Today is going to be very exciting. 40th + Sekera/Russell for a RHD is my dream scenario.

If you can come away with a top 4 of:
Klefbom Larsson
Nurse RHD

You are giving your team a fantastic shot next year.

If no trade, take one of the top 9 that fall.

If none do, don't draft Hayton. Smith or Boqvist or trade down.

If we are seriously thinking of adding a d-man on 4 to 6 a year--we need to move klefbom or find a team to take Sekera or Russel with no cap retention

dunno why

but my little voice is telling me Nuge will be moved today to free up money to spend elsewhere--in a perfect world we would move Lucic, Sekrea and Russell before we move Nuge

Yeah I don't see anything happening due to constraints.
Would be weird to trade Nuge as he's currently the only 'winger' we have that is safe to score more than 20 goals next season.
We can't afford to trade the 10 or Puljujarvi for a roster player because we simply don't have the cap space to add any salary at all.
We can't move Lucic, Sekera or Russell because they all have NMC. Even if Lucic waived, nobody wants his contract. Even if Sekera waived, nobody wants a player his age coming off his injury at his cap hit, and Russell only wants to be in Alberta.

The only scenario that makes sense is Klefbom for a right shot D

Dude's been a laughingstock for like 12 years and still going with it. He sucks, but credit for sticking to his guns, no matter how hilarious they are.

I know certain parties do not like it when we discuss eksucks--but from my position--what gave the name "eklund" cred was during the lost year when the site was run by the NHLPA--for those who forget--that is who started hockeybuzz and it started to give the internet a view of how the NHLPA wanted things done and to get their story out. When we signed the CBA on June 14th or 15th --the nhlpa took a step back from the site and completely relinquished involvement a few months later. My understanding is that the person now known as Eksucks is not the same person who was first known as Eksucks when the NHLPA was involved--the current guy was either a programmer or webmaster and he took over the persona when the NHLPA walked away--so the on line persona of Eksucks is sort of Dread Pirate Roberts thing

Wouldn't care too much with the moving of Russell, but I don't want the Oilers to move Sekera.

First off, with him having his leg problems and a horrendous 17-18 season, along with his contract I don't think there will be much of a return for him. We have to stop selling guys at their low. It has literally crippled us the last few years.

When he is on his game he is currently our best d man. I think with a summer off to get back to form he will be very effective for us next year.

Probably, but it shouldn’t. Smith is a very good prospect.

Maybe I’m just low on Smith, but isn’t he more of what we already have a thousand of? A number 4-6 two way d? We have like 10 versions of him in Klefbom, Benning, Bear, Possibly even Jones. We need a power play specialist, I’d rather get it with that pick via trade, cause we need it now, but if Boqvist is available you take him

I'm genuinely scared about today. What can chiapet do to ruin the team this time? Hold me
It's a pretty simple formula.

Take one of the best or the best player on the team + Contact New Jersey Devils or New York Islanders + Bend over + Hold press conference immediately afterward + Say nothing + Don't show face again until trade deadline + Say nothing and do nothing + Hold end of year presser + Say it's a re-tooling year and no one expected to make a push this year + Blame players and coaches and not yourself + Keep job = Chiapedo.

The knock on Smith is that he can't stop a cycle even in the WHL. He's a little weak, they say. Button said his comparable is Ryan Murray. But Ryan Murray never came close to Smith's offensive output. Maybe Smith's closer comparable is Faulk?

There is a part of me that is wondering is a RH OFD/QB a need or a want. Yes, it offers a lot of quick and easy solutions, but could better schemes also solve the problem?

I mean look at Winnepeg, all their main shooters are RH, but they don't have a LHD on the PP. Instead they just ran the PP through Wheeler or Scheifle on the RW side. NJ did the same, with Hall QB'ing play from the LW side.

If the Oil swapped McDavid over to the LW side, and put RNH or Sekera plus a RH body in front of the net would that not accomplish the same design? (Vanek or Simmonds would be the ideal, but you could make it work with Strome or Kassian I'd bet).

Kassian-Draisaitl-RNH
McDavid-Klefbom

Or...

McDavid-Strome-Draisatl
Sekera-Klefbom

That leaves a second unit of...

Slepy/Aberg-RNH-Lucic
Puljujarvi-Benning

Suddenly the PP doesn't look like such a cluster****, and you didn't need to spend anything to fix it.

I would imagine if the Oilers do not have a satisfactory record even 15-20 games into the season, TM and Chia are gone. This is really their last chance, in my opinion.

I wonder how much young Katz has grown this year? These are the things I wake up and think about on draft day.

I know many are down on Faulk, but I'd still be very please if we could get him. I think he just needs a change of scenery

Insiders share thoughts headed into NHL draft weekend

Elliotte Friedman on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960, on the likelihood of the Oilers’ moving their no. 10 overall pick for “the names we keep hearing” like a Justin Faulk, Tyson Barrie, Colton Parayko, or the like:

“Peter Chiarelli did say again yesterday that if there’s an established defenseman there that makes sense he would do it,” noted Friedman. “And the one thing about Peter is I remember in his first draft when he traded the pick for Griffin Reinhart, I remember because there were a lot of rumors about Cam Talbot at the time too, he said, ‘I’m not trading our first-round pick for a goalie, but I might consider doing it for a defenseman.’ So when he says that, I have no reason not to believe him.

“I’d be surprised if it was Faulk, to be honest.

“The thing about Parayko is I’ve got to think that is a guy that Edmonton would do it for, I just can’t imagine St. Louis is doing it for only the 10th pick. I’ve heard there’s been a few teams that have called St. Louis about Parayko. I mean, that guy is a terrific player, he’s got a great contract. I can’t see it being Parayko for 10, I’ve got to think it’s got to be a lot more than that. But I do think he’s the kind of guy Edmonton is in.

“I think one of the things that’s interesting about it too is we’ve talked about Lucic. Yesterday Peter said he expects Lucic to come back and be motivated for the start of next year. I kind of wonder if they look at a guy like Parayko not only because he’s a hell of a player, but because I think Lucic has been frustrated a bit by the intensity and playing in Canada. I don’t think that kid is going to be bothered by it. If you’ve ever dealt with him, he’s a really good guy to deal with. He seems very happy.

“I think Edmonton wants somebody who could probably come back and handle the cauldron like that, and he strikes me as a guy who can do it.”

Those that are low on Smith typically are bagging on two things - lack of strength/physicality in his own zone and his shot isn’t great. Both of those things can be taught and worked on. He’s got a great brain and skates very well - very cerebral player
