Are they trying to actually get something for him or are they trying to dump him?

They're checking to see if he has any value to anybody before they terminate the deal. It's a long shot, but the thought is that there might be a team (ie Florida with his former coach/GM) who thinks he has any gas left in the tank. If Byfuglien didn't report, then the new team could also terminate the deal.

It doesn't seem likely given Byfuglien has a 7.6 mil cap hit (6 mil in real money) for next season, but I suppose you can't blame Winnipeg for trying to get a conditional pick out of it.

I know others have said this, but it's a PSA worth saying from time to time. Subscribe to The Athletic if you love hockey (why are you here if you don't?). They have the best coverage and they always have deals on subscriptions. You won't regret it.

LeBrun on The Athletic:

Kings do well

I thought Kings GM Rob Blake did a really good job in his returns for both Tyler Toffoli and Alec Martinez this week.
I thought Toffoli would net a second-round pick and a B-level prospect. The Kings got more than that from Vancouver to be sure. As for Martinez, a second-round pick plus a conditional pick sounded like a fair return. Instead, Blake got two guaranteed second-round picks on Wednesday from Vegas in a trade my pal Bob McKenzie of TSN had reported a day earlier.

But the cherry on the sundae for the Kings in both deals is that they didn’t have to eat any salary. Because of the Golden Knights’ tight cap situation, I know people were surprised when it was revealed the Kings didn’t retain salary on Martinez. But L.A. was never going that route in any trade that involved Martinez due to the fact that he’s got another year on his deal after this season at $4 million.

They were willing to eat money on Toffoli, and for a while, that was part of the discussion with Vancouver. Instead, the money part got settled by taking Tim Schaller and his $1.9-million salary.

The reason? Teams can retain salary on a maximum of three players per season. The Kings are already retaining on Kyle Clifford from the Leafs trade. In the end, they move pending UFAs such as Trevor Lewis or Ben Hutton or Derek Forbort before Monday’s deadline, it will likely facilitate a move to be able to retain salary on those guys. So L.A. wanted to keep that option open.

Left unsaid is the ability to retain on Jeff Carter. Getting an asset for him while at the same time getting much of his salary off the books would make Blake look like a genius. If you were the Bruins, would you rather have Carter or Thornton? Kings can take back Backes as well while San Jose can't.

And if the Kings take Backes, they shouldn’t have to retain on Carter.

Lets play out a scenario, lets say the kings retain $1M on Carter and move him, and then he retires after this year which leaves the kings with a cap recapture penalty just above $2m for two years. Do they also still have the retention of $1M for each year?

I am guessing no as when a player retires (unless it is a +35 contract) his cap hit comes off.

edit: answered my own question, just needed to write it out haha

 This guy definitely has seen the rumors and does not want to leave the beach. Mysterious injury keeping him out of games leading up to the deadline.

His priorities are luxury living and happy times with the family now more than hockey. He is just collecting a paycheck and I think that he would make life hard for the Kings if they try to move him.

I give him credit for bouncing back somewhat this year but he is just frosting for a cake you can't eat anymore.

Going to the Bruins would be a chance for another Cup. He would be a great depth piece for them, and he would be in a premium market. I think if the Kings took Backes and retained a bit on Carter, we may be able to get a prospect as well as a 1st. Our salary cap next year would be ugly with all the dead money, but we are playing the kids on ELCs so it won;t matter, and everyone knows next season is a building year. We can mutually terminate Backes's contract to get another roster spot.

Am i the only one who doesn't care about Schaller?

Possibly Schiller helps with some toughness we lost by moving Cliffy? According to Canucks fans he will help our loss column.

Ask any Canuck fan and they will tell you he's one of the worst players in the league... and while that's a bold statement, that certainly tells you all you need to know in regards to them being able to afford Toffoli.

Why are we speculating on the motives of Jeff Carter? Is this some sort of coping thing like when you're getting ready to break up with your girlfriend and you start trashtalking her to make it easier?

It isn't exactly a secret about how Carter has no desire to be traded and could even threaten to retire if it happened.

I would have no problem taking Backes for Carter with some retention if a 1st + was bandied about. I'd also have no problem with him being on the roster even if he's washed.

That's a Scott Thornton bridge dude right there. Guy basically decided he'd be a fighter just to stay in the lineup. Admirable stuff from a veteran with an over half point per game average who isn't a good fighter.
