Marner has outperformed Matthews both of the past two years. He is very responsible defensively now. I don’t think this is posturing. I truly think they want more than Matthews

Realize how lucky we were. We negotiated all this stuff after we had already won 2 cups, and still got 1 more in there. Teams are doing the tough negotiations now and haven’t won ****.

It probably depends on term as well. Matthews contract is only 5 years and Marner could sign for 7 or 8 years. Matthews will probably want 15 after the 5 years. Dubas would be smart to lock Marner up to the 8 year

He would have been smart to get Matthews for 8 as well lol.
I'm not entirely sold on Mathews as a franchise C ... it stems from his facial expression and thus the attitude I garner from it. I may be off but perhaps Dubas and management have a niggling feeling as well and that is whey they went with a shorter term.

I’d be very disappointed in NHL GMs if none of them offer sheet Marner. It’s almost an obligation for the rest of the league to break this Leaf team up before they get going. Or at least weaken them.

This is prime pickin’s for an offersheet too.

Someone should do it to Tampa as well. It's an option for a reason. Should be fully taken advantage of unless you know for sure you want to do business with that team later. Division rivals should target each other.

2x2 for Perlini honestly seems high. Has he even proven he’s worth $2 million for one year?
I certainly wouldn't pay him that much.
Marner is projected for 8 years and $10.1.

I don't think there is a doubt about, some team is going to offer sheet Marner...I 100% believe this now. The Leafs has no options here, they have to sign Marner to whatever number it will be (likely 11 mil) and then have to trade away other players like Kapanen or Nylander to make it work...f***ing love it.

Teams didn't have to offer sheet our guys, they knew we had to sell, Dubas f***ing lives in la la land and thinks he can keep all these guys, just not realistic here. Leafs=cap hell with no glory...

Hahaha f***ing love it.

Shit on Bowman all you want, but he got his Matthews and Marner to agree to $6 million deals, and got cups (multiple) out of them, before they went double digits

Edit: to be fair, Kane and Toews first extensions were about 11% of the cap. 11% of about $81 million would be $8.91 million. So it’s more fair to use that as the standard than the actual $6.3 million number.

But will he sign it? Listening to a podcast, the host said Marner has 9 endorsement deals and we know he is from Toronto. Maybe it is in his best interest to take a little less while staying in Toronto. While I agree he is going to get the interest, it might just be used as leverage. Plus, Dubas has said it's going to be resolved much earlier than Nylander. It's going to be great story to follow.

Friedman said on 31 Thoughts pod that he wants Matthews money, and then went into a monologue about feeling unappreciated early in your career, and being willing to leave your job for somewhere that appreciates you.

They also said the Toronto kid thing may have made Dubas think it would be easy to bring Marner back, but that it’s not actually playing that way.

I’m sure he didn’t just do that willy nilly, I’m sure that’s something Marner’s camp floated to Friedman off the record.

the will he sign it part is the question - but there are a few teams that could do this and be very attractive for Marner.

Rangers- they have the room, they have rebuilt the past 2 plus drafts, they can easily do it..Marner would be a fool to not go there where stars are treated well.

Hawks - $21 mil in cap space, Kane, Toews, Cat, Strome, Saad - after this draft we will have enough picks and prospects for the next 6-8 years - we can dump the next 4 1sts no problems...the RFA's have to be signed, but get creative there and move out AA and bank on Ottawa needing Seabs next year to come close to the floor. I would have a hard time seeing Marner not wanting to come to a team that actually has won championships this era.

Golden Knights - could they do it??? I have to see their cap situation, but dammit this is a sneaky ninja assassin team that could do it as they are loaded for right now, don't need the firsts and have a rabid market that would only go even more bat shit crazy for Marner. He would not say no team the Golden ones..

Duchene has always tempted me, and that projected price does little to make me less tempted

I wonder if you sign him to be the 2C and move Strome to wing.
I would roll three - Duchene with Saad and Perlini and have Perlini’s agent and parents call him up the first time he floats. I would double shift Duchene too.
