Hmm. I could go either way on this, as Ive said on this board multiple times before. Other then just checking stats I don't really know where all these prospects are in terms of their development or where they will be to start next season (which is another 8 months of development from now) or who we get with our first pick next draft.

But to assume that none of our prospects (or only a couple) should play (due to development) next season is something I flat out disagree with.

I am of the belief that most players develop better in the NHL then they would at lower levels, provided they get sufficient minutes and a team willing to deal with the ups and downs.

I look at the talent we could potentially roll out if we play a large number of our prospects (Turcotte, Kaliyev, Vilardi, Bjornfot, Kupari, 2020 high 1st, etc...) And all of a sudden we likely have a drastically more talented team then what we have been watching for years. AND I think in most cases it's BETTER for their development.

If you were to suppliment that with some impact players (Free Agents or via trades) then you might be making the most out of Doughty and Kopitars timeline, Helping the prospects develop, and maybe a legit young playoff team very quickly.

I don't necessarily think this strategy would be shortsighted or wrong.
I see this combination of prospects with Kopi and Doughty plus a couple impact FA's and all of a sudden this team looks very talented, with great leadership and fits nicely under the cap.
I think what you're describing is what will happen anyway. There will be a distribution in the roster from established veterans to high end prospects (needing 1 or 2 years of development) ready for full time NHL roster spots. Longer range prospects will fill out the AHL roster and there will still be some trades and free agent signings. Remember Lombardi talking about getting better and younger simultaneously. I really think the Kings are on the right track.

Derek Forbort is now currently the 6th highest paid King

Of the players currently signed, all salaries go down next year, except for Iafallo, Kempe, Moore, and Petersen. Quick's drops 50%. Kopitar gets $3m less. A combined $2.5m less for Brown and Carter. Even Doughty goes down $2m, before going back up again. At least we have that going for us as fans.

definitely but they have no team, no future, and eugene melnyk

Nah, they got some good kids in Belleville and their reserve list ain’t too shabby. But, yeah...Melnyk, no bueno.

Not sure what Mel Gibson was doing hanging with Melnyk at the game lastnight.

Kings went from one of the oldest teams to now closing in on among the youngest once Lewis goes.

They also went from having one of the highest payrolls to one of the lowest. The only team who has more cap space than the Kings is the New Jersey Devils.

That’s quite the accomplishment, even with the supposed stifling contracts of Doughty, Kopitar, Brown, Quick and Carter.

Add in the top prospect pool in the NHL and hopefully good picks this summer and there is hope on the horizon.

When you don't have to worry about having proven depth to help them, sure, those contracts hinder nothing.

I think they will try to speed things up this summer and move some kids for immediate help.

Maybe if they get an NHL ready player at the top of the draft like in 2008, but, anything less than an elite NHL ready prospect, and I'd say that's doubtful.

I meant use some of their picks to grab some proven NHL players that teams can’t afford. TB and other teams will need to off load some good players and the Kings have the assets and cap space to improve their roster while not mortgaging all of their future. They couldn’t do that before the past 2 years...

If they did something along those lines, I wouldn’t mind a guy like Pavel Buchnevich. If the Rags deal Kreider, I highly doubt Buch gets dealt.

Another one is Ondrej Kase. Bad luck with the injury bug but he’s a talented player.

Cap space is king and they got plenty of it. Hopefully they are smart with it and are looking ahead as to how they are going to allot the space to suit their needs, now and in the future.

They will have to add some legit NHL players and they know that. The plan isn’t to ice a team full of kids...

I also like our kids walking onto a team with 1C Kopitar and 1D Doughty for insulation, instead of 1C Colin White and 1D Thomas "we're going to play you 38 f***ing minutes a game until you die" Chabot.

Completely agree, when you gut the entirety of the rest of the roster, no big deal. Martinez and Clifford seemed to be trying to lead by example, but now they are gone. It's understandable why it happened, and no reason for it not to happen, but I think it is incorrect to assume what is left over is going to lead the kids. I would hope the plan for Blake at this point is to bring in at least one or two established leaders to help the team play with some kind of bite next season.

I’m sure the team will make some veteran additions over the summer. Possibly bring Clifford back, look at UFAs like Frolik, they could even shell out some money and sign another bruiser on the blueline with a dman like Radko Gudas. There are plenty of mid-tier UFAs to target who can fill roster spots for the next 2-3 years to buy some time.
