Why does it have to be a defenceman that 'QB's a powerplay? On many teams, its the team's best forward that serves that role (McDavid, Kane and Matthews). On other teams, its a forward that serves as the "cannon" ( Ovechkin, Stamkos and Laine). On some teams, the powerplay features a defenceman with a heavy intimidating shot (Weber, Subban and Souray). There is no set pattern for a successful power play as each team designs their power play to take advantage of the strengths of their particular players. But the one thing that all successful power plays require is a puck transporter who can consistently gain possession of the puck in the offensive zone. Without that particular talent, no power play will ever be successful. Hughes will provide any team that drafts him with this essential element. Whether he has a great shot or not is largely irrelevant. That won't be his role. McDavid does not possess a particularly hard shot. Does that make him less dangerous? Montreal invested millions in Weber. Let him shoot the puck.
