NHL used to do the lottery right after the regular season ended in early April when TSN had the rights, but now Sportsnet does it at the end of April. It's only a three week difference, but during that period, I always find myself starting a mock draft and realizing about ten picks in that it's a futile exercise without knowing the official order.

Kings are destined to pick 4th or 5th, fully expect Edmonton to pick 1OA.
I dunno, I think Patrick Ewing rules apply in the NHL draft as well, so that means either Chicago or Pittsburgh (if they fail to make the playoffs) get the #1 overall pick.

Edmonton?

Honestly though that franchise deserves shit. Right from the get go they took two teams and made 1 super team in the WHA NHL Merger. If that didn't happen they would not have had Gretzky and then they would not have the dynasty. Now in the last decade they keep on winning lotto's..f*** EDMONTON

There are solid options up to 5 IMO. I will be dissapointed if LA falls out of of top 5
Purely out of intrigue who do you consider the "top 5" as seems like outside of the top 2-3 it is quite wide open up to around ~10. You will find in no order Dach, Cozen, Turcotte, Byram, Zegras, Boldy, Krebs, and Kaliyev ranked from 3-15 pending the scouting service.

Those guys all are players that can help a team immensely. It's a crapshoot on position but there is a lot of talent especially in the Top 10.

Historically, when the odds are against them, Pittsburgh and Chicago move up the furthest in the draft lotteries. Remember when fours teams had an equal shot at Sidney Crosby in the lottery, and hockey was struggling in Pittsburgh?

Another well-publicized talent in Hughes is going to be the #1 overall. Does the NHL want him playing in LA, or do they want him playing in Pittsburgh with Sidney Crosby and Malkin? Or maybe in Chicago with Kane?

I know it seems a bit far-fetched, but let's see how the lottery turns out. Crosby and Malkin's run in Pittsburgh is coming to an end, and the NHL probably doesn't like it.

I really like Dach and Cozen.

ya the Crosby draft seemed to good to not be fixed. I love when Brian Burke talks about it.

The Kane draft was a huge win for Chicago.

Lotteries are meant to be random, just seems a little silly to try to find patterns. Things are different now than the Patrick Ewing days of pulling an envelope out of a bin. Doesn't require that much thought to come up with a conspiracy theory for every lottery team.

And it's easy to forget that Chicago was a big loser in the 2004 lottery when they dropped from 2 to 3 (aka Malkin to Cam Barker).

That's what I do!

JAD has a teammate Adam Beckman C 6-1 26g 24a in 56games. I haven't seen his names on too many Top lists. He may be a good target with their 3rd maybe. Numbers look pretty good, haven't seen him play.

He is ranked #44 among north american skaters. So probably will go late 2nd early 3rd. I imagine he is gone by LA's pick, would not be surprised if LA adds more picks than what they currently have though, and then maybe he comes into play.

Yeah, 4-10 appear pretty interchangeable depending on which scout you ask. There’s some talent in that range, but nothing compared to Hughes, Kakko, and Podzolkin.

I really like Dach and Cozen.
someone on Lakingsinsider board watched and posted: I seem to recall they were at the game...Dach had 2 or 3 pts and Cozens had 1 (as far as I recall) but he said Dach
was not as dominant / driven looking as Cozens...and that Dach seemed more perimeter. From what I have read, seems like Cozens is the better skater and tries
to make an impact every shift. Dach sounds more like the 2019-20 Kopitar. Hard to know, by just reading all of the info I find, but that's what I'm reading.

I wonder if Alex Turcotte is actually the better player, between these 3. Or even Boldy or Zegras? Or Byram, the defenseman.

Pure stat watching:
In their last h2h, Dach had 5 points (1 g, 4 a) to Cozens' 1 assist.

In the season, Dach has 2 goals and 6 assists in 4 games against Lethbridge. Cozens has 3 assists in 4 games against Saskatoon.

Overall, Cozens is leading with 30 g and 45 assists (75 points) in 61 games. Dach has 23 goals and 43 assists (66 points) in 55 games.

Both are the second leading scorer on their respective teams.

Since he's in the same league, I'll add Peyton Krebs. He has 19 g, 43 a (62 points) in 56 games. He is the leading scorer on his team.

Krebs has 1g, 2a in 3 games versus Saskatoon. He has 1 g, 3 a in 6 games against Lethbridge.

Dach has 2 assists in 4 games versus Kootenay. Cozens has 6 g, 3 a in 6 games versus Kootenay.

From watching them play:
Cozens, to me, is the safest. Even if he fails to score, his physical play and size can get him in the NHL.

Krebs does more with a bad team, is their leader, and plays in all situations. He's also the smallest of the three.

Dach has the size and skill, but not as physical. He is arguably the riskiest of the three.

Looking at play-style (not necessarily upside) I've seen these comparisons and think they are very fair:
Dach - Joe Thornton
Cozens - Ryan Getzlaf
Krebs - Brayden Point

I think I would put Boldy and Turcotte in the mix with Dach, Cozens and Krebs. I think it could be safe to say that one of these guys is going to be taken before Podkolzin because teams aren't going to want to risk having a guy they draft that high not come over. He could drop way down as a result of this even though he is a legit Top 3. I also think that Turcotte is going to go higher because he seems to be gaining steam in the rankings.

I would not be surprised to see Podkolzin not picked at 3. Too many talented centers after the top 2. Regardless, the team that drafts him(with the russian factor risk) will get a really good player, probably the most pure raw talent after Hughes.

I'm just scared of Turcotte because of injuries at this point. Similar to Podwhatever, Blake can't afford to blow two consecutive first round picks on players that can't play.

Not sure where this interview was conducted (I was looking for the article)

But this answer probably hurts his stock a lot: RW/LW Vasili Podkolzin - SKA-Neva St.Petersburg, VHL (2019 Draft)

- You could have been chosen by CHL , but did not, because you refused to go to Canada. Why?
- There is a type of people who simply do not have a desire to go there. I have friends who say: "Oh, America, Canada - this is very cool, I would like to live there all my life." I'm the opposite. I basically do not want to go there. Even more - play there. Because I understand that, most likely, I will lose more there than I'll acquire. Because I know very little language. And I know what kind of mentality there is, what kind of life. Because I was there in tournaments. And i don't have a desire to go there. To live alone in another country ... it's ok if you're in another city, as it's now, but at 17 years old in another country - I am not ready. I want to go there already as established hockey player and a man. With my family, probably. And now - it's too early for me.

Granted, I admire his candor and he's arguably a top five talent, but I just don't think it's a good idea to spend a high pick on a player who knows he doesn't want to come to North America. He may be worth the wait, but if he decides he never wants to come over even with a family, it's a huge loss.

Not to be that guy, but Vilardi was drafted in 2017 and this pick is 2019, the Kings took Kupari in 2018. So it wouldn't be "consecutive", but your point remains ;)

Say the Kings luck out and get one of Hughes/Kakko, do we go defenseman with our Toronto pick? If so, which defenseman should be available around 20-25 and who would you pick?
