Don't write off Podkolzin.

Since Tarasenko, every single Russian(playing in Russia) 1st rounder has come over in 2 to 4 years. Most came over 2 to 3 years. Kuznetsov took 4 years, ya think the Caps care much now?

Rangers pick Kravstov got a taste for North America after our draft last season, kid can't wait to be a Ranger.

Just saying, don't count him out ;)

If Colorado doesn't draft in the first couple of spots, they may want to take a chance on Podkolzin. For everyone else in the top spots, we suck all suck badly and need our picks to work out for us with a minimum of risk, even if we're giving up some potential upside.

That's why the Kings probably need to at least know for sure that their pick is going to be under their control and be able to get their hands on him as soon as possible. This team is bad enough that they could give any of the Top 5 a shot sooner than later.

Don't tell that to most around here, they are mortified of Russians because a few 5th rounders haven't come over. Not to mention, they want immediate gratification, will be disappointed when their is a decent chance that only Kakko and Hughes are in the NHL come October.

Putting myself in Sakic's shoes, I might opt for the safer choice in Byram or Cozens/Dach. They used last year's top pick on RW Martin Kaut who already spent this season with the AHL club, so they might feel like they have RW covered for the time being with Rantanen/Kaut. They have Makar (and Timmins if he gets cleared) coming in the near future, but their long term left D is a little thin past Samuel Girard. Byram could fit right in as a possible future top pairing with Makar.

Totally agree, but it's understandably tough in the moment.

Maybe you missed this part of the Podkolzin thread:

- You could have been chosen by CHL , but did not, because you refused to go to Canada. Why?
- There is a type of people who simply do not have a desire to go there. I have friends who say: "Oh, America, Canada - this is very cool, I would like to live there all my life." I'm the opposite. I basically do not want to go there. Even more - play there. Because I understand that, most likely, I will lose more there than I'll acquire. Because I know very little language. And I know what kind of mentality there is, what kind of life. Because I was there in tournaments. And i don't have a desire to go there. To live alone in another country ... it's ok if you're in another city, as it's now, but at 17 years old in another country - I am not ready. I want to go there already as established hockey player and a man. With my family, probably. And now - it's too early for me.

He said he doesn't want to come here. At best, he wants to have a family first.

You're oversimplifying a legitimate concern about his lack of desire to play in North America. If he said "I want to play another year or two before going to the NHL" it's one thing. But this isn't a matter of when, but if.

Nope. In fact, I believe I was one of those asking to see that quote or something related. You're really reaching on what was a simple question regarding his lack of interest in playing Juniors over here. The question doesn't even ask whether he ever desires to play in the NHL.

"I don't want to play in America, Canada. I want to be a family man before I consider moving to North America."
"Oh, okay. Do you want to play in the NHL?"

Those journalists sure are lazy. Right?

See his quotes. It's not some unicorn made up concern.

I don't even need to go deep into Kings history to point out how just about literally every Russian we've drafted has either failed or bailed, save Frolov who was just enigmatic. I don't want us to even touch one with a first rounder for as long as I'm alive at this point. East coast--especially Rangers and Caps--seem to do well, as it's closer to home. West coast? Where are all the prominent Russian players?

Can you imagine Blake drafting Vilardi who never plays then Podolzkin who SAYS he doesn't want to come over yet?

You can mock everyone all you want but the evidence is over here slapping you silly.

It's probably not even going to come up, unless they lose one of these last two (because they aren't getting any help). Beyond that, i'm just saying it's not black & white (no pun intended).

EDIT: Just as I say that, Buffalo takes a 3-2 lead, hold onto your butts.

The odds are that if they do pass on Podkolzin, one of these guys will be a King:

Hughes
Kakko
Cozens
Dach
Turcotte
Byram

Wildcards could be Krebs or Zegras if they don't want a Dman.

Considering there is no pay-scale based on where you are drafting it could be smart for him if he ends up falling to a very good organization that wins and develops talent.

Who would want to be an Oiler, King, Senator, Duck or Sabre when you could end up in Pittsburgh, Tampa or Washington.

I think Bernstein said LA could try to trade for Hughes if they don’t pick first. Guess it would depend on who got the pick.

Buffalo beats Ottawa. Kings can't catch them now and Kings guaranteed no higher than 29th finish. Since they cannot drop more than 3, Kings will select between 1 and 6. NJ lost in Carolina, 3-1.
NJ had better lose their last one and Kings lose both, if NJ loses.
I won't put Podkolzin in here, as Kings will not select him - pretty much certain.

One of these should be a King:

Hughes
Kakko
Turcotte
Cozens
Byram
Zegras
Dach
Krebs
Boldy

That would probably be quite costly for the Kings. Not sure they can go all in on one guy unless it was moving their pick and maybe a guy like Toffoli. Even then, that's steep.

Boldy seems like he is sliding a bit. What are your thoughts on him? It seems like his offensive upside is huge but he didn't produce as highly as he should have considering the talent he was playing with and his skating is nothing to really tout as a big attribute.

It will be interesting if he drops out of the top 10 and a guy like maybe York, Soderstrom or Broberg moves up depending on if a team needs a Dman.

Correct me if I am wrong but from what I remember we always dropped since the draft lottery was introduced.

The new lottery (where the top 3 picks are lottery) was introduced in 2016. The Kings couldn't fall in 2016 or 2018 since they made the playoffs those years.

In 2017 they did fall from 10th to 11th.

Updated Bob McKenzie survey of scouts: https://www.tsn.ca/hughes-kakko-in-tight-race-for-top-spot-1.1284470

Interesting note as 10/10 scouts still had Hughes #1, but most conceded that it's a close race with Kakko now. Kakko also won't be at the U18s in a couple weeks since he was added to Finland's senior squad for the World Championships in May. Some scouts are bummed that they won't get one last head-to-head look between the Kakko/Hughes.

Eight of ten scouts had Podkolzin at #3, but they're obviously projecting on talent. GMs could audible depending on how a team feels about his KHL contract situation (my thought, not McKenzie's). Bob notes that there's a tight cluster in the next grouping with Cozens/Dach/Byram.
“They’re both really good players, probably not superstars,” another scout said. “Hughes could be Patrick Kane, but he might be Clayton Keller. Either way, a very good player. I don’t see Kakko as a superstar either. Very good player.”

I've had similar feelings watching them play. I don't think either player is going to be a huge difference maker. I hope I'm wrong, and I hope we draft one of them.
