The D is so loaded those cuts are gonna be tough...we’ve already left good guys home.

I know I’m the only one but I still like Kemp.

Joe Cecconi was unsung hero in 2017. Especially in the final if i remember correctly. Maybe Kemp will be able to be that player this year. On the other hand, Cecconi had/has a lot more offensive upside than Kemp.

USAH has done well taking defensive defenseman (Cecconi, John Ramage, Patrick Sieloff, Brian Lashoff, etc.) that all played really well in helping USAH win medals. So, I get the appeal of Kemp for USAH. I don't want Kemp to make it, but it's not because he's a bad player. It's just what he brings isn't really needed on this team. Cecconi is a good comparable of what you'd hope of Kemp in this tournament if he does make it.

I just hope USAH isn't forcing a defensive defenseman on the team because they love the idea of it and not because it's the best option for this team. USAH is notorious for forcing a square peg in a round hole. Some years it's the right choice and others it's not.

For example, take the 2017 team when Cecconi made it. It wasn't a deep defensive group as Werenski and Hanifin were in the NHL. They only had 8 d-men at the preliminary camp and they had 3 small, offensive defensemen make the team (Ahcan, Fox, Fitzgerald). It was expected to be a group that played their top 4 a ton and it was true: it felt like McAvoy and Jones never left the ice. In that type of year - 3 small, offensive defensemen and spot minutes for the bottom 3 - a defensive defenseman role is a great choice. It's the perfect, simple role for spot minutes: stay-at-home, play simple, play physical, play the PK. Cecconi played that role really well, saw his minutes increase when Lindren missed time with illness (his next closest stylistic comparable), and played well in that increased role.

Contrast that with this year's group. There's only 1 defenseman under 6'0 (Q. Hughes) and he's one of the most dynamic players in the tournament. There's a ton of size in this group and a lot of two-way defenseman as well. It's a deep group that would rely on their top 4 by choice not necessity if they do so. And if you'd say Kemp has direct competition for a shutdown role, it's probably Samuelsson, a player that's bigger, just as good defensively, and much better offensively. Not that it's a Kemp vs. Samuelsson battle, as I could just as likely see them take Kemp over Emberson for example.

Kemp is good at what he does well and if he makes it, I hope he plays just as well as guys like Cecconi did before him. I just don't think it's a role that's needed this type of year.

Has anyone happened to see calculations how many NHL draft picks teams have from different rounds? (difficult sentence in English, I mean like team X has 12 players from the first round 4 from the second etc). I will calculate tomorrow these stats from eliteprospects looking players one by one if there's not this statistic already.

I have the feeling this is going to be a different "brand" of USA Hockey with JV as new GM.

IQ
Skill
Speed

I don't think that there is going to be spots for "slotted players" like shutdown D, PKer's or PP specialist ( Wisnewski in Olympics )

Fun Fact: Mike Hastings' current roster at Minnesota State doesn't have a single player under the age of 21.

Well year before then he was left off
he was left off, it was a snub but not a massive one...US had a lot of smaller skilled players that year that didn't make it either...

I would be curious if someone knew who the last kid directly out of the QMJHL that made team USA at the WJC was???

I for the life of me can't think of him...I don't remember Yandle making team USA...maybe he did..or...Ryan Bourque comes to mind, I think he might be the last kid from the Q to make a team USA squad..he obviously had USNDP roots so not a shock, but just very few kids from the Q ever get called to play here. Charlie Coyle probably did as well once he left BU...so Bourque and Coyle from like 7 years ago sound about right?? maybe I am missing a glaring name here....anyone?

Old news!!! He apologized, Daley forgave him.. move on, everyone else has!

Why anyone would even come close to considering using the word in any context, let alone that one, is beyond me. That this guy is now in a position of power with Hockey USA is really demonstrative of the mindset in the country in general.
