We should absolutely do that, even if all we get back is their 2nd next year

Arizona can jump Ottawa and take Zadina, then Ottawa can take Tkachuk, then we take Kotkaniemi or Dobson at 5 and everyone is happy.

And Kotkaniemi is bound to be there at 5.

Actually could probably still be on the table at 10.

But at the same time, even though I think Zadina is clear cut at 3, between 3-10, quality of prospects seems to be very similar.

So, per se, no ones really a reach or falling between those picks.

Kotkaniemi could be available at 11, if he's not then a dman like Hughes or Bouchard would have dropped. Personally i have it as:

1) Dahlin
2) Svechnikov
3) Zadina
4) Dobson
5) Boqvist/Tkachuk
6) Boqvist/Tkachuk
7) Wahlstrom/Kotkaniemi
8) Wahlstrom/Kotkaniemi
9) Smith (he's ranked lower on other lists tho)
10) Hughes/Bouchard
11) Hughes/Bouchard
12) Farabee

That's why i'd trade the #3 pick for #11 + #12 + #43 (isles picks), you're bound to end up with 2 studs.

You also call Chicago and try to get their pick straight up for an extended Pacioretty, he's the perfect winger for that team and he'd be a low caphit for them next season. With Toews and Kane getting that much money (while still in their prime) they could seriously consider moving a future piece in order to be a contender next season.

So, since Brady Tkachuk is taking the college route, won’t there be some hesitation by some teams to take him due to the college free-agency loop-hole?

What a disaster if he didn’t want to play for the Habs, so he just sticks it out for one year at Boston.
Rarely happens with first rounders.

Whose faster, Kotkaniemi or Poehling?

My wildest guess is they are similar. Poehling is a better overall skater but Kotkaniemi just looks awkward at times. He still gets the job done and doesn't look out of place when trying to create offensive plays on the rush.

Youtube Kotkaniemi... there is plenty of video to watch

I got Kotkaniemi being taken at 6th, 8th, 11th, or 12th. I'd be surprised if the Sens, Coyetes, Canucks, Rangers, and Oilers take him over the other talent in the top 10 and based on what they already have. Wings, Blackhawks, Habs took him out to dinner... Use this info as you wish but it means they are interested.

I previously thought Kotkaniemi would be there from 10-15 but there is so much talk about him and he is peaking later in his draft year. I think he goes in the top 10 for sure. If the Habs don't take him, I'm willing to bet either the Wings or Blackhawks take him.

Thus Habs trade Pacioretty to Chicago for their pick and draft Kotkaniemi? ;)

Wings are gonna take a dman imo, probably Dobson or Boqvist.

I can't shake the feeling that Ty Smith would be an amazing partner for Weber tho.. i wouldn't mind moving #3 for #11 + #12 + 2nd rounder and picking 2 of Smith/Hughes/Bouchard/Farabee.

Smith - Weber
Hughes - Petry
Mete - Juulsen

We went from having smurf forwards to having smurf LHDs

I would love to know what the Blackhawks plans are. But they have not drafted a top rated center in many years now. If Kotkaniemi is available at 8, they take him IMO. Not sure if they are willing to move the pick for Patch straight up. They do need scoring on the wing though.

Wings need everything in their prospect. I think they are unpredictable. Kotkaniemi is an option for them but like you said, so is Dobson and Boqvist. They need help everywhere.

I was looking at Smith the other day. I just worry about the smaller sized defenseman. I know the game is build around skating but I think people don't really see that it's a combo of all 3.. Skating/Skill/Size. Not saying I don't like Smith but I can see him dropping a bit due to lack of size. My targets are guys who have all 3 assets. I really like Dobson a lot!

If the Habs run out of options this summer... I'd sign Emelin again for a 2 or 3 year team friendly deal. I think he is an option with Weber. Those two together can shut you down and they help Price be Price. Wish Mete was more of a scoring threat. He is an awesome skater and fits well with Petry.

Emelin / Weber (Shut down pairing 5/5)
Mete / Petry (Offensive paring)
Alzner / Juulsen (Good 3rd pairing)

It's not a back end to brag about but it's way better defensibly than last season. Price needs a solid team defense for him to do his thing.

Who here would put Galchenyuk in play for another top 10 pick ?
Maybe with next year's crop.

I just think when we start moving players from our young core, we stop making progress and just end up going sideways. I'd put Gallagher up for a top 10 pick this year though.

Well Smith is small but not super small, he's 5-10.75, 176.1 pounds (combine results). He'll probably be 5'11+ 190+ pounds when he's NHL ready. He's very underrated defensively (could handle the tough minutes with Weber) and he's a great skater/puck mover.

Yeah, I think Gallagher could get one back.

Weber, too.

But if MB's trading Galchy (he probably is), would you rather a top pick this year or a roster player ?

I know. But think about how many impact defenseman are below 6'-0"? It's rare! Not saying he is a bad pick but he can be targeted in our own end. Escaping pressure with skating is not always accomplishable . Sometimes when the competition is high and there is less time and space, you got to be able to win puck battles along the boards.

Personally, I prefer big defenseman who can skate and have offensive skills. Offense is good but how you play in your own end is more important. We already have Mete. I don't want two sub 6'-0" guys on our back end.

I'd be OK with Smith but one of Smith or Mete would have to go. No way I want both in our line-up down the road.

Who here would put Galchenyuk in play for another top 10 pick ?

Well, we could really go all-in, rebuild-wise, by trading both Pacioretty and Galchenyuk for top picks. But honestly, the more I think about it, I'd prefer 2019 1st-rounder for them, or at least one of them. Next year is THE year for centers, and since I don't expect us to have a great season this year, we could reap huge benefits in that draft too.

Our lineup would be VERY young this year though, but at least now we have people in place who can teach them properly...

Drouin - Stastny ? - Gallagher
Lehkonen - Danault - Scherbak
Hudon - DLR - Shaw
Whoever on the 4th line, but I guess Rychel and McCarron could be there.

CDH/Johnson ? - Weber
Reilly/Mete - Petry
A mix of whoever's left, but I hope Valiyev and Lernout sticks.

Price
Niemi/Lindgren

We could probably add our 1st rounder this year, and who knows, perhaps Evans/Vejdemo if they impress enough.

BUT...

Let's not forget MB is in place, and Molson is pressuring him for a playoffs appearance.

So I think we can forget these scenarios. (still wish Pacioretty traded, for his own sake, and our own)

Who here would put Galchenyuk in play for another top 10 pick ?

I'd like to see Galchenyuk for one more year at age 24/25. He is just touching his prime years now. We could be making a huge mistake trading him. The minute this kid plays with a talented top 6 and less pressure, he makes us look like idiots for trading him.

Galchenyuk is part of my future. I just hate the 3 year deal we gave him.

Those are possibilities, indeed.

This draft is weird, 1-2 are pretty much set in stone, then potential drops a bit, but for many picks after, quality is essentially similar.

Does Chytil count as a roster player? Probably the top pick.

Probably Kotkaniemi but it's hard to judge, that said Poehling is a pretty good skater too. Kotkaniemi has good speed but his skating is messy.

When you say messy do you mean Marc Bergevin messy thinking or a HF poster messy thinking?

Trading Galchenyuk for a 1st rounder is such a bad management of your assets. Guy is not even 25 yet, why would they trade him, hes pretty much going to be in his prime when new prospects are going to be up to compete.

Absolutely, and he had a very good 2nd half of season, finally managed to come back into the good graces of Julien, or so it appeared.

But for some reasons, not sure MB is that fond of him.

I want Pacioretty traded 10/10 before him, but I prepare myself for Chucky's departure, just in case.
