McDavid has been playing on trash teams since being in the NHL and still has decent production. We’ve heard for many years, essentially since Kopitar has been in the league that he’s not producing because he doesn’t have x,y,z.
They aren’t producing because of the coaches, management won’t get them the right line mate. Every year there’s an excuse. I’m tired of hearing about them. Tired of hearing about how it’s everything and everyone else except the player themselves.
You don’t get paid 10 million a year to rely on everyone else to make your game work. Doesn’t work that way.
There’s zero accountability in LA. None. These guys are pampered and soft, collecting a check and going home. You think they give a **** about winning? (Scoff)
McDavid has always had decent offensive support, always. Draisital has spent plenty of time with him, there’s Nugent-Hopkins, Hall, Eberle at one point and even a 20g season from Lucic. Kopi has never had anyone at Draisitals level to play with, not ever. McDavid has never had the poor offensive support Kopi has had.
The Oilers inability to defend has long been their issue.
He’s also a different player to Kopi, my point is with the dross Kopi Has as support, he wouldn’t be as effective as he has been, his numbers would be lower. Of course he’d score more than Kopi, but no one is saying he’s as good as McDavid. There isn’t a single player in the league that doesn’t rely on teammates, to some degree, to play at their highest level.
It’s not an excuse to say that certain circumstances mean Kopi doesn’t score as highly as he could, but there are reasons. For most of his career it’s been fine as he’s been able to play a solid 2 way game consistently. Now he’s learning a new way of playing and he’s surrounded by garbage. Sorry those are valid reasons and whilst I want to see better, I can be realistic in my expectations. He’s not going to just flip a switch and get it immediately, it takes time.
I don’t care about his cap hit, where we are it isn’t relevant. I’m more interested in the long game and there is no reason he can’t be a significant factor going forward. That may well be by being traded at some point also, but I’d think it better to do that when our young centers have more than a year in the NHL under their belts. I mean Turcotte probably ends up a regular Selke candidate (with more offence than Kopi), so who better to mentor him for a while?
