I don't think a pending UFA that's due for a massive raise is going to get the return people think. Even if it's an elite player.

Teams usually can't afford to retain said player which diminishes their value.
Begs the question, is it ever a good time to move any of these players.

I think they would have received a nice return for Doughty, but in a salary cap league they would have had to take back at least one contract from the other team's NHL roster. A GM today has to be creative.

Do you really think Blake had a green light to rebuild any sooner than he did? I don’t. History tells us that rebuilds do not happen in LA without the say-so of ownership it was the same for DL. He then started well by signing a coach that will ensure the best possible draft pick. I’m also not convinced we had any option other than to honour the promise that have been made to Stevens with regards to the head coach job. The interview process always seemed to be a case of going through the motions to make it look like Blake had final say so. Given that promise have been made it was probably the right thing for the integrity of the organisation, if nothing else.

Honoring promises, meh. We want the ruthlessness. That's what we criticize DL on. It's believing in the myth of Mike Richards. Today, we love how he took it upon himself to trade Visnovsky before the NTC, that he gave Visnovsky, kicked in. At the time, I think there were people that were worried about the morality of it, but then when Stoll scored that OT goal, screwing a guy over in the pursuit of glory is for the greater good. We wouldn't trade that goal to make Visnovsky feel better.

But the rest of it, 100% agree. Had they not managed to make the playoffs in 17-18, maybe Doughty isn't here. He probably still is, because if one of the biggest names in franchise history wanted to stay, they were going to find a way to keep him, but maybe Doughty himself would've wanted out a little more. Certainly there's no Kovalchuk if they don't play 4 games against Vegas.

You are right, Dean took over a franchise with a number 1 center, number 1 winger and number 1 goalie in the system. Blake took over a team with those same players in the system except they had big contracts and were on the wrong side of 30.

Who was the biggest prospect in the Kings pool when Blake took over? Amadio?

I'm not sure Quick was, or was seen, as a #1G at the time. Bernier was supposed to be the guy. Quick stole his spotlight. He wasn't the 11th pick. #1W might be a bit much for Brown too. He was good, a #1W here, but league wide, he was probably below that 1st tier of wingers.

But yeah, DL and Blake started in two different places. Not even close to the same. Recent success by the team was sort of similar, but the contract stuff is the most important part, and the two situations couldn't have been more different.

Begs the question, is it ever a good time to move any of these players.

A year too early rather than a year too late is the classic time. Doughty isn't being traded in 17-18 because they made the playoffs. Would that have been too late to get prime value even if the team sucked? Probably. If 16-17 would've been the right time, 15-16 is even better, but DL was all in that year. It doesn't seem like DL had any thoughts of doing much during 16-17, so really it comes down to the 2017 draft as the only realistic time Doughty would've or could've been dealt. That's still a 1 year rental situation though. The best time is the 2016 draft, and yet better still might've been when the run was over after 14-15.

Ironically, Kopitar with max retention might have more value now than he was a pending UFA.

The ask would be 3 quality assets; a 1st, good young player, good prospect.

But of course we know this isn't realistic because Kopitar would have to wave his NMC, and would ownership really be willing to retain that much? I don't think any team has ever retained that much on a contract before.

Also a reminder that Cloutier was plan B. Lombardi tried hard to get Roberto Luongo from Florida at the draft, but Vancouver was able to swing that deal and took advantage of a desperate GM. Probably would’ve been better off riding Garon and LaBarbera that season.
that's right, forgot about that.
I remember thinking the rumored Kings deal would have been better for florida at the time.

The narrative that Rob Blake is on his ‘third coach’ needs correcting. The signing of WD was only an interim signing and was never going to be permanent. It twists the argument and is inappropriately used as a stick to beat him with when it is completely out of context. Blake is on his second permanent coach which is a very important distinction to make.

Fair, but I do question why WD was the guy even on an interim basis. I remember at the time being like, "sure lets see what happens" and quickly it became "what have we done".
When WD was announced Canucks fans warned us and they were 100% right.

we tried to suck and secure the 1OA pick but failed... then he was gone... I think DWdid much more harm than people realize, he killed the confidence of a few players and playing favorites certainly didn't help

The first rounder doesn't come close to covering the value of the retention so ultimately you'd be trading Kopi for a couple non impact pieces. No thanks.

Define "value of retention". What is the value of retaining a depreciating asset which is not having a significant impact on the team's performance?

I agree. When I say "good" prospect. I mean like a top 10 prospect.

For example, from Colorado (who's a good fit for Kopitar) I would ask for Byram.

What to watch:
There was some surprise last summer when GM Rob Blake wasn't that active in reconfiguring this roster. As he told ESPN, that's because the Kings wanted veteran stopgaps in place ahead of their youth movement. Now the Kings look poised to ship out some veteran players at the deadline.

Chief among them is winger Tyler Toffoli, a right-handed-shooting pending UFA who is going to get a look from several teams, including Calgary, Boston and Pittsburgh. Defenseman Alec Martinez has another year on his deal but could be in demand on the right side. Plus, role players such as Trevor Lewisand Kyle Clifford could be on the block as well.

As always, keep in mind higher-priced veterans such as Jeff Carter (signed through 2022 at $5,272,727 AAV) and Jonathan Quick (signed through 2023 at $5.8 million AAV), though a deadline move for either seems unlikely.

Notes/restrictions:
  • The Kings have more than $23 million in deadline cap space per Cap Friendly, so absorbing a problem contract from another team with a draft pick sweetener isn't out of the question.
  • Los Angeles has 11 pending free agents, including Toffoli (UFA), Lewis (UFA), Clifford (UFA), Derek Forbort (UFA), Ben Hutton (UFA) and Joakim Ryan (UFA).
  • Only three players have trade protection on the Kings: Anze Kopitar (NMC), Dustin Brown (NTC) and Drew Doughty (NMC).
  • The Kings have picks in every round for the next three drafts.
Our take: It won't be a complete sell-off, as the Kings' prospects remain a couple of years away from ripening. But Toffoli, Lewis and Martinez (depending on the offers) appear to be very much on the block.

Could have swore that when Willie D was hired the plan was still to make the playoffs. That held up to the Pearson trade. It was until just about a year ago when Muzzin was traded that the rebuild was announced. Everything up to that point was about making the playoffs, with some cup contender mentions for good PR/marketing.

Think about that, Willie D was hired to turn the season around.

Kings fire John Stevens, name Willie Desjardins as interim coach

It hasn’t gone the way we expect it to, and we haven’t played the way we expected to,” Blake said. “What Willie will bring — what we want to bring back — is we want to get the compete level up in our players. We’ve got to get the passion back in the game. We expect fully that he can right that and take us in the right direction.

If by “right direction” you think Blake meant lottery team instead of playoff team, I’ve got some swampland in Florida for sale.

I agree. But if the Luc was part of making that promise maybe it was a decision Blake had to make. I have no idea if it’s true but it’s easily possible... just spitballing. My point is primarily that when change happens in an organisation that people new to roles often have to toe the line for certain decisions they inherit, rather than make. Blakes biggest ‘errors’ are all pre-rebuild and are things that could easily have been heavily influenced by decisions made by others. It’s why I see minimal value beating him over the head for those decisions which were also made in relation to a different strategic direction that he almost certainly was given. He should stand or fall on his execution of the rebuild, end of story.

When you hire the guy you have to at least let him think he has the chance of the job full time. If the guy you want isn’t yet available then you have to have someone, so they need some incentive. If you’re looking to tank you’re not going to publicly say so.

also Blake: “we’ve hired WD.”

Hindsite is 20/20 but I think LA should have just kept Stevens and made the change in the summer

It was obviously/clearly a panic move because the team came out flat in preseason games and carried over into the season.

Just another example of management being amateurs.

Newbie here, coming in peace. With all due respect, most of this thread for the past 6+ pages at least (and some other threads) has turned into a debate about DL vs. Blake, which isn't really a 2019-20 Kings rumor or news (I get that it was sparked by the rumor Blake might be on the way out but that was posted like 10+ pages ago and this argument happens in a number of other threads). To be honest, it's annoying.. I come on this thread trying to see if there's any new trade rumors and I have to sift through page after page on non-related discussion posts.

So I created a new thread 'Dean Lombardi vs Rob Blake' where we can all argue this topic until we're blue in the face in a more appropriate setting. Feel free to go over there and dismantle my thoughts on RB, it'll be fun. But yeah, hopefully we can keep this more focused on actual rumors/news. Thanks everyone, GKG

I liked Stevens but not only did the Kings come out flat, he had no idea what to do about it. He was dead in the water and had to go.

Not much you can do in that situation when the players don’t take care of business in the offseason. It was also noted by reports that training camp was pretty laid back than previous years. Safe to say the hunger was gone, and the fans got duped by management.

Exactly, which should have told him it was time to rebuild.

That's what players wanted, and Kopitar had his best individual season, and Brown was given plenty of ice time again, under Stevens. Sounds like management was duped by the players, yet again. They did the same under DL after he was forced to continue believing in them. They just had to go on that little winning streak in 14-15.
