Playing devil's advocate, what if what McCagg wrote in THN, reflects what the Habs will do? It certainly wouldn't be the first time that McCagg posts choices that are aligned with Timmins's list. With that in mind, here is what THN's Top 10 looks like, courtesy of H30:

McCagg doesn't contribute to the THN list anymore. That is Ryan Kennedy's list.

I like Dobson, and won't be upset at all if we took him. I would be disappointed though and nothing against him. It's just that the past year sucked so bad, I guess I was just wanting more. Too bad there weren't 5 generational players this year but I guess then the word generation loses some muster.
Hey who knows, maybe we get lucky and the Canes take Zadina or Tkachuk. Regarding Dobson, he isn't an electrifying talent, but in the longterm, he will be a guy you look back on and very happy with.

I know a lot of people here don't like the option of selecting Veleno. Also, I know some people who think he is undervalued and he has upside to be a good two-way center.

Can you tell me why he would be, or not be, a good option if the Habs trade for a top 15 picks this year for him? Shot? Attitude? Upside? Thanks for your inputs.

He does everything quite well, but not enough upside for me. To me there are a good 20-25 players I would take ahead of him. I'll be hoping he gets picked by someone else.

My two cents. Veleno has no hands. Can't score goals at the junior level ( or under 18's that I watched), so likely will not score at the NHL level. Do I hate him, no. Hard worker, decent skill level, good skater. 3rd line center. Throw in some physicality and he is Eller. I see him dropping to late teens/early twenties. Doesn't fill in any need for the Habs since he won't be a top 1 or 2 center. Habs have way too many 3rd & 4th liners, and that's one of the reasons they are drafting where they are. They need to draft players with higher ceilings.

Both Veleno and Eller have a really goos set of hands

I don't really like him. Some of his tools are quite nice: he's a big kid and a great skater, with a decent pair of mitts, and some playmaking ability. But I just don't think he's got it between the ears to be a real dangerous player offensively in the NHL. His U18s were borderline embarrassing. Feckless, in a word.

Thanks for letting me know. I didn't have access to the hard copy and I wrongly attributed it.

I wonder how many in the Habs fanbase would like this pick after the borefest that has become Habs hockey the past few seasons? I don't know much about these players and if many here think Dobson would be a good pick @ 3 I'll take their word for it and be fine with it.

It seems though that the Habs fanbase are growing tired of the ongoing boring style and they just need a player to get excited about again so I wonder how a perceived safe player will go over at the beginning before casual fans see how good that player really becomes.

Question for members here who follow these draft eligible players closely. Is there even that "exciting" player in this draft that would be available for the Habs when they pick 3rd with Dahlin and likely Svechnikov off the board?

Dobson isn't boring potential-wise, but his playstyle isn't overly exciting. I'm sure they'll get over it, as I'd say his rushes are more exciting than Zadina and Wahlstrom showing up for a few seconds each shift to get a shot off.

Quick question:

Can we trade a player we just picked during the draft? For example, if we picked Zadina at 3rd, and them when NYI 11 & 12 come along, and we like who is on the board, could we trade Zadina for NYI’s picks?

Well, it works on NHL18 so I don't see why it shouldn't be like in real life :sarcasm:

Exciting? I guess that would describe Hughes to a T. But I find Zadina, Kotkaniemi, Wahlstrom, Dobson, Hughes, and Boqvist to be a lot of fun to watch, too. Maybe Wahlstrom or Dobson are the least ''exciting'' players to watch from this group, but with Wahlstrom, you know that every shot he takes has a good chance of going in. Dobson's more exciting for a prospect nerd than in an absolute sense. It's more that having a kid that big, and that fast, and that smart on your team is an exciting proposition. Kotkaniemi is very creative offensively, and extremely feisty. You'll see him take on two opposing players in puck battles and win. It doesn't matter if you knock him down, he won't stop fighting for the puck. He got an assist this way at the U18s, against team Russia.

Rules? Which is what I am asking about. I can’t remember it ever happening at a draft.

I don’t think there is any rule preventing you from doing that but it wouldn’t be ethical IMO to announce a kid’s name, have him walk to the podium, have him wear your jersey, then trade him 15 minutes later.

I mean, I guess if I was an a$$ of a GM, sure, I could do it, but it’d be a stupid move IMO and I am sure won’t impress other GMs let alone prospects. You’ll also make your scouts look like idiots.

Every scout likes multiple players and if there is somebody you like, you may try risking a swap of picks, but end of the day, if management aren’t sure by draft day who they like with their first round pick and are concerned about buyer’s remorse, maybe they aren’t suited for the job.

I don't think it would be as easy to select Tkachuk at 3rd OA with the other options at that slot and with how so many sources are giving the edge to Zadina at that slot. Now, granted, that doesn't necessarily reflect what the Habs's list looks like, however, it's more likely than not that Zadina is ahead for most teams drawing lists. We'll have to wait for BobbyMac's list, I guess.

I wouldn't do it but Tkachuk is slated to go around 3rd so when you have Churla/MB it's certainly a possibility. I expect the worst so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's the pick.

Happens all the time in the NBA

Trading a player just drafter during the draft makes sense from a risk perspective. You don’t want to trade your 3rd for the 11th & 12th HOPING that other teams don’t pick the players you want. But, if they are still on the board, and the other team wants what you picked, I don’t see why not.

I could see the NHL making a rule about it, as it could become a gong show. I remember them once getting upset at the amount of trades going down during the draft.

Yeah, I’m not trying to say to not do it, though I personally wouldn’t. As far as I know, nothing is preventing a GM from calling another to make a deal after picking the player.
