Waaaaay over there
I had some high hopes for him, but I gotta say, I'm pretty disappointed by Keppen's season so far... but I will admit I'm just stat watching.

Anyone here actually seen any of his games or able to give some context for what appears to be some serious regression on his part?

Anyone here actually seen any of his games or able to give some context for what appears to be some serious regression on his part?

I've seen little of him but one of the things that's happened is a skilled Russian import has taken his place on the top line with Dellandrea and he's been bumped down the roster as a result relative to the minutes he was getting when he was producing in the back half of last season. No longer on the top PP unit either.

A prospect pool consisting of Podkolzin, Hoglander, Madden, Dipietro, Utanen, and Rafferty is ugly apparently.

Don’t worry though. If and when our prospect pool improves in the eyes of some, the narrative will evolve to, “well that’s what happens when your NHL team sucks for many years. You naturally get good prospects!”

So what. Many teams have prospect pools that are equal to ours, if not better.

Only Hoglander and Madden have impressed and increased their stock from the position they were drafted. And they are both undersized so it’s no slam dunk they can make it to the NHL.

I wouldn’t call our pool ugly, but it’s pretty meh tbh

McDonough 1 goal (8th), -1

Yessiree....After 20 games, Tyler Madden now third in NCAA Div. I scoring race with 29 points and his 15 goals have him tied for the lead in all of college hockey. Basically carrying Northeastern on his back, night after night.

With a strong second half, could he receive Hoby Baker consideration? Don't see how the Canucks don't at least try to sign him this spring when his college season comes to an end. Could we see him play a few games for the Canucks in March or April, like Boeser, Hughes, Rafferty and Teves before him?

As a general rule I don’t think prospect pool rankings are all that important as they punish teams who have young players already playing in the NHL and reward teams who have players that haven’t graduated yet. A ranking of players 21 and under is more important and it shows a teams overall strength of young players.
Nonetheless I did a quick search of prospect pool rankings and the Canucks were generally around number 4-8 or so in the off season rankings but that included Hughes and Demko. Demko may still qualify. We’re probably still in the top 15 with Hughes gone. Here’s Last Word on Hockey ranking as an example. Note they were really high on Podzolkin which may have impacted their ranking and they also liked Juolevi which makes the ranking a little suspect but it gives a flavour of the rankings.

5.) Vancouver Canucks

Quinn Hughes is one of the best skating prospects in the world. He should make an immediate impact on the Canucks blueline. Olli Juolevi, Jett Woo and Guillaume Brisebois should not be far behind. Vasili Podkolzin was third in our draft rankings. The fact that he has a two-year commitment in the KHL dropped him down on draft days, but the Canucks may have a steal here. Nils Hoglander and Tyler Madden provide support upfront. The lack of a top-six centre prospect is the main flaw in the system (although it is mitigated by Elias Pettersson, who is considered graduated and does not factor into this ranking). Few teams have as good a one-two punch in goal as the Canucks with Michael DiPietro and Thatcher Demko.

Pretty much just stop reading here.

People are stating in this thread that our "prospect" pool is still fantastic, even with the graduation of Hughes.

No, it's really not. We probably only have 2-3 NHL level players in Dipietro/ Madden/Podkolzin, maybe Hoglander. But they're still far away and require much more seasoning.

But Juolevi is basically a write off at this point if he can't even crack the roster in his D+4 year at such a high pick.

Utunen is good defensively, but he's offensively anemic and even 3rd pairing defenseman at the NHL level had at least some semblance of offensive ability at the lower league levels.

Brisebois is in his D+4 and still isn't look all that good even at the NHL level.

Rafferty better look "decent" at the AHL level. It's his D+6 season right now.

We basically have no replacement for our defensive corps with Hughes graduating. There is no one that can replace the ability of Edler/Tanev/Stecher right now, which is a scary, scary thought.

yes. it really is a great pool.

for example, we have a prospect like mcdonough who, as an ncaa rookie is still scoring ppg in january. his thread has not been bumped since november and only has 16 posts since july. there are not even any salty posts from tankers explaining why we should discount him as a prospect yet.

face it, there are so many good prospects that you guys are overwhelmed and can't keep up with thinking up reasons why they all suck.

At the current state of the Canucks, its OKAY to have a "meh" prospect pool.
We're coming OUT of a rebuilding phase. So we have already graduated our best prospects Hughes, Pettersson, Demko, Boeser ... we're essentially a playoff team (knock on wood) and on the upswing, so its nice to have a secondary batch of guys developing and getting ready to step in and supplement our young core.
Hoglander, Podkozlin, Madden, Woo, Diepietro. We'll probably hit on 2, maybe 3 of these guys... very niiiiiice

Gonna have to agree with @krutovsdonut here our prospect pool is pretty good with Madden, Podz, Dipietro, Hoglander, Rathbone, Rafferty, and even guys like Lindy, McDonaugh, Briesbois, Gad, Karlsson, etc

I think the criticism is that considering how bad we have been over the last 6 years we should have MORE prospects. Thats true and shows how poorly our management put together our prospects and future, tho that been said we do have some good prospects. If we wanna compare to other teams we are probably above avg imo, should be higher, but gotta recognize we do have some good prospects in comparison to other teams prospects

We have made some poor choices, but we have EP (Calder) Boeser Hughes who all graduated to the NHL early. Demko is looking great as well. Hughes may be a calder finalist. Hoglander was a big story at the world juniors. Funny how people say that Poddy should have been able to dominate the WJC and is not tracking great, but when we say Hoggy had a great tournament and looks close to NHL ready, they go its just a short tournament and doesn't really count.

And way to early to write off Juolevi.

My take - Hoglander Poddy Diepietro and probably Juolevi are going to get at least a full year in the NHL at some point. We have Madden, Woo, Rathbone, Lind as legitimate prospects where I hope we get games out of half of them. And 4 or 5 more that are decent long shots, like MeEwan and Gadjovich.
