If you like the Bjornfot pick, that’s perfectly fair. He’s not off the board. I personally don’t understand the reasoning behind passing one of the talented forwards left at #22 today, but whatever. Not the end of the world.

But let’s cut out the constant appeals to authority. Professional scouts don’t have some secret, forbidden knowledge. They have been and consistently are wrong across the board, and the hivemind of the Internet has indeed been proven correct. Half the scouts in 2008 thought Bogosian was a better pick than Doughty. Half the scouts thought Forbort was a solid pick over Tarasenko. And ALL of the scouts thought Nail Yakupov would be a bonafide star.

Scouts are human beings with biases and blind spots and they make mistakes. Period. It’s 2019. Fans have access to thousands of hours of junior and international hockey on their f***ing cell phones.

For f***’s sake, in 2014 Darryl Sutter was obsessed with sitting Tanner Pearson and instead playing Richards next to Carter when literally every fan on this very board was screaming to play Tanner and demote Richards. As soon as Sutter did exactly that, the team looked fantastic.

Sometimes fans are actually right, and the professionals don’t know what the f*** they’re doing. I’m not saying Bjornfot over Kaliyev is one of those times, but it’s not unheard of.

You can get hardworking and "character" players later in the draft as depth players. The Kings needed skill/speed/scoring in the 1st round, and they got another injury prone prospect and a questionable defenseman, whose mold could have been selected later. We could have gotten Zegras and Kaliyev, and had a lethal offense in 21-22 season. I don't anticipate Blake picking Kaliyev tomorrow. What a bust of a draft.

Zegras was so good he fell to 9. We took the BPA, which is what you do, not best player who can score more than picks 2-8. Turcotte was the right pick at 5.

Wouldn’t be the least surprised if the Kings field a few calls regarding pick #33.

I believe Dorion said he had some calls regarding #32 and he thought he could be busy leading up to the start of Round 2 tomorrow.

In the moment I was not happy at all, not because I didn't think Bjornfot wouldn't be good, but I thought this was the perfect time to take a risk. I suspect Blake and company saw that other teams were loading up on defensemen this draft and decided they couldn't take the risk that he might be there later. Since it seems like teams aren't seeing it Kaliyev in the 1st round so there's probably more to it that we don't know about.

There is still some talent on the board and we got an early pick tomorrow. They can still "redeem" themselves with a solid 2nd round pick choice. Honestly, they may not have made any mistakes, for all we know someone was going to take Bjornfot and we got a new Mattias Norstrom and hit a home run with our 2nd... Who knows. Onto day 2...

And what exactly can’t Kaliyev/Brink/Afanasyev do at #33 that they couldn’t do at #22???
They took whom they saw as BPA and they’re still likely to get a sniper... ‘nuff said

For all we know, Kaliyev may have interviewed poorly with several clubs. If that gets around, it doesn’t help the kid.

Combine that with some of his deficiencies on the ice and you got a guy, dispite his scoring prowess who goes falling into round 2.

remember when he said trading Jack Johnson for carter was a HUGE mistake? 3 months later we were lifting the cup.

Craig (Moron) Button:
While I understand what the Los Angeles Kings are trying to do, I don't like the move (by giving up a defenseman). I come from the school of thought that says you need 3, 4 good defensemen to be able to play and generate offense. I don't think (Carter) will address their needs.

He could be Danny Rousin 2.0. Remember that epic Al Murray pick?

that right there, is why he'll never be a gm again.

I don’t think anyone outside of the top ten will develop into a Richard winning sniper, but Kaliyev did just post 50 in his draft year. Usually players with that stat line go in the top 15, not fall out of the first round.

So who knows. Maybe the kid is just a lazy locker room cancer. Definitely worth taking a risk on at #22 and certainly worth the risk at #33.

They drafted another forward coming off a big injury with their best pick... again. If that’s not taking a risk I don’t know what is.

Kaliyev, for all the complaining around at why they didn't take him at 22, guess what, nobody else did. There's a reason why 31 other gms passed on him in the 1st round. He may be there at 33 if not, there are other good players.
