I think if Byram fell to 5 and the Kings took him, pick 22 probably would have been 'that forward that was in a dead heat' with Bjornfot. I think it may have been Tomasino. I do not think it was Kaliyev, as it was referenced a few times that the Kings also had concerns about his compete (but never his character) and 'felt comfortable (or other word(s) Yannetti used) with taking him at 33. I think we can all agree - well there could be a few who do not - that the first 4 picks in: Turcotte, Bjornfot, Kaliyev, and Fagemo have the potential of all making impacts with the Kings.

Prospects already making impacts by October 4...crazy. Thomas 8 pts in 4 games, Fagemo 3 pts in 3 games in SHL, Kupari scores a goal in first pro game, JAD scores a goal and had an assist in tonights Reign game, Kaliyev has 6 pts in 4 games...Aidan (flying under the radar) Dudas has 6 pts in 4 games and Cal Petersen had a 41 save shutout, in 5-0 Reign win. And Bjornfot is ready to play LHD1 tomorrow night. ..and he's got Drew pumped as well.

I'm shocked Byram didn't have a better camp. He def. did not look like he belonged with the big boys this year.

A year down with WHL Giants and then he'll be skating laps up the ice around our forwards (if he can get by Turcotte :sarcasm:).

I have no problem with you being European or calling out your bias towards European players. I'm an American meathead that likes North American meatheads and I have a known bias towards said meatheads.

I'm just calling a spade a spade. I don't dislike European players, Europeans in general or even you in particular.

I'm not hung up on the Fantenberg thing one bit. I simply reached in to the way back machine to an argument we had in the past like you did with this Hickey thing. It was just some supporting evidence that you will go to bat for a guy based on his background, unless you thought Fantenberg was actually good which then calls other things in to question. In the end, Blake stole a pick by trading Fantenberg and then both players barely made an NHL roster this season while the one I prefer is still with the team I cheer for so everything worked out great.
Before last season started, I said Fantenberg should be playing over MacDermid and that also happened. You thought otherwise. Great that MacDermid is still with us but thats because he played in the AHL.

Fantenberg is a bottom pairing NHL player. No idea why you cant understand this concept. You can make fun of me anytime when I am wrong but I was right.

Bjornfot still has to prove a lot but the similar scouting report with Hickey was a wrong one. No matter what people said about it, the dude simply just continued with that nonsense, back than. Its a good thing, it was just three months ago so people can still remember that.

The Ryan McDonagh comparison is a much better one. And dont get me wrong, I really liked Hickey.

Just because you say it doesn’t make it any more true. Yanetti literally says it was a dead heat between a forward and a defenseman.

But I don’t think anyone here is upset about drafting Bjornfot, and those that were - myself included - were clearly wrong. Hopefully he turns out to be on the top pair with Drew for the next decade! And hopefully Kaliyev is scoring 50 goals alongside Turcotte and Kupari. :D

You forgot Quinton Byfield:naughty:

Can we stop bickering and talk about lines during practice, potential trades, you know.. normal rumors and news.

Thanks!

True...to start getting back on track. Even though Blake locked up both Campbell and Petersen, (which was brilliant to get both done) I don't see all 3 staying with the Kings, more
than a year from now. I think something will give and 1 of them be traded by this coming off season...if not this coming trade deadline. I bet GM's will want Petersen, more
than Quick or Campbell. But if Quick can get back closer to old form and Campbell play like last year, I suppose it could be any of the 3 moved. Quick will have 3 more years left and
with Rinne, Lundqvist and Fleury playing past 36 yrs of age, Jonathan may well be able to play out the next 3 years.

I don't think the Kings can get fair value for Campbell in a deal. He turns 28 in January and has never been the sole starter and carried a team...but he's capable.
No one is going to give assets of fair value, kind of like the Kings getting Toby Reider for Kuemper. The Kings were not going to get his true value back in a deal.
Wasn't he like 10-1 for the Kings? He was actually a main reason the Kings made the playoffs, with that record. And Darcy was 27. This is EXACTLY the Jack
Campbell situation. Stellar backup at 27-28 years old..capable of being a starter, just like Keumper...but not fair trade value. I think Keumper was more worth
like a second round pick and not Toby Reider.

Petersen, on the other hand, is younger and has more upside than Campbell. I think GMs would offer more for him than Campbell. But I would rather keep Petersen.
It's going to be interesting to see what unfolds...and who is exposed to Seattle.

Yeah I could definitely see a goalie being moved, we have a few in the system now who could move up and fill a vacated role. I don't think the Kings will trade Campbell during the season. He just signed an extension so that would send a bad message. Maybe Peterson is a main piece for current roster help if we're in the playoff race.

But you probably wouldn't have been in such an argument with SR10 if his last name was Jones v. Bjornfot. That's the point. Much like you were carrying the torch for Phantomberg, a guy who is a nothing player.

As for saying you would admit that you were wrong, there are a couple of items here.

1 - Are you even right? He hasn't played a single regular season NHL game. Lack of offense can still be an issue and doesn't preclude a player from being "Top Pairing" (see Forbort, Derek).

2 - When would you get to admit you were wrong? Four years after his draft year? But you can roll in here based off of a training camp and run a victory lap? Again, I think you would show more restraint if this was some guy named Jones that you liked more than SR10 did v. a European prospect.

I think the point of the Hickey comparison is that Hickey was a reach and SR10 felt the same about Bjornfot. Definitely not as much of a reach but a reach nonetheless. It is a message board so hyperbole reigns supreme and, as you've shown, taking shots at prior arguments does as well. That's all well and good but it is understandable for someone to get riled up when you take a shot like that: especially out of nowhere and much too early. I mean, Hickey has played 450 NHL games and Bjornfot has yet to play one.

I'd say Bjornfot is already a better prospect than Hickey ever was simply based on already playing with men and this training camp since Hickey didn't really impress post-draft, but it is still way too early to be anointing him.

That’s the thing, too: I never even claimed Bjornfot was destined to top out as another Thomas Hickey in terms of skill level. All I said was the two had very similar scouting reports. That’s it. But apparently that’s trashing Bjornfot.

Like in soccer forums, though, European fans have their pet countries and pet players who are untouchable royalty.

There is no such thing, not now or ever, as "best player available". Its a complete misnomer and used only to avoid discussing draft strategy. It is a term that cannot be defined because every single pick is chosen via a variety of variable information.

Drafting by some kind of niche need is precisely what led to picks like Forbort over Tarasenko and Teubert over literally any other good pick after him.

While I agree there isn’t any universal objective “best player available” there are obviously good picks and bad picks. If you desperately need a shutdown defenseman and have the choice between Tarasenko and Forbort, obviously Tarasenko is still the better pick regardless of need. So no, best player available isn’t just some made up concept. We’ve seen first hand what happens when scouting staffs get too far off in the weeds of assembling the perfect puzzle of a team and drafting solely on need versus raw talent.

Yanetti outright said they were nervous about the Bjornfot or Kaliyev pick at #22, because regardless of who they picked there was a good chance the other could be gone by #33. Go re-read the interview.

You can make what you will of him saying all that. But to me, at the very least, it implies Bjornfot and Kaliyev were valued equally by Kings scouts. None of us knew we would get lucky and get BOTH. Not even Kings scouts knew that, otherwise why the anxiety? Just think critically for a second about what Yanetti is saying there.

The only issue now on this board is a certain subset of posters becoming the Tone Police and admonishing others for “freaking out” over the Bjornfot pick. Not a single f***ing poster has trashed Bjornfot after getting Kaliyev at #33. We’re all thrilled we got them both, and we’ve all praised the Kings staff for correctly parsing out the pattern of the draft. So the aforementioned subset of posters have resorted to creating fields of straw men.

Until both Bjornfot and Kaliyev are long into their NHL careers, no poster should be running victory laps about an argument that ceased to exist the moment we made our 33rd overall pick.

Blake traded the only tradeable veteran asset he had last year in Muzzin...and got a great deal. No GM wants or is calling for: Toffoli, Carter, Kovalchuk, Quick, or Lewis. Possibly some interest in Martinez. GMs are probably asking for : JAD, Kupari, Anderson, Thomas, Petersen, or the Kings 2020 #1 pick. Maybe he could trade Kempe, but not for much. In order to trade Carter or Kovalchuk, will have to add a #2 round draft pick or add a good prospect to the deal and the return will be less than the pick or prospect needed to get rid of Carter, Kovalchuk, etc. Nothing Blake can do. It's either that, or buyout one subpar veteran each year. In this rebuild, there will be no other good hauls via trade, like the Muzzin deal....it's all going to be on drafting well and developing the prospects. On a good note, the Kings prospects are very good. Patience. I waited for 40 years for the CUP. First game, 1972, vs Les Canadiens. 3-1 Habs win...was in awe of the game and hooked...Krazy Kozak with lone King goal....then, SUDDENLY, 40 years later, a CUP! So...I can be patient and in 2 years, this team will be good again.

I could see a team taking on Kovalchuk for a playoff run as a power play asset, if the Kings retained about 50% of his cap hit, but he has to start scoring for it to happen.

Did I dream that we drafted Bjornfot AND Kaliyev? We did draft both of them right? Then why are we arguing over where they got drafted and the reasons why. We got both, who cares about anything else.

They're arguing over who's been wrong more. You're not scouts!

That is false. Teams called about Toffoli last year but Blake didn't like the offers that were coming in, so he didn't trade him. Toronto also asked about Clifford. Just because it's not out there in the public doesn't mean that teams weren't calling about those guys.

If Soupy has another stellar season leading up to the TDL...
what do you think a team that is likely to contend or is contending like maybe EDM would give for Soupy? A 2nd, maybe a 3rd? Maybe we package Soupy and Toffoli/Lewis and see what we get??

I could see the leafs interested in a rental clifford and Campbell for a 2nd and prospect However the pick would be in 2021
