I think Clague's got a bit of a different skillset that we sort of need, though, more offense from the back end. This organization could use an elite offensive d-man. Not saying Clague's in that company, but he's a step in that direction.

Agreed. Clague probably has the most offensive upside out of any defenseman currently in the Kings' system. Plus he's still only 21. Yes, his defensive game needs to improve (and there's definitely still time for that to happen). But he's always going to be an offensive defenseman and the Kings need to be OK with that.

Most contenders around the league have at least one or two offensive defensemen in their top 4/top 6 that aren't too great in their own end but still hold important roles. It's honestly pretty crucial in today's NHL to have 1 or 2 Clague-type defensemen on your team that can move the puck well, jump up on the rush, etc. Guys like that REALLY help create offense, which as we all know hasn't exactly been a strength of the Kings for way too long.

Also, don't really see them trading JAD anytime soon. I'm not too sold on him, personally. But it seems most people in the Kings organization are still VERY high on him and think he's going to be a huge part of the future as a solid depth player/leader.

I would be curious to see the floor. Kings might have to sign a couple of free agents to reach the floor. Next year's cap is at roughly $60 million. Kings don't have many RFA's, really only Walker that would deserve a significant raise.

Stockpile picks or prospects with the extra cap space. Anymore Marleau contracts out there?

Kings will likely have an internal CAP again next year like they did this season. I would imagine they will be somewhere around $80 million when they sign the complete roster. Depends on how much they spend on that LHD they are looking for.

14. Like Bergevin, Los Angeles GM Rob Blake said it’s unlikely the Kings will be busy in free agency because of cap concerns. Depending on how things go, July 2021 could be a different story. I thought he did a good job of getting as many prospects/picks as he could, although Blake said it was bittersweet seeing some big parts of Stanley Cup champions move on. Blake added it was important to “stagger” the assets they received. “We didn’t want only draft picks, because they can’t help you for a few years. We needed some players who were closer than that.”

15. Asked about young players who took important steps this year, Blake said he is excited with the group at AHL Ontario, and liked the development of Matt Roy and Sean Walker on the right side behind Drew Doughty. “Blake Lizotte hit a wall because he’s never played this many games before,” but the Kings are really happy with where his game is going. Finally, Blake mentioned Gabe Vilardi. “Earlier in the year, we couldn’t know that he’d put himself in position to play NHL games this year. His development this season is very good for us.”

16. Heard this after I spoke to Blake, but I think Pittsburgh considered Trevor Lewis before going the Buffalo route.

The Athletic had Matt Roy listed as 6th in GSVA/WAR among rookies this year, just behind the top tier of Hughes, Merzlikins, etc. but ahead of Marino, Kubalik, and Olofsson.

Roy and Walker have been tremendous this season. I was very critical of them heading into this year, stating that we couldn’t win with them on the roster, and I was wrong. They’re looking an awful lot like this decade’s Muzzin and Martinez. Huge for us if they continue to progress.

Story of the year. Matt Roy. This 7th round pick is so flying under the radar, ESPN still thinks he's a LW in the box scores. After a rough first week, Roy has been nothing but gold overall. All of this for league minimum for this year and next season. . He has the 2nd pair right defensemen locked up. Looks like he pairs well with Mikey. If I'm the Kings, we start talking contract extension with term after July 1st for this just turned 25 year old. There is enough sample size here (92 NHL games) to show he has the right stuff. He was the best defensemen in ONT the year prior, and has not been scratched to my knowledge since he was called up last season.

Did you know he
1) Leads the team in plus/minus at +10 (all players combined are -156)
2) Leads the all Kings players in Corsi (CF% and CF% rel)
3) Plays 18 mins a night and gets PK time.
4) Leads all Kings players in blocked shots.
5) Leads all Kings defensemen in hits.
6) Is tied with Kopitar in team goals for per 60 min at even strength when he is on the ice.
7) Leads all Kings defensemen in the least goals against per 60 minutes at even strength.
8) Leads all Kings players in defense point shares (DPS).
9) At or near the top in pretty much every metric and fancy stat category that players are evaluated upon on the Kings.

What's stellar about Roy's emergence (and I'm not trying to overlook him again by saying this--simply adding on) is that it means either Walker OR Roy is 2RHD and 3RHD. That's good depth at a time when we didn't expect it, and means the puzzle pieces are figuring out the LHDs in Bjornfot, Anderson (who has impressed me thus far too), Clague BEFORE even talking about camp surprises.

If nothing really comes of this season but youth getting experience and the d-core solidifying, that's still a great boon. And that Roy is staying consistent late in the season and arguably getting stronger at a time when many first-full-year players start faltering is really impressive.

Roy +4 today, now +14

Still have Tobias coming!
And he has the potential to be the best of the lot, in terms of blue line prospects. Roy’s emergence and Anderson looking the part also mean he’s no longer the saviour for our defence so the pressure is seriously reduced on both Björnfot and the team. That’s only a good thing.

It also means they have more flexibility with the veteran LHD we expect them to bring in. Because Björnfot, Anderson and Clague (maybe) bring decent talent they can really focus on the intangibles with the LHD, which I think is the most important factor. We need someone with know how that will be a stabilizing influence and can play a consistent solid 18 min game. Someone to help mentor the kids. They don’t need to be relied on to fill a 1st pairing role or run the power play.

I am hoping that Morverare will have a similar surprise element. Probably a long shot tho.

Hutton has been decent, wouldn’t mind him being brought back at this point.

Iaffalo Kopitar Brown
Kempe Carter Grundstrom(waivers)
Frk Vilardi Kaliyev (9 games)
???? Lizotte JAD

Moore/Pro/Amadio/Wagner fighting for a spot or two.

Throw Lewis in there too. (I can see him coming back honestly, don’t think LA is sold on this group)

Feels like Carter is just taking up space now but I would love for him to move to wing and have a resurgence if he is stuck in LA.

AHL
Kupari
Fagemo
Thomas
Dudas
Essiymont-Kings have mentioned his name a few times as a player they like.

Wildcard
Turcotte
Tyler Madden (if signed)
#1 pick
