Kopitar at his average scores a goal like once every 4-5 games, outside the times he completely goes into a drought.

With his increased salary, the crack down on obstruction and the Kings playing more aggressive the past couple of years, you expect more from him.

If he scored every 3 games, no one would criticize Kopitar.

That’s funny.

Actually hilarious because I’ve actually negotiated for a 2019 TRD premium 4Runner. Was it easy? No and it took time but I got $$$ shaved off and thousands in extras thrown in.

It all depends on your perception of value and money.

There are dealers up in the PacNW selling Trails/TRD Offroad's for under MSRP. TRD Pro? That's tough.....oof, good luck with that. God help if you're in Hawaii.

Let me ask you this, would you pay the full asking price on a new car? Why?

Same concept here. Why are you so sure that the extra 2 million or less term isn’t important? On one hand you are arguing that it’s a hard cap league and nobody wants these bloated contracts, on the other it doesn’t matter what Kopitar’s contract was, give him 8 years 80 million. So what?

It’s not about 2 million aav and what player you get for that amount, it’s about creating flexibility for the roster.

Well DL put himself in a terrible position to negotiate by going all in on Lucic. Then, the team went ahead and had a good record that year. They weren't good, but they finished with the 8th best record, and at the time of the signing, they were top 5. DL could never have sold selling Kopitar at the 16 deadline with that good of a record. Not when they were still sort of close to the "just get in" years. Could've walked away from Kopitar, somehow, and he could've gone to Dallas, or Florida, or whatever other non-hockey market to collect a check until he called it a career, but then the Kings still would've been screwed. The McDavid and Matthews drafts were over by then, get nothing for Kopitar, and who knows, maybe even re-sign Lucic to some dumb contract.

um... trade? Russia? What is the game plan here?

Sounds like they don't want him in games, first and foremost. I assume the cap hit and all stays even if it was a mutual termination of the contract, if that's even possible with a guy that old, and with another year left. I don't believe they could even loan him to Russia with the NMC, unless he agreed to it. You'd have to find a team that wants the player he is to trade him, and even then he still gets a say.

Short term plan would just be you're not playing anymore. Maybe if he showed something extra in practice for the foreseeable future, but why, he'd be playing for the 31st overall team, so what's the point? Then worst case, it goes to June, and they buy him out.

I gave Kovy the benefit of the doubt when playing under Stevens and Willie because they didn't know how to use him. If TMac has a problem with him then the issue is kovy

The problem is expecting a 35 year old to learn to be defensively responsible when he hasn't had to be his entire career. On a team that is LAST in the league.

I think they wanted him to fit with Kopitar, and he doesn't fit with Kopitar. In 17-18, they weren't good defensively, but they didn't give up a lot of goals. You probably don't expect to go from the fewest GA, to 25th in GA in the following 99 games, even if Kovalchuk doesn't care about defense.

Not a great signing, but it didn't cost anything in the big picture. Maybe some pride, but they also weren't trying to tank.

The issue is the Blake and Luc show who seemed to believe that adding a 35 year old Kovalchuk would improve the Kings offense in any meaningful way.

Or in other words, the issue is the Blake and Luc show who seemed to believe the Kings 17/18 campaign wasn’t smoke and mirrors, and they needed to add to that roster.

Yeah but going from 1st in GA to 25th in GA isn't Kopi's fault. That is on Blake. Reason being, he's the one that is in charge of hiring a coach to implement the correct system. These players have had to learn 3 different systems the last 2 years. And they all suck! Trading Pearson didn't do anything to wake these guys up. Being sellers at the deadline didn't either. Benching Toffoli? Kempe? NOPE! Changing the coach? Changing the system? None of it has worked. We need to strip this club from top to bottom, including Blake and Luc.
