Should Hawks call up Leafs with idea of taking Marleau in trade if they don't think they can land a big fish in FA?

Marleau and his 6.75M cap hit for next year is problem for them as they face cap issues this offseasn. Marleau also has a NMC but maybe Hawks can persude him to waive and sell him on us being team bouncing back with mix of youth/vets for his final year of deal

Marleau can be slotted in as 3rd line LW slot with Anisimov (If Stanley holds onto him) and Saad at RW

Wonder what price Leafs would pay for Hawks to take him off hands and clear up 6.75M

If the Leafs pay his signing bonus July 1st he will only be owed 1.25M on the season. I think the return would be lack luster compared to other potential cap dumps that are out there.

Paying his bonus means nothing because it is cap hit that is issue as well as his NMC which would prevent them from dumping him on lets say a team like Sens who would be type of team looking for a low cost player with high cap hit

1) too many eggs in one basket, its a one line team
2) Strome and Cat don't need one of the best playmakers in the NHL on there line, it would be a collosal waste of 88's skill, they need a guy with good speed, size and some skill who is not afraid of the dirty areas.
3) Kane has proven year after year he can carry his own line
4) we should be playing one possession line that can score, two actual scoring lines; the kane line and the cat/strome line one of the two will be facing easier competition and can light it up.
5) that will also leave us with a kick ass 4th, shutdown line.

Saad toews ?????
kubalik ????? kane
cat-strome ?????
kahun-kampf ????
you make a great point and in theory i like it. but the biggest problem is, as i had with the beginning of last season, the team started flat. it kinda of change with Kane went to the fist line.

the point is still need that scoring even if it is one line .... but with Strome and Cat, that is really not the problem.

Honestly, it looks like those cap dump deals where the Hawks gave players away for cap relief were unique to the Hawks. Maybe that is the cost of winning Cups. Correct me if I am forgetting deals other teams made like TT and Sharp.

Marleau should be easy to move if he’ll waive. He only has one year left and like Styles said, there is little real money owed to him. He could go to a place like Ottawa, be captain, get top line minutes and strengthen his HOF chances. But he does have a NMC and he should just stay in Toronto and see if he can win a Cup.

I think this is a good idea (and I thought I mentioned it a few weeks ago as well). The Hawks are on the up swing but they can still take advantage of their cap space for a season.

I’ve been beating this drum for a while but I would try to take on Callahan from Tampa instead. Trade the Hawks 2nd and get Callahan and 27th overall. Callahan can kill penalties and then he rolls off the books next season.

Mark Kelley has shown there are plenty of good players available at that range

Many teams have done them. The situation is timing based though, it isnt a case for teams needing it now so much because of Vegas. Vegas took some of those deals such as Smith, Clarkson but also Vegas caused the cap to rise, which put less teams in a struggle by being at the cap ceiling.

Even in the past, Reily Smith was a cap eat trade off to Florida to get rid of Marc Savard.

I would be fine with this deal as well.

The other potential with either would be that if they have a solid season the Hawks could retain and then move them at the deadline for assets if it is the right move.

I don't like idea of Hawks moving 2nd in deal taking on Callahan just to move up to late 1st round

To me its not worth it to take on Callahan's nearly 6M cap hit if only compensation Hawks get is moving up from #43 in draft to #27

Yeah, good point on Vegas. 80M in free cap coming into the league changed the game and Seattle will do the same soon. Forgot about Savard and Smith, that qualifies amongst the others.

Ryan Murray is an RFA from Columbus. Like a lot of other highly touted 2012 draft picks, he has been pretty disappointing.

Would you take a flyer on him to see if a change of scenery could rehab his game a bit?

Buy out won’t mean jack since it’s. 35+ contract but yes I believe he could sign a new FA contract with Toronto

Why would we buy it out? It is a 35 plus deal and only 1 year.
i just mean is it possible to buy out. just trying to figure out rules. maybe he agrees to waive if he knows he can sign back with toronto if a deals on the table.

dzingel better offensive stats then saad this year. hits and plays solid defense. hes a puck retriever too. hes a second liner. didnt have a great playoffs but still a very good player.

lovejoy a placeholder who can PK a bit and some veteran backup for forsling, byram and joki. also dont have to play seabrook.

yes and he would be playing a lot of first line minutes in the lineup i showed. not saying he can anchor a top 2 line but he can play on one or be the best guy on a third line. would be a 2nd PP guy too

Callahan is only on a 1 year deal left, he would be a Godsend on our 4th line to be honest..but I agree, I don't like the value on that deal overall. the 1st is nice, but we are only 8 picks away from a 1st now, I think we could maneuver something else to get Callahan plus that pick.
