There's a part of me that believes this whole song and dance with Marner is some really savvy PR on Marner's part.

I don't think he has any inclination to leave Toronto at all. I think you could offer sheet him at the full 20% of the cap or whatever you're allowed to, and he'd turn it down. Because any team that could offer it is surely ****tier than Toronto as a team, organization, and hockey market.

I think he and his agent are hyping up his value and getting people to think 'he could get 11mil...he could get 12'... and then at the end of the day, he's going to take like 10-10.5, and it's going to be perceived as a 'discount' for his hometown team, and he's instantly, overnight, going to become the single most beloved Maple Leaf since Wendel Clark.

Rumor has it the cap may not be going up that much this year.

Stan needs to be careful with contracts he hands out this year. But at the same time, this is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of teams who may be in even more trouble cap wise.

yes like the Leafs.

I doubt Marner gets moved but Nylander or Kadri yes perhaps Kap or AJ.
Yeah you’re right they would be out of their minds to Marner. And since they seem to be stuck with Marleau, it seems like there will be a squeeze for one season at least

Gustafsson would be a great cheap Gardiner replacement for them. Maybe there’s a fit to take some wingers off their hands?

They might not have a choice if cap is 81mil and Marner wants 11-12...plus they need to pay Kap and the swede winger...Gus should be appealing to him at 1.2m per and gives them top notch offensive production.

10.5 looks good to me.

10.5 would be great. Imagine getting Marner for only two 1st round picks lol.

I’m fully on board with putting that
$10,568,589 offer in

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say they match easily.

Worth a shot.

If Marner accepts the offer of 10.5, it means Dubas was lowballing him. If he declines the offer, he's expecting to get more out of Dubas. Either scenario puts the Leafs in a worse situation.

It’s a pipe dream but this is a slow time of the year for us so I get the talking point.

There’s no penalty to Chicago if Toronto matches, and Toronto would end up paying more than they wanted to for Marner.

Why would Dubas thank Stan for that?

Because it’s rumored he wants Matthews money. Anything under 11 they would be happy with.

Marner has outperformed Matthews both of the past two years. He is very responsible defensively now. I don’t think this is posturing. I truly think they want more than Matthews

Realize how lucky we were. We negotiated all this stuff after we had already won 2 cups, and still got 1 more in there. Teams are doing the tough negotiations now and haven’t won shit.

The center vs wing factor has some weight in this discussion.
I've always thought though that Toronto would go with the Kane and Toews formula and pay them equal amounts and term .. but I'm probably wrong.

It does for sure but I think Marner has been the better player and he's produced more and his all around game is really good now. He was stirring the drink on every line he was on.

Panarin would be great but it will be difficult seeing him passing up chance to go to Florida

IMO too much smoke to the Panarin/Bob to Florida stuff

Would be thrilled to have him back but at this point I just have trouble seeing us beating out Panthers
