HABS trade Pacioretty and their own 2nd to Florida for Matheson and FLA's first pick and select either Kotakiemi or Valeno

I like that trade.

I totally got that. I was trying to move the argument forward (moving away from the GDT) by asking about your take between Zadina and Tkachuk, but given Mrb1p's post about how Tkachuk is viewed by all posters in this thread, I've gotten my answer.

Ok, my bad buddy.

We've had a this conversation a few times. WTK summed it up nicely a few times in the thread and in other threads.

It basically all comes down to how you value pure offensive skill and top pairing defensemen vs a playmaking winger. That and the lack of high end production. Tkachuk was invisible in the post-season as well.

I mean, one thing that stood out from Tkachuk during the WJC was that he's likely NHL ready soon. He's big and strong enough to handle men and he really is a good playmaker. What makes him ready is how quick he finds the open man and how he positions himself on offense. He could already cycle and be a net presence next year probably.

But, you honestly just need to watch any of Zadina's WJC games to see that this guys offensive awareness is special. You could likely show a game to a non-hockey fan and he'd notice he has an uncanny ability to get the puck and get himself in scoring positions, by any means he can find.

No, I mean, jabronis in this thread are just not ready to admit Jesperi is that good yet.

*Ahem*

What more does Kotkaniemi need to do to be at least an option in the top 5/6 ? Barring that he becomes a winger of course.

He produced against men and significantly improved his speed. He has size and let's assume he'll be a center, he has the vision, the shooting, the hands and the unpredictability to be a 60+ point center.

That's as valuable an asset as you can draft.

If our scouts really like Kotkaniemi they may as well take him at number 3. I have zero confidence he'll make it to any of the most likely trade down options ( even the Oilers at #10) . He'll be long gone by the Florida pick.

Here's the group of players I feel don't have much separation between:

Boqvist
Wahlstrom
Zadina
Kotkaniemi

Dobson
Bouchard
Hughes
Kravtsov

I'm re-adding Bouchard, because rewatching some games confirmed my suspicions that his ice time had an effect on his compete (I've seen most of his games from january on). Some of his first periods were downright dominant both ways, but there's a pattern of lower and lower performance as the games progressed. Disapointing playoffs though.

Personally, I also think there's a bit of a separation between the first four and the next four in that group, which is why I added a small space before Dobson.

Then there's a next group of:
Tkachuk
Smith
Farabee
Shafigullin
Berggren

Who could all become high end players, but all have certain concerns that drop them from the first group. After this group is also where I feel there's a clear drop of high end skill.

Thomas would be at the fringe of this group and the next, along with Denisenko/Kaut/Lundkvist. At that point, I think most of our lists are probably interchangeable up to around spot 45.

1. Dahlin
2. Svechnikov
3. Boqvist ,Wahlstrom ,Zadina
4. Dobson , Hughes , Kotkaniemi

I really like Boqvist and i am no sure who's the best between Whalstrom and Zadina . I think that Whalstrom would be my choice because he's more versatile offensively

I could see something like happening...but I'd want more from the panthers.

Kotkaniemi def will be there at 7..maybe even wahlstrom who plays c/lw

Canucks offer #7oa + 2nd + roster player (sutter/baerstchi/hutton) for #3oa

As mentioned by others, if they really want the center (Kotkaniemi i'm assuming) then try to get another high pick and trade down to where you think he may be available. This may backfire if he gets picked before, but there should be some good players available at 6 or 7 regardless. Otherwise, just pick Zadina. I think he has 40 goal upside and can really bolster our offense if we can find him a center to pass him the puck. If we had a crystal ball and knew we could draft Hughes next year, then it would make the decision much easier :thumbu:

Haven't followed Halifax. Who's his center?

I know it's wishful thinking but i still have a feeling were gonna end up with Svechnikov. Be it either Carolina picking Zadina at #2 or us moving up to get Svechnikov with our 2nds or prospect, i have a feeling Carolina's target is Zadina cus he has great chemistry with Necas and Carolina hasn't picked a Russian since 2001.

So, in essence, Zadina drove the play himself most of the time? Meaning, he doesn't need a catalyst (like Drouin needed)?

He's part of a high scoring team. His center isn't a talented guy at the next level but he did score at the junior level.

Zadina will absolutely need a playmaking C to help him reach his full impact. He's not Svechnikov who can create on his own.
