I am shocked that the Bob cast hasn't been discussed yet. He spoke about 45 mins on the draft and the consensus rankings and about several mins on the Habs.

Some things he said:

He talked with 10 scouts of which 8 are in charge of the draft for their teams.
Clear # 1 and #2 but Zadina and Tkachuk are now mixed with the 4 defensemen (Dobson, Hughes, Bouchard, Boqvist) and now Kotkaniemi. It is wide open after #2.
Kotkaniemi was ranked a top 5 pick for several teams now. Says it is not a stretch at all to see Montreal take him #3.
Hayton would be a stretch at #3 but not a few picks later.
Dobson the concensus #2 defenseman
Merkley all over the map. One team has him lowest at 16 and the furthest ranked was in the 3rd round. Said most had him as a 1st round talent but rank him at the end of the 1st.

There was more but I forget. I would say it is more and more likely that Kotkaniemi will be a Hab or they drop a few spots and take Hayton or a d-man.

oh yeah. His list will be 93 players and all of them were listed in the top 90 by at least 3 scouts each. It should be a solid list.

Bought the blackbook from HP.

It's excellent.

The Kovalenko scouting report, as an example, is right on point.

Well, who'd a thunk it :sarcasm:

Not BobbyMac, based on his last ranking from April 27th, where he had Kotkaniemi ranked 10th and wrote:

And while there was a little bit of separation between those three and Hughes at No. 9, understand one thing about this year’s draft: Based on our survey, there is a huge drop off in consensus after No. 9.

Kotkaniemi, though he was just one spot below Hughes, didn’t receive anywhere close to the same support.
Kotkaniemi is closer to being an interchangeable part with the next three prospects, ranked Nos. 11 through 13.

It's amazing how many publications release their final rankings before the hockey season is actually over (and before players have been officially measured at the combine). Things can change in a hurry.

I guess that's why he doesn't release his final rankings in April. :sarcasm:

For me pick # 3 should be bpa... and with all the video and stats that I saw about Zadina and Kotka is not even close... Zadina at 3 easily. Better shot, better stickhandling , better skating ...

At 13-14 years old Zadina got 24g 37pts in 24gp again 16 years old.

At 13-14 years old Zadina got 9g 19pts in 27gp again 18 years old.

At 14-15 years old Zadina got 18g 34pts in 11gp again 16 years old.

At 14-15 years old Zadina got 21g 34pts in 20gp again 18 years old.

At 14-15 years old Zadina got 4g 6pts in 6gp again 20 years old.

Etc etc etc

A goal scorer is a goal scorer!

I hope we dont pick the wrong guys!

Go habs Go

You wouldn't expect to see such definitive language being used on April 27th and only a month and a half later, now his list is leaning on Kotkaniemi moving to the 5th slot and he surmises that he may even move into the top 3?

Who are these scouts he consulted for his April 27th piece? How could the final list be so different with such little time having passed? Did Kotkaniemi do anything during the last month and a half to see his stock raise so much?

Whatever he did, it pales in comparison with several posters in this thread who have had Kotkaniemi for the 3OA slot for quite some time now, way before these new quotes by BobbyMac.

U18 mainly, where he dominated and showed the world he was a C.

Couplee with poor showings by Tkakchuk, Zadina

Oh and the combine, which is pretty huge.

How did he do as a seventeen year old in a professional men's league? Top three on his team in scoring?

How much points would Kotkaniemi have had in the CHL ?

I believe he would have had stats similar to Cody Glass last year. Would that make give him more credebility at 3 ? lol

It was published April 27, but when did he actually get the input from all the scouts? It could have been 2 or 3 weeks (or more) earlier. Then, like Mrb1p said, he had a strong showing as a centre at the U18 (after playing wing as a rookie pro), while others had less impressive playoffs as wingers. It seems Dobson has also raised substantially in the rankings, I'm assuming because of his strong play in the playoffs and Memorial Cup.

Things change over time. Once drafted, players ratings will continue to rise and fall too.
