What a game.

I'll take the victory but I feel terrible for the Swedes, who had the clear edge in play. Their puck-moving was sublime, and they handled Canada's forecheck and physicality much better than they usually do. Canada's winning goal was kind of lucky to be honest (went through the defenceman's skates), and I thought Sweden could have scored another if they hadn't taken all those penalties in the third...but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I think Swedish fans should be proud of how their team played.

Call penalties for both team using the same standard. It is a novel concept, but maybe some day it will catch on.

Please post a list of these egregious calls that were missed and times so I can go back and look at them for myself. I have the game DVR'd, and since you obviously witnessed a lot of bias, I would love to confirm it.

No? All calls were deserved against the Swedes but Canada had some also which wasn't called. For example the slashing before the 3-1 goal.
Listen that was a horrible play by your player, trying to skate through 3 defending players when you have the extra man is not a smart play imo.

The reffing was not consistent.

Thank you, you came through NyQuil . I used to hang/lurked ? quite a bit in the senators forum and found you to be one of the most...likeable (for lack of a better word) guys there

The refs weren't very good in this game. The calls didn't result in a Canadian goal but it had too much of an effect on this game. Even without the refs this game was close between two good teams. Canada scored the most goals so they deserved to win. Can't claim Sweden got robbed. I just wish the refs could have taken more of a backstep.

Nice to see a tournament where our Swedish players really went for the gold. Even if we were underdogs in semi and final all captain Lias kept saying was that nothing other than gold is important. Our history before : 2 gold and 10 silver medals and happy with being underdogs. A different mentality this year for sure if you compare with most of the years going 10 years back.

Therefore it's kinda nice to sit back here and see other countries people get salty on Lias and talk about "not classy". We have silver enough here in Sweden from WJC and just don't want it anymore. I'm totally fine with a country-captain like that. I rather have that than swedish media going on with "longest win streak in group stages". Swedish hockey is good enough for a change in attitude and what keeps us satisfied and I think the team and Lias (especially in all interviews) showed us that we are moving towards that new mindset.

Great tournament except from having an outdoor-game when it reduces the quality in the hockey itself as it did. Canada as always well worthy winners in a close final game. The final game was really good but I enjoyed Finland - Canada in the group stage the most I think. Now almost a year until the best tournament starts again :(

lol that's my bias because I didn't really see any obvious penalties against Canada
The hold on Pettersson was as blatant of a penalty as it gets. The slash on Liljegren at the end should also have been called. I am glad we won but the Swedes have a reason to feel aggrieved.

3 of Sweden's penalties were so completely undisciplined they had to be called. Dahlin sticking his butt and leg out to trip a Canadian, Swede launching himself to take out a Canadian and that high slash on the Canadian with under a minute left with the score already 3-1. Take away those 3 penalties that nobody is getting away with even in the NHL and it's only a 3-1 PP advantage.

Ref'ing was fine. Sweden was just dumb on those 3 plays. In the end it was still 5 on 5 play that decided the game. Canada scored 2, Sweden scored 0.

Right, except your comment wasn't about any of that, it was about Canada celebrating winning a gold medal in a fashion (graciously) that you didn't like because the refs called more penalties on your team then they did my team, even considering those Canadian power plays did absolutely nothing for them and actually cost them a goal. But yes, refs gave this game to Canada.... Was a good game, both teams played incredible, do we have to take that away from them?
Since it's apparently impossible to understand what I write, let me simplify greatly.

TWO. SEPARATE. STATEMENTS:
1. REFS. WERE. BAD.
2. OUTCOME. OF. GREAT. GAME. WAS. FINE. BEST. GAME. I'VE. SEEN. IN. A. LONG. TIME

Outcome of game acceptable. It was a coin toss in the end.

Is that readable enough for you or do you want to continue to decide how I feel and how I reason? Or can you leave that detail for me?

Sweden's approach to defending their zone was to crowd the crease, and it worked for the most part.

Until it didn't.

So...two calls?

Did you catch the two-hander to Timmins's neck that never got called?

Where is your outrage over that?

My point is, in any given game there will be missed calls. There were some that didn't get called on the Swedes, too. But if you are dumb enough that you are going to stick your leg out five feet from the ref, or trip a guy taking the puck to the net on a clear scoring chance...guess what? Those rarely get missed.

Those of you criticizing Andersson. :help:

He's an elite athlete near the pinnacle of his profession, he'll probably reach that next season, I don't think anyone here can credibly critique him. If so, speak up with your qualifications for doing so.

Just gonna drop these gems here so they can be enjoyed once more...

Canada those weak ****ing *****es

Lol sure mate whatever floats your boat typical Canadian humility fake till you make it...

lol, no one is going to remember any Canadian player on this team. Such a forgettable tournament.

If you by "without discipline" mean Canada got away with pretty much anything while Sweden got penelties for just looking at the girls in the red jersys then yes

...and now a great post to remind us all that the vast majority of Swedish fans aren’t represented by the limited number of salt factories crying in here.

Great game, absolutely loved every minute of it and it could have gone either way. Congrats to Canada. There are different ways to lose and this time Sweden really did their best game in the tournament. Should be proud over the effort even if it didnt get them the whole way.

To me, it was pretty clear that as the game went on the referees wanted to put their whistles away and just let the teams play. Unfortunately the penalties the Swedes took in the 3rd were simply too blatant to ignore. The Dahlin, (2nd) Lindstrom, Zetterlund and Soderlund penalties are all ones I'm sure they would have like to have been able to ignore, but they were simply too blatant, and most caused too big of a shift in the play, to do so.

The reality is they were just extremely undisciplined plays.

I would trade the ref calling those missed calls for the ref not blowing his whistle when there's an active puck and costing a goal.

One team had a ref mistake directly cost a goal. The other had a couple missed penalties. Which would anybody choose in those two scenarios? Never seen so much complaining from the team who had a ref mistake have a goal disallowed from the opposing team. Its insane.

I guess in order to appease people, all games should have three calls for each team...deserved or not. Then no one can complain, because it was all even. Plus, both teams get to have four goals each. And also, everyone gets a gold medal and a hot chocolate at the end of the game, so no one has to stand on the blueline and cry.

As a former ref yourself, do you not think fans and players alike should be able to at least ask for some consistency. In the gold medal game. Of the world championships? Nothing wrong with any of the calls on Swedish playera but anyone with two eyes must have been able to see how inconsistently the calls in this game was dolled out.

Outside of the 2002 world cup, which is problematic for a number of reasons, can anyone bring to mind a World Cup final in Football where the focal point has so clearly been on the referee?

Shocking. Ranger boy defends his prospect.

That's why silver and bronze medals are routinely thrown into the stands, right?
