As expected, all the top UFAs for next year will start coming off the market.

OEL and now Doughty expected to sign 8 year extensions.

Money talks, and Benning has made it clear he has no idea what it's worth. If I were an agent looking for an unjustified payday for my client, I'd call him too.

Sure it does. But you still have guys like De Haan who should be able to get good offers from other teams contacting Benning.

The more the merrier- we aren't likely going to get any of them next summer anyways. The less there is available, the better potential return on Edler at the deadline if we can get him to waive.

This is just a gut feeling, but I think they've looked at the #2 center market and realized it's overpriced guys or guys that have no interest in playing here and - wow, look! - we've got a 20-goal center on the roster in Sutter! And he can cover Pettersson defensively!

But if Sutter is doing that, we need a checking center. So I think there's a good chance we'll see Beagle as the #3 center, not the #4.

Pure speculation and a gut feeling based on how this group tends to do things, plus the various rumours/non-rumours we're hearing.

Well I agree on the first part - what I seem to think the majority of people seem to forget (yourself included) is that in order to get anyone to come to what is going to be a bottom 5 team we are going to have to overpay (which is exactly what free agency is about - players that have earned the right at this point in their careers to make as much money as they can while choosing their destination).

I think anyone with a tiny bit of common sense (cue the Benning jokes) could realize Sutter is not a #2. Barring a trade or gross overpayment and term we don't have a ton of options other than hoping that we can put a band aid over the #2 center position with either Gagner, Granlund or Gaudette until hopefully EP develops into that role. (I have high hopes Gaudette can eventually get their as well but that's a few seasons away I think). Which probably is the best move.........assuming that EP eventually can step into that role......

Yep, but mostly it's that UFA is not a feasible way to acquire top talent/build a team as barely any impact players become FA's. There were a few on the board who said "let's have lots of cap space ready for next year's FA class", when really it should be "keep cap space for contract extensions for our good young players"

Yikes, never noticed the term and AAV we'll be signing Beagle at. I take it back. Ugly, ugly, ugly.

Potentially 4 years of him? Until he's 37? Absolutely terrible.

I’m surprised that there hasn’t been any rumours about edler. To me he seems like a guy who doesn’t want to move around. If he’s not getting a contract from Vancouver then I am surprised that he hasn’t been given permission to seek a trade as he would want to have prelim contract discussions if he were to waive. He’s Eligible to sign on July 1.

Not sure I seen him as a tdl rental given his personality. If he’s going to go, seems best to move him in the next week.

Who knows behind closed doors. My guess would be that he's hopeful that Vancouver wants him back- possibly be like Burrows and accept a trade to a contender for a chance at a cup and then come back as a UFA next summer.

And here I thought Benning was learning. Trevor I know has no clue how to do his job. Three years lol

I guess you really can’t teach an old Jim new tricks :dd:

What we SHOULD be doing is prying Nylander out of Toronto.

Matt Martin (Cap dump) (saves us signing reaves etc)
Nylander
Leivo (Babcock won't play him)

For

Tanev
Goldobin
2020 3rd

Then you sign Calvin De Haan

Then you have 2 duos

Bo-Boes
Pettersson-Nylander

I'm sure Eriksson got other good offers as well, but there's good, and then there's absurdly good.

Well that’s what agents sorta do, right? Get as many teams involved as possible, drive up the offers, pick from the best.

Also, why shouldn't Gaudette be expected to come in and produce right away? The last 4 Hobey Baker winners before him did. A guy like Kerfoot did.

The guy is 22. Guys who are going to make it come in at his age and play. If he comes into camp and struggles, fine, stick Gagner there. But the expectation should be that it's likely this player can come in and produce in soft 2nd line minutes.

Again, it's like everyone - the organization and fans - is in love with listing off names in the prospect pool but absolutely terrified about assigning any actual expectations to them or putting them on the actual roster.

Agree 100%

Let Gaudette start the season as the second line C. If he makes mistakes who cares, be patient, he will learn and get better and by mid season we may have a legitimate 2nd line Center.

Which is why it should be left alone. Tank for 1C.

I'm against tanking as a strategy. It allows the team to half ass it. Canucks are in need of a serious shake up everywhere and now is the time to do it. Anyway, Horvat is Canucks' new 1C, they just don't realize it yet. Second line centers are easier to find without risking toxic backlash.

If Benning is simply trying to replicate the early roster of 2017 this is all good. Dorsett wasn't a goon. A hockey player that works and doesn't accept any poo is the ideal addition. Canucks have some skinny kids coming in and simply need to offset that. I think they should search out young players for these roles, though and not simply hire an old guy to try. Remember they hired an old Leaf who couldn't skate? They are truly dumb enough to do it again.

Honestly, if we sign beagle for a reasonable amount (2.5x2) then trade sutter. It’s a positive for me.

I think we all know that Benning and Co. don't think that way to maximize value by replacing a current asset with FA and harvesting picks in a trade. They are clearly thinking Horvat Sutter Beagle xxx or Horvat xxx Sutter Beagle.
