Gabe broke my heart; he said that Cliffy was the most influential veteran for him before he was traded. He said he reached out to make Gabe feel part of the team whether or not he was at the rink.

To hell with the 2nd round pick, bring back the Colonel!

He also mentioned that Cernak was the toughest player he played against in Juniors. God dammit.

What the Kings lost with Richards and Mitchell's departures was accountability.

You couldn't get a toe in Quick's crease without getting the business from Mitchell, from the first shift in camp to the Cup getting hoisted - a constant standard of conduct.

Richards was the last player every teammate saw before stepping on the ice. No, it wasn't an intimidating glare, it was a constant standard of play, whether you want to call it encouraged or demanded, likely somewhere inbetween, that allowed a bunch of individuals to coalesce into a team. If it could be quantified it would have been duplicated by now. He had an innate ability to win, to get others to raise their play.

That is fully evident, to those who understand the game, in Game 1 of the Vancouver series. They not only took home ice, they stepped on Vancouver's throat and clearly and definitively put themselves in charge of the series. That doesn't happen by accident, it happens by picking the right spots to engage the right players and put them on tilt. Richards not only played well, he put both Burrows and Kesler on their heels for the duration. Everybody played well, Mike Richards showed them how to win.

Its no coincidence that the Kings "core" was 10-1 in playoff series with Mike Richards and 0-4 without him. Of course it wasn't just him. Winning is a skill in and of itself, and it isn't learned by osmosis. THAT was Lombardi's biggest mistake. He couldn't replace what he lost in Richards and Mitchell, the rest of the team didn't have that skill of accountability, and he spent himself into a corner assuming that the "core" had learned what it took to win. They didn't and haven't since.

Its comical to read some of the drivel here by people who cannot help but underline their inability to understand the non-statistical parts of the game.
I'll start by saying that Willie Mitchell will always be one of my favorite Kings of all time. Yes he brought accountability on the ice, but what he brought off the ice was a love of and joy for the game of hockey. You saw a guy who knew that any season could be his last and competed like it. You also saw a guy who had a huge smile and was excited to play his best every game.

Rock solid on defense. Seemed like he never made a mistake. Absolutely dependable and accountable to his teammates.

Each and every one of the vets on the team brought a little something different in terms of leadership to the team. No one player won the Cup, but all of them were difference makers. Amazing to watch those three seasons. I'm convinced that had Mitchell played in 2013, the Kings would have repeated. Just a special, special teammate.

This reads like the league is saying "we're doing this, so get your **** together".

Side note, it mentions conditional picks, the Kings have no conditional picks in 2020. They do however have 3 conditional picks in future drafts stemming from trades made in February, doesn't like those would be impacted.

On the mainboard they are bitching because GMs don't like it, I think the league has made it abundantly clear that they don't care. As long as the vast majority of owners are onboard with the idea it's gonna happen. You'd think eventually it would click with some of these people, who do Daly & Bettman work for? the owners. So if they didn't like the idea it'd be dead and buried.

I think it would be a good idea to go ahead and have the draft. Teams that are in the playoffs will bitch and moan, especially if a higher seeded team gets knocked out early, but that's life. Detroit needs help from this draft. I have no problem with them picking no lower than second overall.

COVID-19 is turning out to be a pretty good deal for Ottawa. How the f*** does Wilson still have a job? So, if I am understanding this correctly, the late season surge will likely have the Kings picking 4th overall, with a small chance of getting knocked down to 5th overall.

Stolen from the main board:

These would be the new 1st overall pick probabilities.

48.2% - Detroit
18.8% - Ottawa
14.2% - Ottawa (San Jose)
10.7% - Los Angeles KINGS
8.1% - Anaheim

Doubt we move up yet if we stay at 4 means we get to walk with Byfield or Drysdale either I'd have taken #2 last draft. OTT/DET apparently prefer TS reason I list QB & JD.

We weren't gettin the 1st overall anyways so if we stay at 4 or 5. Siiick. Let's do this. Who we taking? Laf, By, Stuz, ?.

Drysdale. But since OTT is likely to pick 2/3 (or 1/3) under the proposed format, they could go FWD and Drysdale, leaving Byfield or Stutzle. Now, should they end up 5th, Lucas Raymond is probably the choice.

Again, this is all hypothetical, but we'll know early this week.
