Leaving some of the more gifted offensive defensemen at home sure puts a lot of pressure and focus on the forward group...
And there are some legitimate questions heading into the tournament up front. Starting with the kid - Jack Hughes. I mean, he's unbelievable at times, but he's still just 17 - can he really be among the best Fs in the field while two-years younger than most...? Is that a fair expectation? They need it to happen...
They're not only asking him to deliver the goods - but, very likely, they're also counting on/hoping that he will jumpstart the season's for both Farabee and Wahlstrom (who are both still underagers themselves)...
Those two join O'Brien as high-end types underachieving (for various reasons) this year. The US needs them to deliver. Period. Can they turn it around?
As to your first group - what will Barrett look like outside of the PSU offense? All they do is run and gun - how much is that style a factor in his offensive output? Norris will need to take a huge step from last year's tournament to this one if he's playing a top scoring role...
What's the deal with Poehling? After last year's tournament he caught a lot of grief - but I argued he'd be a terror this year as a third year player. He's been good at SCSU, but not great - despite playing with Robbie Jackson a lot. I thought I'd feel much better about him offensively heading into this tournament. Perhaps playing in his age group for the first time in years will do the trick? Will he deliver? I'll be disappointed if he limits himself to a lesser role. If he could turn a third line into a real threat that would be huge...
Could all these questions fall USAs way? Sure could. But, I think they're legitimate concerns made more so by leaving some top puck-movers at home...
At least they have plenty of time to tune it up before they match up with Swe/Fin in the games that matter most...
