It will be interesting to see how many smaller guys get taken high because of how the NHL has changed. There was just a big story in the Hockey News with Johnny Gaudreau on the cover talking about how guys like him and Debrincat are excelling due to the way the game is played now.

Cole Caulfield is one guy who will be interesting to watch. If he were 6'1, he could probably be a Top 10 pick because he has some of the best hands in the draft and all he does is score.

If the Kings don't get Hughes/Kakko, any thoughts on getting the top D Byram? He could be a 1B type next to Drew. You could end up having a really good top 4 in 2~3 years with Doughty, Byram, and if a couple of guys like Clague, Anderson, Brickley, Phillips, Strand develop. Build from the back end.

I still think scouts prefer skilled players of 6’0” ++ (5’11” at best), unless there is a Patrick Kane available.

The real midgets will be picked around spot 20 and later.

I think Turcotte belongs in that same group.

The build from the back end stuff is not going to fly with the way the game is being played now, especially with a top 5 pick, you simply can't pass up on elite skill with the way the league is going, especially for a team like the Kings who have such little skill at the NHL level and in the system.

In 2012 there were 3 defenseman taken in the top 5 picks.

Since then..

2013 - 1
2014- 1
2015- 1
2016- 1
2017- 2
2018- 1

I would be more on board with this if Vilardi wasn't such a question mark. That said LA's prospect pool is definately deeper at forward than on D. Wouldn't be the worst thing but would rather have Cozens or Dach in addition to Hughes and Kakko

Agreed, that second 1st is going to be a Dman most likely...
Maybe Toffoli + the second 1st to move up if someone they really like falls ??

Agree that Vilardi's situation may make it harder to go D with the first pick. And as Frolov said, I'd also add Turcotte, have a good feeling about him. But I do think they definitely need to take a D with one of their 1sts or their 2nd. Need more D prospects with higher upside.

well, another list (ISS) pushes Kaliyev right at the bottom of first round.
I hope we get at least the fourth pick; Hughes, Kakko, Byram or Turcotte are all great, at 5 I am not so sure

I think that it depends on the expectations for the others. It's not like the top 10 have holes in their games that just stick out. They all look like Top 6 quality players. A few of them are going to be Top 3 and All Stars. It's a crapshoot as usual but this year feels like there are fewer boom/bust types in the Top 10. I think the difference is what they do when they get into the system. People just can't get hung up on it being a Hughes/Kakko or bust draft. You are setting yourself up for disappointment if that's your endgame.

It also depends on who you talk to and when you talk to them when they are being evaluated. Turcotte seems to have vaulted into that Top 5 and Byram looks like a Top 2 Dman. The rest of the DMen in the first round seem a bit sketchy to me. I think that the unless you go all in on Byram, I wouldn't take a Dman until Round 2 guys like Honka, Broberg, Soderstrom, York, Sieder and Robertson are all in a group and nobody is really standing out. In any other draft, Byram could be a #2 or #3. This draft is just forward heavy.

If the Kings are drafting at 1/2 then it's simple stupid on who to take. At 3, I probably go Turcotte but Zegras, Krebs and Dach are all really good players. Boldy is another guy who nobody will feel sorry for the team if they get him. Cozens to me seems to be slipping down and I am just not sure what he is. You look at him and it screams #1 Center. The stats aren't backing it up though. It's rapidly changing when you stretch it out to the Top 15. Suzuki for instance is suddenly sliding down while Newhook seems to be a recent darling of some.

A few wildcards on where they will be picked are Kaliyev, Podkolzin and Caulfield.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see us either move one of those seconds with the late first to move up some picks and get another guy we really want, like Caulfield or one of the d-men, as someone is sure to fall.

At the moment, here's my draft wish list:
Hughes
Kakko
Turcotte
Krebs
Dach
Cozens
Byram

I hadn't read up much on Krebs...then read up and watched some video. Pretty impressed.

Cam Robinson - Dobber ProspectsFeb. 6th: "The supremely skilled forward is elusive and shifty with the puck. Takes creative lines to dangerous areas of the ice. The type of player that sees plays develop before those around him and uses that to exploit the opposition. Owns terrific puck skills. "

The Kootenay Ice are terrible...so his 67 points looks amazing, since the #2 on team has 50 pts and the #3 has only 39 ! Among some offensive stats I like: when a player crushes it without having decent linmates...and not needing the PP to pad points.

Kootenay Ice at eliteprospects.com

Krebs should go top 6 for sure. More upside than Dach, I am thinking.

Peyton Krebs | Peyton Krebs Profile | Peyton Krebs Scouting Report 2019

I think it is good to read up and watch everyone in the top echelon, not named Hughes or Kakko....so if the Kings get one of them, you'll be all the more happy, yet if they are like 4th and select Krebs and you go WTF?? you should be prepared. The Kings are going to get a PREMIUM TALENT.

You just witnessed what a solid prospect like Grundstrom can do...well, get ready for 2 or 3 more: Kupari, this #1 pick, and JAD for that matter. JAD is on fire with goals in 7 straight
and will be at a higher level, next time you see him. And he was not bad his first 5 games. 1 year makes a difference. He may not be elite, but could be the #3 center the Kings have needed
since Stoll. And Grundstrom is just getting warmed up. Don't be shocked if he scores 25 goals next year. NHL hands and shot. Knocking Ducks on their azz at will. 2 games into his NHL career.

GO KINGS! (have not seen or heard that in 2019 )

If we cant have Hughes or Kk then i would seriously consider Byram. Pair him with Doughty immediately. Sign Trouba in the offseason. Pair him with Martinez and eventually Clague.
