustrated with Goldobin last season, but GM Jim Benning opted for a longer view. Could be the same here. Calgary may have to manoeuvre something once Matthew Tkachuk is signed."

Wonder who all is included in bodies.

Reimer probably. I can't imagine they're too excited about paying Forsberg 775k to presumably be an AHL backup. The bodies on the blueline are starting to pile up. Unlikely, but maybe McKeown could bring back an asset or even a proven AHL scorer to strengthen the forward group in Charlotte. Forsling could serve that same purpose.

Most likely Charlotte is Kuokkanen, Gauthier, Geekie, Gibbons, Luostarinen, Lorentz, Mattheos (once he is back), Smallman, Pritchard, McCormick, and Bishop. That is almost as strong as last season.
Though I am all for getting more assets if one of our D depth is traded.
