I was really hoping McLellan would move him to wing this year along side Kopitar and Brown.

I want to say yes to this but seeing how this would led to Kempe centering a line i'd go with Carter at 2C one more time to see what he has left...
Kopitar
Carter
Amadio
M.Kempe

Would be how i'd go down the middle...

I wonder who put together the lines for today, Blake/TM/assistants? I also wonder if they'll change for tomorrow.

Joakim Ryan with Doughty is....something.

Ryan did play a decent chunk of time with Burns last season and his fancy stats were fairly decent. He slightly elevated Burns possession, expected goals for when you look at their WOWY.
Contrast that to Forbort who dragged Doughty down across the board by a significant margin.

Iafallo still on the top line on day 1. Ugh. I like the kid but come on.

What's the alternative? I don't know if Kopitar has any desire to play with Kovalchuk at ES. You never know what he's going to do. For a pretty systemic and methodical player like Kopitar, it doesn't fit. It didn't fit last year on a game to game basis. Grundstrom is 21, and played in some meaningless games last year. Iafallo isn't a 1st line player, but for the time being, he's a warm body that works with Kopitar's game. Iafallo plays a simple game. He'll dump the puck when he has to. He'll do what the coach asks. He's not big, but he'll give the effort along the boards.

I think he's missing a year. Nice to hear, but hopefully he doesn't try to do too much again. He's got very little help on defense, which is probably going to make him try too hard, but hopefully the coaches also don't feel forced to play him a ton. Everyone involved has to get that this is one of the worst defensive units in the league, and nobody should do anything crazy. Save Doughty for future years, when hopefully he starts getting some more help.

I agree with the 'trying to do too much thing,' but it was even more apparent last year because the opponent was actively isolating Forbort all over the ice. Coming in on offense? Dump soft to Forbort, cover Doughty. Have the puck in the ozone? Flood forbort's side. In the defensive zone? Double team Drew. Neutral zone? Attack Drew, let Derek carry. You can tell he just started getting annoyed and roved around to get involved any way he could.

I'm hopeful Bjornfot or Anderson or someone two-way useful can take over there as soon as possible but also hope they develop so they aren't just deferential to Drew. Muzzin was fantastic at this.

Muzzin had some talent. That was the biggest reason they lived with all the mistakes in 2013. Plus they lost 2 or 3 defenseman for most of that half season, but the talent was obviously there. I think only talent will make Doughty respect anyone at this point. The Cup crew, they're peers of Doughty, so that's different. Could be wrong, but from the outside, from what we've seen Doughty do, he doesn't seem like that teacher type. Could be wrong, probably wrong, but it seems like he's closer to that Kobe level of, say, arrogance than not. Doughty has the talent to be that, he can pull that off to some degree, but in terms of connecting with the next wave, I think game will only recognize game. They still haven't replaced Voynov 5 years later, and now they also have to replace Muzzin. Of course they also haven't been able to replace Greene, Mitchell, Regehr, or Scuderi either. They're going to lose Martinez soon too.

Until they figure out the defense, and give Doughty some help again, he's probably going to be frustrated come every April. I'm sure he feels like he should've been part of more than 1 playoff win in 5 years. All expectations are at rock bottom, management has not invested in this team, but hope spring eternal at this time of year, and hopefully Doughty is realistic during the coming struggles.

Iafallo on the top line reminds me of the types of players coaches would flank on Gretzky's left side, like Igor Liba, Mikko Makela, Warren Rychel, Dan Currie, Randy Burridge, etc.

Maybe Kovalchuk is better off not playing on the top line, seeing how Kopitar constantly deferred to him. I'm interested in seeing how a combo of Kovalchuk and Kempe will click.
