I think Kravstov has “best player on an elite team” potential

That’s the best way I can put it

Very well put. He is the most talented player we have in the system. He’ll be next to Zibanejad on the top line in 2020.

Can we please stop the whole Kravstov vs. Whalstrom debate already and just concentrate on the prospect who is NYR property? I know the fanbase has PTSD from years of questionable picks and we always have to defend ourselves as Rangers fans because of generalizations that are years old "oh Rangers don't draft well" blah blah Dale Rolfe balh blah.

As fans we've experienced a decade of one trip to the SCF, two ECFs, a President's Trophy, and two Division titles. That was pretty darn good. This kid is pretty dynamic and might very well be part of something special soon.

I don't think so. Look at who this board (myself included) wanted on that night. I remember texting @Inferno when the Rangers were up and he and I were both freaking out that Wahlstrom was available. We thought for once we weren't going to FUBAR an easy decision. Then we did (or so we thought). Most of the board did as well, sans a few people.

Considering that Wahlstrom was the obvious pick by our armchair scouts, the paid scouts saw something different and went with Kravtsov and even though it is very early, it appears that the armchair scouts couldn't have been more wrong. I don't believe this will die any time soon. Also, the ribbing we took from Islanders fans makes it kind of hard to not celebrate this turn of events thus far.

It is a good reminder that sometimes what seems like the obvious decision, may not be the right decision. When we shy away from the norm and it doesn't work out, it doesn't mean it was the wrong move as there is more information available than we are privy to.

It's all tongue in cheek. A response to the constant comparison which won't end any time soon.

Bingo.

Getting a bit more excited about this guy

I have to ask. I'm afraid to ask. But I have to ask. Why do you have an Islander in your avatar? :skeptic:

You don’t want to know.

Seriously the conversation that led to him changing his avatar is Marc Staal levels of bad.

I remember feeling like a loner as a fan of the pick on draft night. I was ecstatic! I even yelled "oh yeah" at the Blues fan sitting next to me. He's the kid I wanted. Almost 6 months later I'm happy to see more people "joining the dark side" so to speak. I like to think my promotion of the kid with his stats has something to do with it but Alex Nunn on Twitter has been more influential regarding this. His quick editing skills, uploading videos mere seconds after it happened to Twitter gave a lot of fans a source to follow Kravtsov, even if it's only highlights.

I was the only guy at the draft party who was happy lol

Which, in a nutshell, explains why we are sitting on the couch and other guys are running the team.

"Armchair scouts" are typically basing their opinions on what the media scouts have been reporting, but if you want to talk about the consensus opinion of all scouts... unfortunately we fans have around 10% of the information to figure out what that is. I've mentioned this before... the media scouts and fan scouts are VASTLY outnumbered by the professional scouts that are employed by teams. Basically, just saying that media scout opinions need to be taken as more of a loose guide than they usually are by fans.

I was the only Rangers fan as the draft who wasn't disappointed  even spoke to some on my way to the bathroom but the negativity was too much. My favorite was "we passed on a star to pick a player I never even heard of".

Yeah, if you guarantee Wahlstrom is a sure fire star and you never heard of Kravtsov, I don't really care about your opinion, sorry.

I was a little surprised at first, but hardly disappointed. I had to explain to my Ranger-loving family members why this was a bold pick. Look at the conversations leading up to the draft. People were asking what would be the Rangers off-the-board pick, and I kept saying that I wouldn’t be shocked if Kravtsov was the pick. It was obvious the Rangers had interest, but I thought they would try to trade up with one of the later 1sts to get him. I am very thrilled with our 1st round overall.

I mean, I wanted Wahlstrom a lot. From all accounts the Rangers also liked him a lot. However, I knew that Kravtsov had that "high ceiling highly skilled boom potential" so I wasn't devastated when he was picked. It seems most people agreed that Kravtsov was one of the most skilled players in the draft but since he had questions about his consistency etc he was considered a bit more likely to be a lower pick. Again though, it was obvious they at least swung for the fence with him rather than playing it safe and skipping Wahlstrom for a low ceiling player.

I think it's probably too early to be saying one guy is a bust and the other an elite player, Wahlstrom will probably be fine. Part of me is of course rooting against him now since he's an Islander but that's how sports go.

Haha I remember our chat convo. I was going nuts.

The Miller pick went much better tho. I just didn't think it was worth the price we paid to trade up for him.

Looks like 0 for 2 on that one lol.

Hey btw, I was talking to @Amazing Kreiderman about maybe meeting up for the 2019 draft in Vancouver....any interest @Gardner McKay ?

Watching Dobson in this super series and he looks slow as **** not for nothing
He was great in the memorial cup, but even before the draft I saw people thinking his ceiling was a second pairing guy. Also on the topic of questioning other guys from the 2018 draft: if I’m remembering this right, in the CHL prospects showcase, Zadina was towards the bottom in a bunch of the skating tests

I was also thrilled when we grabbed Miller. If the rumors were true then Anaheim was going to take him and with how he looks so far, not a bad price.

I would love to go to Vancouver for the draft but that is unlikely as I have a few trips planned in the months before the draft.

I was hoping we'd trade into the teens to grab kravtsov.
This is what I wanted as well. Was hoping they could take Wahlstrom at 9 and then sneak in to grab Kravtsov at some point over the next 5 picks. I differed from you, however, because I wanted Wahlstrom as the consensus pick and Kravtsov as the homerun selection, so when they just went ahead and took Kravtsov, I was fine with it, figuring they probably hadn't been able to work out a deal to take them both.

Honestly, as we watch the results play out now a few months later, I'm more and more thrilled with the draft – except for Lindbom. Man, I was so ready to cheer with Wilde/Drury/Thomas still on the board...
